I'm still thoroughly convinced Naoko Takeuchi was watching these shows in the 80's and thought "Man this shit is cool". Especially since you see earlier Sailor Moon concept art where Usagi Tsukino is sporting a long flowing skirt and a pistol. Hell even the "Make UP!" thing helping the characters with their disguise (even if it doesn't really show up on the page) is probably inspired by this too. Mostly just speculation on my part BUT if these Delinquent Girl shows really DID have an influence on Sailor Moon, that would mean that the Pretty Cure franchise shares a lineage with these Sukeban as well.

In fact, you even begin to notice that Miho never actually interacts directly with Ruri and Kei in any scene until the last quarter of the series. She only ever really talks to Yumi directly. Naoko Takeuchi is a very lucky mangaka. Almost all of her successful idea came from this genre. Female students investigating; Combat with sailor suit/uniform; Unrecognizable alternate identity thanks to make up; Deus ex machina helper that only appear doing almost nothing but throwing roses. Kinda explain why she doesn't have any notable mangas before and after the sailor V and sailor moon series.

And a few ideas borrowed from Shotaro Ishinomori, such as the color-coded sentai (Super Sentai), the mask Venus wears during her solo days (Bishoujo Kamen Poitrine), the adherence to secrecy, and the more... creature factory design of many of the MOTWs.

Reminds me of our local "Career Center" back in the day. Thats where they sent you if they wanted you out, but had no reason to expel you. Its also where they sent the pregnant girls. Its also where we used to do the Survive Alive house back in the day, I think they stopped it when I was in elementary school. We went there when I was in like 1st and 2nd grade (1991-92) then never again. FYI: Survive Alive was a program where they showed school children how to escape a house fire. It was a full size house rigged with smoke machines and red flashing lights. It was kinda crazy. Im sure they wouldnt do it now for a litany of reasons.

@@Soufriere84 YOu have to remind the companies that own these shows that THEY OWN THEM...! If the companies still exist and anybody knows where the footage is. They lost the negative to the original Project A-Ko for over 30 years and just found it recently. That tends to happen a lot in Japan. They lose stuff forever or for decades because it gets catalogued and nobody bothers to look!

Once again I can tell you (and toku_gami) put a ton of work into research for this. I noticed the idol connection in my own tokusatsu research (although mostly indie stuff), and it's really interesting how they worked around the 'main girl' problem to not ruin that idol's image (or at least they think 'ruin'). Thanks for doing these deep dives!

I thought the rival to Sukeban Deka would have been about good Japanese students that do all their work on time, but it's shot like a fight scene from an anime. "I must pass this test to make my father proud! I WILL NOT FAIL!"

Not really. Japan -like any other country- use fiction to run away from their reality. In reality, studying and school is terrible, and too strict. They feel smothered. So when creating fiction, they make it the opposite of their reality for escapism purposes. The more unrealistic and wild it is, the better and more entertaining.

It's funny how the original Sukeban Deka was more or less believable, but once it spun off sequels and spin-offs the whole genre lost it's mind. I think Yuki Saito is still my favorite out of all of them since she does treat it like it's real, but I won't lie and say I didn't get enjoyment out of the whole lot. It's like acknowledging Godzilla is a metaphor for the atom bomb, but still enjoying watching him jump on King Ghidorah's face. There's a place for both.
