LMAO !!!! A long history .... from 1936. In Carolina we were smoking whole hog over hickory coals from the MID 1700's. THAT is history. Long before Texas was even thought of. Give me pulled pork, collard greens, potato salad and hush puppies, all washed down with sweet tea and banana pudding for desert.
@blownonfuel3 жыл бұрын
You need to read some history my friend. 1700? Pff, those hogs you speak of came from Spain when the conquistadors conquered Mexico. Those hogs made there way up into North America and guess where they passed through first? Tejas!!!! Tejanos were making BBQ years before Carolina even saw a hog.

Went here about 9 years ago, well actually to the Round Rock location and thought it was really good. My cousin wanted to take us to Coopers but traffic on that Easter Sunday was terrible, so he reluctantly took us to Salt Lick instead. My cousin and the locals seemed to shit on Salt Lick and call it a tourist trap and pedestrian BBQ. Well that may be the case and yes over the years I've had better, but when you grow up in NYC and then move to Los Angeles, this place is food from god himself! When you drive up the aroma is mouth watering. I've had everything the host had and thought the pork ribs and sausage were the best. The sausage goes SOOO well with that bread and the BBQ sauce. I may have to mail order me some soon. Oh and the Pecan Pie...WOW!!

Yes sir. Texas is filled with so many different kinds of food. In most areas, you're going to find good BBQ across the state, that's a given. Go a little further east, closer to Louisiana and you'll find more cajun food that's just as good as NOLA's (because people from there move to Texas and bring their recipes with them). You can go further north to a town called Muenster and get some excellent German cuisine as the town is renowned for their German heritage. And don't get me started on the plethora of Tex-Mex options, as well as plenty of authentic Mexican food options. Of course the big draw of Texas is BBQ and Tex-Mex, but it's a huge state with much to offer. 10 countries: The Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Macedonia, Luxembourg and Hungary would all fit inside Texas.

Had the pleasure of eating here a few years back. Great food and some pretty property. One issue with the video... Texans just don't know about and don't do burnt ends. It's a Kansas City treat. Where the gentleman in the video sliced is not the burnt end. But again, TX doesn't typically do them. Great place to eat. Everyone needs to go and to get a picture of that pecan fire in the dining room.

The Salt Lick is unique in terms of BBQ style for Central Texas. They use different seasoning, wood, and sauce then what you will get in most barbecue restaurants in Austin and the surrounding area. Central Texas BBQ is influenced by German and Czech immigrants and come from a way to preserve unsold meats from the meat market. Brisket will only be season with salt and pepper, smoked with only post oak, and no sauce (although now they have sauce everywhere and it's generally tomato and vinegar based). The Salt Lick is still very popular, but it's popularity predates the barbecue Renaissance started by Aaron Franklin of Franklin BBQ. If you are in Austin, go to Franklin BBQ, La Barbecue, John Mueller, or Micklethwait. If you want old school, Louie Mueller in Lockhart or Snow's in Lexington (only open Saturday morning). All of these places cook top rate Central Texas BBQ. Edit: John Mueller is closed now. Also the Salt Lick "pit" is a "lie". Their meat is cooked on Southern Pride gas ovens, and then put on the pit to finish before slicing. The pit simply doesn't have enough square footage to cook the amount of meat they would require. I'm not saying this is a bad thing. YMMV.

pedantic79 Franklin BBQ may be the best in Austin, but the lines are so damn long. Plus they sell out early. So why waste time in line, when there's so many great places for BBQ throughout Texas. The Salt Lick in Driftwood was such an awesome experience. Plus the brisket & sausage were totally awesome. We were disappointed with sides though.
@voodoochef1009 жыл бұрын
Boondock Saint I did my homework on-line and messaged several yelpers on who had the best BBQ in Dallas area (we were there for Cowboys Thanksgiving Day game). And they all said the same thing. For the Ultimate BBQ its best to drive down to Austin &/or Lockhart. The Top 3 places that were recommended were 1)Franklin's, Austin 2) Salt Lick, Driftwood 3) Black's, Lockhart. Because we despise lines & waiting (we're from NYC, LOL) We did The Salt Lick & were on our way to Black's. But unfortunately because it was on Thanks Eve, the traffic was so bad, that we decided best to drive back to Dallas for dinner.
