The lead leg side kick was my bread and butter in sparring. It is powerful, fast, it creates distance to build combinations and works great when used as a stop hit to interrupt opponents. I particularly liked the heel slap drill with the skip in there, that's a good way to build speed and adjust you distance rapidly giving the kick a lot of versatility. Solid instruction here.

Everyone seems to Forget that this is a modern Chinese martial art and that Karate and Taekwondo have a traditional Kung Fu influence, and therefore do not expect it to look like Karate or Taekwondo

Pretty solid. Try eliminating the shuffle and using what I call a power slide as well. Basically, let your supporting foot slide as you kick. It eliminates the tell of the shuffle, while adding good distance to the kick. Related to this is drilling as a counter to the jab. No time to bridge the gap, no rear foot movement at all, except turning into the kick while timing the jab. If done correctly, you catch the opponent in the ribs at his moment of almost complete extension. A slight , natural lean away from jab. Just enough to accommodate the kick. I totally understand about not turning your hip over for fear of having your back taken, Jason. However, practicing with the full hip pivot is good. It allows for the one square inch of your heel to make contact while delivering much more power in the kick. The trick is in placing your foot immediately where you want it on the floor so you can use your follow up cross. Anyway, nice vid overall!

The reason I never liked this kick in kickboxing, or that I see in match fights, is that even if you land it well, the opponent will usually ride it out much like the teep in thai boxing. Its good for street fighting if you get jumped because it creates space and time to think, but in the ring it seems to usually lead to a reset by the ref because now you have 15 feet between you and your opponent. Unless you are really fast, its easy to telegraph and If your opponent side steps you, you are looking at being taken down as you complete the kick. I like the idea of using it as a punch counter though, that's really nice. Being short I would like to use that against a taller guy. One question - are you always using it as a lead leg kick? I just noticed you are standing southpaw!

in sanda if you make the oponent fall off the plataform you score the round so a distancing kick is perfect for that. Besides you can end a fight if you land this on the ribs.

This, a kick to the gut, ribs or kidneys is even more devastating than a punch. It'd fuck people up good. And the style of this kick makes it easy to recover back to striking position if you mess up.
@Jon-ov4nc

Wireline lead leg sidekick is already on if you just turn your hip in a little, the rear leg sidekick can be hrown forward but is uncommon due to not being the fastest of kicks due to needing to turn so much before extending the leg. a sidekick in self defence/street fighting it is intended for striking out to the side, so you extend a rear leg SIDEkick to create distance against someones buddy coming at you from the SIDE.

You can use this shuffle and kick to get in safely when you're out of reach. Having said that to me the real beauty of Sanda kicks if they all start the same with the knee up in front of you so it's hard to tell what's coming. And moreover without the shuffle there, they work at arm's length. You can just be standing there someone comes at you and you can kick someone at arm's length as quick as you can punch them.

TheDroidBay I will put it as simple as possible most people aren’t good in this kick because of the lack of practice and because of the mentality that some coaches install in there students that this technique does not work, wanna be more efficient just train the kick more and apply it in sparring

Traductor de ggogle: It kicks only with the strength of the leg, does not use the projection of the hip to give real energy to the impact. Thus, the kick is more a push than a blow, it lacks penetration. It can serve an adversary, maintain a distance, but it does not hurt with the forcefulness that a kick should have.

burningknuckle26 Cool. So it's different than other well done sidekicks in what way?
@36424567254
@36424567254 9 жыл бұрын
Brad Bode The one difference i see is that this seems to be the heel variation, i.e. the "pushing" side kick. Karate and Taekwondo traditionally prefer the blade-of-the-foot strike for this, while using the heel in the back kick (obviously, it's not like people in karate or taekwondo never wondered: "but what if i hit with the heel?"). That being said, i don't think any style teaches the sloppy sidekick he attributed to (mostly) karate.
@bradbode5246
@bradbode5246 9 жыл бұрын
Andrea Castellani thanks for your thoughts. I think you'd (or maybe not) be shocked at how often the "sloppy" sidekick is thrown. I've seen a lot of people throw a sidekick on the path of a round house kick, which makes it lack power. To your point it's probably more prevalent in TKD because they tend to emphasize speed for tournament fighting and it's faster to throw it on the roundhouse path. I'm not sure anyone intends to teach it "sloppy", but more so that they just don't correct the student enough. Students always find the easiest method don't they?
@bradbode5246
@bradbode5246 9 жыл бұрын
I should add... I think TKD uses the blade of the foot primarily because of point fighting. The kick can be "flicked" outward so to speak instead of "pushed" like a piston. Also, I wouldn't want to kick something really solid with my foot bladed like TKD does. But that's another topic. Thoughts?

Interesting to watch. I did Tae Kwon Do for a good five or more years and this training is very similar to how we were taught how to do standards side kicks. Chamber up and arc the foot into what was called a "footsword". But all his instructions here are all what I learnt like banging the kick out like a straight piston but also tucking it back in for a follow up if needed. Also, the foot you stand on needs to face the opposite way for stability.

This guy is a descent fighter. At my first sanshou tournament, in high school, fought one of the guys Jason trained (Josh Bartholomew) in 1997. I lost by decision, but I do give the guy credit. He is a descent trainer. Josh fought Cung Le twice until a stalemate in sanshou . Jason and Josh were never able to secure a victory over Cung Le. Jason trained Marvin Perry. Perry one a USKBA Muay Thai title (The same one Jon Jones has won). Perry used this technique 100's of times to secure that title. Also Cung Le never fought Marvin Perry, the UFC fighters explanation was that Marvin was naturally 10's heavier than him. But the technique being shown is a descent one.

***** I think Jason has fought way more contact kickboxing matches than Joe. Joe is a Great State Champion Taekwondo man, but Jason has fought legit international pro kickboxers a good number of times. Joe has 3 fights, Jason has 30 or more, many in in the World Sanshou Championshios with 50 to 80 countries.

Ah yes, twisting the hip inwards to increase the range of the kick. Very powerful but you can't follow up with anything. If you don't know how to properly make this kick, the other one will leave you defenseless. That other kick is more of the ending of a larger combination. If you just throw it out of the blue you'll be very vulnerable.
