This exercise is severely impacted by the decades long lack of proper funding to the SANDF, as well as lack of discipline and expertise. The exercise is prepared and "staged" but does not show an ability to fight an up to date adversary using current techniques and equipment used in modern warfare. The showcase unfortunately highlights these shortcomings, thereby resulting in a disservice to the country and the free provision of intelligence to our enemies. Examples of a lack of discipline and team leadership are poor joint standard of camouflage by the infantry on foot, also with light reflective bush hats, a female soldier in the parade clutching a shopping bag and the common use of dark glasses, including by the senior spectating staff officers. There was, as usual, also an over reliance on our good special forces to provide a semblance of class to the affair. The real state of readiness of the SANDF is well known due to the lack of serviceable aircraft, suitable vehicles and ships. This was an exercise of smoke and mirrors to misinform the public. Brutal honesty is required if you want to be successful in defending the country in present times. The current SANDF is also not representative of the population.
