SA military is only used for peace keeping UN missions, which is why its so small and weak right now.

I also spent half a dozen years after my service volunteering to assist ex-soldier with depression, attempted suicide and PTS. I got to know the Angolan war from many perspectives. I know war very well and I know soldiers. This is a promotional video, designed to to appeal to non military South Africans. Its a movie so the devil of poor soldiering is in the detail. They pass this test. Are they disciplined, do they use their weapons correctly, are they neat and tidy (in the few shot on them in West Africa). Do their officers have complete control. etc etc. These are great South African soldiers, worthy of our admiration. Anyone who challenges the state is going to get a huge wake-up call.

It appears another wannabe army expert has replied to this post but his reply has been deleted (possibly by KZbin)... That is sad because we need to see this stupidity. We need to challenge it. A GREAT soldier is not based on his skin colour. It isnt from being descended from fighters in the Anglo Boer War. It is about leadership, discipline, valour and training. If you can spot a shortcomming in one of these then please comment. Otherwise dont make a fool of yourself Also, if you challenge my comments, please explain how you got your military expertise. The old SADF didn't give many medals and not for loading stores or guarding Voortrekker Monument. More radio operators were killed in the various (stupid) conflicts than any other group because the freedom fighters understood that our communications were vital. They targeted us. I was a conscript (forced to be a soldier), I didn't want to be there. I got severe depression as a result and I found there was no psychological support. When I found many other soldiers were also suffering, I volunteered to try to help them part time. Many ex-soldiers including me were very troubled by our experiences in this extremely sad and pointless piece of our history. That is why suicide, depression and PSD is such a problem among many white South African males 55 and older.

@@SpartanMFP So 200 SNDF guys left for Mocambique 3 weeks ago. Why South African troops, why do we have 500 troops in Mocambique? Because they are the best in Africa. They are better than the French, the Blue Berrets and the AU Peace keepers. They do the job quickly without killing thousands of people, many of them civilians. The UN pays for them, not you the tax payer. They are invited. The SADF were never invited to defend another nation. All 500 of our men will come home, none dead, none wounded. They will probably be home for Xmas... Compare this with the Nationalist governments army. The SADF lost twice in Angola, they lost in South West. They lost in Soweto in 1974-76 against unarmed children!!! They lost again in the 80s. To do this, they killed thousands, many were uninvolved civilians. They also killed hundreds of our boys. After watching this video, I did some reading and found that not only United Nations and the African Union praise them. Also the Red Cross, Doctors without Boarders and many other NGOs. I have taken time to read comments, while I got angry, I am also glad that such platforms exist so that those whose minds are full of rubbish and vile can vomit it here, and hopefully they feel better afterwards. I am a Native African and and I know that views expressed here are not all White people's views, I know that some people are just paranoid and hateful. Some are nostalgic of apartheid, some are having illusions and delusions. Change is not nice more so if it comes late as it brings some pain, white South Africans would not have lived well in this country if apartheid never stopped at least in ''law''. Africans to a large extent still bear the brunt of vicious apartheid legacy that literally plunged Africans into mass poverty. While some warped minds may dearly be nostalgic of their ''heavenly'' apartheid era where everything was perfect in their eyes, reality is that ''he who wishes to live in the past does not deserve to live in the present''. I personally love this country and its people, as imperfect as it is, I know that it is going through the terrible birth pains but the ''baby'' which is an inclusive, equal opportunity, diverse country that will surely come. It may seem impossible but it will come to pass. Sadly a lot of critics are arm chair, racists, biased critics who care not about our future, but wishes the past.

For all the nay sayers in the comments section, this man has served five 12 month deployments in an incredibly hostile combat zone. The SANDF has downsized from what it was in the 1980's, it had to, previously it was an army of occupiers, forcibly oppressing the majority of the countries population. Since democracy and the merging of the old SADF, homeland and liberation forces in the nineties, the army has been successfully and continuously deployed in peacekeeping and relief operations. So yes, it is no longer the aggressively positioned force of conscripted troops sucking more than two thirds of the countries budget and incurring an international debt we are finally clearing. Somehow I prefer the present committed group of professional and experienced troops from all races and social backgrounds. The SANDF has developed skills, strategies and equipment suited to regional requirements. So please, if you just want to sound off negative about something and express your Apartheid nostalgia, do it quietly with out disrespecting these brave men and women.
@Ghoulza5 жыл бұрын
ummmm, look i know SANDF has done a lot of good, but a lot of what you say is utter crap. special forces, ie recce and para's are still top class, the rest has gone downhill and is no longer the top professional force it used to be. corruption and ill discipline has crept into the forces. this isnt just my opinion, i've studied all the opperation SANDF has been in and spoken to people who where involved. I know a lot of current soldiers. the standards of the army and especially top brass and not what they used to be, it has gone down hill alot.

Terrain determines the cover and aim positions to take and in the Congo jungle they will have plenty of cover depending if they can use it efficiently, they won't be having much options in aiming positions I would say, unless if they under attack they can go prone, though I will assume standing pos and kneeling pos in the good cover will give a well aimed shot. Some of those rebels don't aim they spray fire while their weapons are shoulder hight and a weapon butt away from the shoulder.
@eliasmbanze5 жыл бұрын
It seems some of the people making comments here are those who miss and benefited from the dear old days of apartheid. No matter how glorious they were then, the fact remains, they fought for the suppression and subjugation of black people. The South African army of that period was powerful as a result of American and Israeli support. No matter how powerful they were, they were fighting for an oppressive system that deprived people of liberties and reduced them to the level of animals. Praising the SADF of those days is like admiring ISIS or Al-Qaeda for their military prowess.
