For every second of my life, there’s a lion running through the night. This line hit me really hard when I first began listening to this group back in the late 90’s. I was (and still am) very into the environmentalism movement. I was also beginning to try to think about the geological and evolutionary time scales. I did the math back then and I just did it again. The earliest lions, as far as what we comprehend to be a lion, have been found to exist roughly two million years ago. I’ve been on Earth for 40 years. By this math, lions have run through about 728million nights, while I’ve lived through about 1.25billion seconds so far. It’s a little off. But if you’re thinking he’s speaking to an audience that were most likely in their twenties at the time, he was spot on. And again, as someone in their late teens, it really struck a chord with me. How dare we humans, as such a young species on this planet, show such disrespect to such a magical animal as a lion by fucking up its ability to survive as a species? Partly because of this song, that’s how I’ve always viewed it - as a matter of respect for our elders. We owe a lot more than we’ve given so far.
