South African Special Forces in Mozambique | December 2021

In July 2021, South Africa deployed troops, including Special Forces, into Mozambique to help eliminate the enemy threat in the North of the country. However, the South African contingent was greatly ill-equipped and under-resourced for the mission at hand, with little to no close air support, too few transport aircraft and no supporting Infantry to reinforce the gains made by the Special Forces. These shortcomings tragically came to the forefront in December 2021 when a South African-Mozambican patrol was left stranded behind enemy lines and facing a significantly larger enemy force.

13 South African Special Forces Brigade soldiers passed away in the Central African Republic Civil War in 2013, so it's not the first time since 1989. The Recces are very capable and incredibly competent, the issue is the funding and having politicians who know nothing about military service making decisions that result in our soldiers dying. Thank you to all these great men for their service 🇿🇦 Edit: I apologize, I was mistaken about my first comment on the SF soldiers being KIA in 2013. It was actually soldiers of the 1 Parachute Battalion and thank you to everyone who brought this to my attention.

@@hictecnic A South African Special Forces sniper has the 9th longest recorded confirmed kill at 2.2 kilometers away and he was using a Denel NTW-20 which was built in the 90s here in South Africa. Even the French Foreign Legion soldiers have said on many occasions that if they were to go to war in Africa, they'd would only want the South Africans beside them. So I think the personnel is there, the dedication is there, the capability (I'm sure not to the same standard of the 70s - 90s) is there. I think the biggest let down here (like many other things in South Africa) is the government. Those nut sacks ruined and are still ruining all the great things this country had.

The fact that they're deploying SF for this type of action rather than standard infantry shows the poor state of SA's infantry battalions. The government is so incompetent and so busy stealing money wherever they can that there's no funding for the military which directly led to this soldier's death and the deaths in the Battle of Bangui debacle. Either give the SANDF the resources to operate properly in Mozambique or leave and let the Rwandans deal with it.
@jaredkruger9750

No not at all, the SF were first deployed to gather intelligence and scout of the AO. They are actually a very important asset in this type of warfare, being gorilla warfare. Our infantry battalions are more than capable, they are the only UN battalion in the world tasked with counter offensive duties, as in they are used in a conventional military manner. This is because the UN commanders are cited as having said that the South African troops are the best deployed on the MONUSCO mission in DRC. However there is no denying the lack of funding and it is that same lack of funding that meant that only two oryx’s could be deployed. There is a flip side to that though, SAAF are the only ones providing air support for the entire SADC mission which consists of a further 1500 soldiers from other countries as-well as the 1495 from South Africa.

This is a warfare southern Africa has known since the 1960's. So the SA infantry, let's say 6 SAI (if we had helicopters) with elements of 1 SAI and 1 SSB as well as the para/art and some very successful Bn's and the area can be blanketed.

@@jaredkruger9750 Yes, I agree that SF would be deployed initially for recon etc but now they're doing infantry tasks such as patrolling which is a waste of their skills. SA's most capable line infantry troops are the contingent in the DRC and the parabats. There are always going to be some troops who are dedicated and motivated but they're outnumbered by the rest who have poor readiness, just look at the lack of discipline and corruption of the companies deployed on the border not to mention 40-50 year old privates in some cases. Equipment is obsolete, the Ratels for instance are the exact same vehicles used in the 1980s with no upgrades while planes such as the C130s have very low serviceability and should've been replaced a decade ago.

You didn't listen to the video. The resources that were meant for the Special forces (like the Oryx helicopters) were being used to support the other countries in this operations that were part of this operation. @@vik4741I can assure you that SANDF did not have any air assets anywhere near the operation at the time, let alone have the capability to support anyone else. In fact, it was the PMC operation that provide casevac and re supply from their own air assets. Practically a whole section of SANDF paratroopers ( my old unit) were killed in March 2013 in the DRC, also due to zero CAS. I can assure you that the lack of air support is a common occurrence with the SANDF. Wide spread of Corruption and mismanagement of funding is the main cause of this. Love your videos and happy that South Africa gets its own episode. Wish you could have a look at subsequent special forces operations in Mozambique after the unfortunate death of Corporal Radebe too, not much is know publicly of course, but worth a look. Having watched the full video I think you could've been more in depth given what we now know. There are a few insightful comments here too. As your other videos have illustrated incomplete intelligence and inadequate logistical support isn't exclusive to African forces especially special operations ones. Doesn't excuse anything, but various SAS, DEVGRU and Delta Force missions haven't gone as planned. My guess is they view them as lessons learnt and plan better, the difficulty with the SANDF is that they're doing this on a tenth or less budget

Jeez, it's honestly sad to see just how far the South African SF units have fallen. No disrespect intended for Cpl. Radebe, but their equipment, their assets, and reportedly their training have all become sub par by international SOF standards. Not saying that that affected this operation, as a similar tragedy befell US Army SF forces in Niger a few years back, but still. Props to them for still going into foreign war zones despite these shortcomings, but I hope they can return to being the prominent SF units on the African continent. Battle of Bangui - "In March 2013, SA suffered its worst military defeat since the end of apartheid. After a battle that lasted almost two days, 200 crack troops who engaged 7,000 rebels in the Central African Republic were forced to negotiate a ceasefire at their base. Thirteen SA soldiers died in the battle, with two more later succumbing to their wounds".

The foreign accent pronouncing our local names are a bit disconcerting The ineptitude of the SA government is quite apparent here. It's not the first time that the ANC regime has failed to deploy an appropriately supported and large force.

Rhodesia was known as "The Bread Basket of Africa" before the west abandoned them. They were one of the few who resisted and bore the brunt of Soviet manipulation in the region. Iirc they were also one of the first African nations to start integrating schools. Very sad.

A lot of comments defending the SF and SADF. Thats admirable. As in many armies. The funding and leadership never matches the sacrifices. Its the legacy of bush wars back in 1970s and 80s. That made both the Rhodesian and South African armies deadly and unique. But the supporting airpower was more effective back then.

politicians will make sure all assets and support will be available to their needs ! But if fellow countrymen like soldiers put their lives on the line for others - then sorry.... assets and support are presently unavailable but good luck out there in the bush - we will see what we can do. Same kinda shit happened in Bangui ! The masters are looking after themselves and family.

If the South African special forces is under funded and supported imagine their regular army deployments. Surely SA has more transport helos than 2!?
@ginger0208
@ginger0208 Жыл бұрын
They do, and there are 4 deployed in Mozambique, I don't know where he read 2? We also have 6 helos deployed to the DRC, 4 Oryx and 2 Rooivalk. The rest are in SA as they do search and rescue, transport of VIPS, and usually partake in police ops as SAPS doesn't have enough helicopters. I think our working helicopter fleet is currently at 100+.
@livethforevermore
@livethforevermore Жыл бұрын
@callsign_ginger2794, it's been widely reported that there were only 2 South African Oryx Helicopters deployed to Cabo Delgado in December 2021. I haven't seen any sources mention there being 4, but I'll happily stand corrected if a verifiable source says otherwise. My research was based primarily off of reports by South African media outlets covering the Vikela deployment and articles written by Darren Olivier, of the African Defence Review, who said in January 2022: "They have only two Oryx transport helicopters to support 300-400 troops deployed across a huge area and, worse, have limited vehicle mobility as a result of the region’s harsh terrain. This has meant that most engagements, actions, patrols, and similar have had to be done on foot and without support from either aircraft or heavy weapons, making the troops vulnerable." The media outlet, The Daily Maverick, also said in an article published on the 11 January 2022: "The parlous condition of the state arms company, Denel, was part of the reason only two Oryx helicopters and no Rooivalk attack helicopters had been sent to Mozambique."
@ginger0208
@ginger0208 Жыл бұрын
@@livethforevermore As far as I'm aware, speaking to guys on the ground (from SASF, 1Para bn, SAAF), there more than 2 Oryx helicopters available. 2 from 22 Squadron and 2 from 23 Squadron. No rooivalk though, but it's a possibility in the future from what I've heard and as you stated in the video. However there was no air support during the Battle of Bungui back in 2013, which is something I've always wanted to see on your channel.
