For the reason why Death wear an Ankh is because each endless represent their opposite too (Dream/Reality, Destiny/Free will, Death/Life, etc...) so the ankh is used to symbolize life

I LOVED Gwendolyn as Lucifer - they had her literally looking like a fallen angel. The hair was cherubic and her face was soft like depictions of angels in renaissance art. I felt it was a proper nod to the Fall.

So a couple things to maybe just help elucidate or clear up sole aspects of the show that were different that you seem to have had minor issues with or maybe didn't understand. Only half way through the video at time of this comment but...... 1. Morpheus (Dream) is technically not a God, he's the same Morpheus as the Greek God, but he isn't, the Greeks simply worship him as such because they don't understand him. Dream isn't the God of dreams, he *is* dream, the concept of dreaming made manifest, and he's older than any God in DC's mythology besides THE God himself, the Presence, father of Lucifer. 2. I didn't care for Johanna either, but the reason was that HBO Max has a Constantine show in the works already and Netflix wasn't able to acquire the rights to use John. Neil Gaiman also said (I believe in a tweet) that he believed viewers would be able to attach to Constantine better if a single actor was used. Which I don't really agree with, but it's whatever. I wish they'd have gotten Matt Ryan. 3. The reason for Lucifer's gender swap is that there wasn't a gender swap, technically. Angels in DC are androgynous, having no truly discernible male or female attributes. They're vaguely humanoid and supposed to be beautiful to behold. That said, Lucifer in the OG comic was modeled after David Bowie, who was obviously male, but gender fluid. So using Gwendoline Christie I think makes sense, and I thought she killed it. 4. The Anck worn by Death (I'm sure you know) represents life. Death wears that necklace because of the irony of wearing a symbol of life when she herself is literally the concept of Death. Sorry. Probably an annoying comment. I love the Sandman comics and wanted to just clarify misunderstandings if I could. Hope you read the comics, I'd be super interested in hearing your thoughts on those, especially as a lot of Greek and Norse mythological figures appear within the pages.

Something to add. Desire is, as you supposed, meant to be androgynous. Desire is meant to physically represent anything their viewer may want, man, woman, wealth, status, etc, so what Desire appears as is essentially all of these things rolles up into one. A couple issues of the comic elaborate on this far better than I ever could, can't remember the issue title, sadly.

To add to point four - Death, as well as the other Endless, are the manifestations of their name's concepts as well as their opposites. So Death wears an ankh because there is no death without life.

To add on to your first point - Dream can pretty much appear as any mythological god of dreams depending on the beliefs of the person seeing him, which is why he appears as Kai'ckul to Nada. In Overture he even appears as a flower to other plants. Death and Destiny are both also older than Dream, as well as the Endless' parents who appeared in Overture, Night(Nyx) and Time ( i also love the comics)

The Constantine gender swap isn't as bad as make it seem they only did it because they didn't have the rights to use Constantine due to HBO Max making their own Constantine TV show so instead Neil game and use his version of Constantine that was in the comics Joanna Constantine who was his ancestor and just made her both versions of Constantine

I get it if it worsens the storyline because the writing focuses on the gender swap too much in ways the original didn’t (like telling us over and over the character is better for being female). I also get it if a character’s gender was deeply intwined with the story (like a son dealing with childhood trauma of acting too feminine or not man enough for his peers or father or something). Other than that I don’t care. No adaptation is going to be one to one and this one comes from DC comics where things change all the time with multiple universes and entire continuity changes from crisis events. Whole characters have been written differently or from male to female or had their entire background/histories massively changed before.

Curiosity: The endless are all children of Time and Night. This only appears on Sandman Overture, which is a story that happens before the story begins, as far as I know, and we also get an explanation on why such a powerful being as Dream was captured so easily, though they retconned this aspect on the show. So yeah, I guess you can say Nyx is their mother

*Neil Gaiman* won a goddamn *Booker Prize* for a comic book! (Before they changed the rules) Many of the Deity-level characters (& some of the Endless themselves) are outside, or beyond single gender forms. So they just switch between whatever gender aspects they feel like. Desire just appears like whatever you feel attracted to. That we even perceive them as Human Personifications is demonstrated to be an illusion, when J'onn J'onnz meets Morpheus & sees him as the Martian God of Sleep, a scintillating cloud with lots of eyes in it. #IWantMyGothGirlDeath

The actual reason given by Neil is that the average member of the audience isn’t going to run know who John Constantine is and so it is more narratively useful to be able to use the same actress both in the modern day and for historical Joanna Constantine so that you don’t need to expose it around the relationship.

As I understand it, what happened was that, when the series started production, Constantine's television rights were tied up with The CW (They don't own it, but they did have a contract to use the character). That's why Netflix couldn't use John. But now that The CW has canceled its series with John Constantine... Maybe that's not the case anymore.

funny enough, Death wears an ankh in the show/comics to give further support to her brother's (Destruction's) Theory that they are lords of opposites. (Ex. Dreams and nightmares, Destiny and delirium, Desire and despair, LIFE and DEATH) Death also came into existence when the first being was BORN, which has led many to speculate that she represents rebirth as well. I read he changed certain races to be more inclusive but the Constantine change is because Netflix couldn't get the rights to the DC version

I know others mentioned this, but the Johanna Constantine thing was a DC rights thing. They didn’t do anything where they’d be conflicting with other current DC properties. Same reason they tweaked John Dee’s story. FWIW, it worked for me, and they did keep John’s basic story from the comics. Loved the actress who played Death. Honestly, this was about as faithful adaptation as we’ve seen recently. And I say this as a huge fan of the source material. Also, the Ankh… Death wears it in the comic as well. And yes, it’s the Egyptian symbol… of Life. So it’s kinda interesting and sorta fitting that she wears it. Especially considering she points out she meets each being at least twice… when they enter this world and when they leave it.

For sandman in persona 5 or shin megami tensei the description of him saying that He is a figure that is rumored to put people to sleep by sprinkling magical sand onto the eyes of children while they sleep at night. The rheum in one's eyes upon waking is believed to be the result of the Sandman's work the previous evening. For bad children who still wouldn't sleep, he would scoop their eyes out.

As a bisexual PoC... 10,000% yes to "treat them like a human being" sexuality is not a core character trait, it's just a small part of a character. Ethnicity is a bigger one but still not the core of a person's personality or identity [unless they don't have anything else to rely on and... I'm gonna be honest most of the people who lean into a single personality aspect as a whole personality have annoyed the fuck out of me when I met them in reality], down at the center of a person is just... the things that make up that person, shaped by experiences, preferences, opinions, and the influences of the subconscious. Focusing too hard on *any* singular aspect of a person takes them from being a character into being a caricature.

True. Personally I have a major problem with much society focuses on single traits as if they define the entire character. I see this from both sides where all they see is Black or gay. Its especially painful when human races are a fabricated social construct and homosexuality has been around for centuries that we know of (realistically probably since humanity has been). The other problem is both of those traits are surface level. The affect at large how other people treat you in your first meetings or how strangers and societal systems treat you, and that’s it. None of them define who you are and really the only part they are of your story is shaping a bit of your history and life choices (for example, lets say someone was a slave on a plantation, well Black is still just there physical appearance and while it led to them being a slave, that’s all it did, what matters to that person is that they are a slave and that will then affect their life far greater than anything else and having brown/darker skin didn’t cause that, other people did which was their choice based on a physical perception of the first person; the skin color doesn’t actually matter, people’s perception and society’s treatment does). Being homosexual isn’t anyone’s entire being, but it does shape who they get involved with romantically, how others treat/see them, etc. All of which is determined by a variety of other variables and is different for every person and is more importantly important not because of a surface level personality trait, but because it defines the actions, lessons, situations, environment, and etc we go through in life that shape who we are. Honestly, its rather disgusting how shortsighted people have gotten (or maybe always were) in that regard. The other problem (that I care more about from a story perspective) is that this is becoming a smokescreen for the complete lack of actually non-surface level diversity we’re seeing in more mainstream media. A lot of characters and storylines are becoming formulaic and generic in nature. Disney is especially getting bad at this where they keep giving the same story and character, but throw someone of color or in the LGBT+ community up to distract from it. What’s even worse is how token those characters still are. The Star Wars sequel trilogy was especially bad with the actors of Finn and Rose coming out with their dislike of how their characters were written and the way Hollywood puts minority characters on a pedestal only to distract from not giving a crap about them still and seemingly refusing too. So many minority characters you can tell are just there for twitter likes when a big company with old white men in charge is involved. And then they’re happy to drop them to cater to China (not to the people, but government). Its awful

Cain and Abel living in the dreaming actually has some nifty DC comics lore behind it. See, back in the day they hosted their own comic series: Cain had the House of Mysteries while Abel had the House of Secrets. They both had this sort of gimmick where Cain and Abel would tell the reader horror stories as if they were guests staying at the house. Later, after the series had been canceled, they popped up in Saga of the Swampthing during the same story arch that introduced Constantine. Essentially the pair showed up in a dream Abby Arcane was having, and Abel told her the original Swampthing story (which appeared in House of Secrets as a one off). At the end of the dream Cain murders Abel for sharing a secret, and Abby wakes only to forget the story (for now). We see Cain and Abel in the Dream realm once or twice more in that whole story arch in small commentary cameos. Well when Gaiman wrote Sandman, he wrote a ton of references to these old horror comics into them. Cain and Abel live in the Dreaming in their respective houses, Lucienne of the Ghost Library series is a servant of Dream, the 3 witches from Witching Hour pop up as the fates, and so on. Even Destiny started off as a horror host before being bumped up to Endless status. :D in short if a character hosted an anthology series at DC, odds are they live in or are related to the Dreaming.

there is a reason for the swap not a good one but it is one: they had issues with the rights. So to avoid some issues, they tried to hide details like the name of the asylum where john dee was put in by dream (arkham). For john constanine, they swaped the gender. for me its just another dc paralell universe in wich john is a woman and lucifer is too

I have heard 2 reasons why the chenged the genders of Constantine and Lucifer 1 was from a random person at a book store who overheard a conversation I was having with one of their coworkers. They stated that show was trying to distance itself from the WB shows so as not to think it shared the arrow universe. And DC comics wanted that as well. That is also why the Martian Manhunters was removed. Luckier was the same reasoning. Not to tie in with the popular show of the same name. 2nd was from the KZbin reviewer Midnight's Edge who put forward the cynical view that since JJ Abrams is working on his own Constantine project and wants all of the revenue from that, he would allow Netflix to use the name and cut into any potential profit Abrams company would make. So with John off the table the show runners just went

To comment on the chosen one situation/ story arc. Techincally, shes not the chosen one. I do agree a chosen one storyline wouldve made me bored outta my mind, but rose wasnt even "chosen", nor was she supposed to have the connection to the dreaming in the first place. Spoilers ahead It was her grandma that was supposed to be the vortex at the time period and i think, desire was only choosing humans by absolute random and at semi random intervals give or take within the timeframe of the few thousand years, which is why dream wouldve had so very little information about vortexes themselves since they come from an entirely different cosmic manifestation and not from the dreaming or dream itself. Desire has been toying with dream for quite a while and very carefully to have stayed so invisible so far. Althought i agree with everything so far

I believe they didn´t change Lucifer´s gender, they just put Gwendoline playing a "male" lucifer because he is androgynous in the sandman comics, he only appears as a male in his own series, and honestly Gwendoline kinda looks like the Lucifer of the comics

Neil gaimon actually answered this in an interview. In the comic lucifer was genderless only referring to themselves with the royal we.. Neil gaimwn said "lucifer is a genderless being so simply by casting a human actor is a gender swap" paraphrased So basical the show just let anyone regardless of gender for the role and Gwendolyn got the part

The trial by combat thing: first, I have to be honest and say I haven't read this particular story in a long while, but it was pretty much explained in the show that the Endless and all other beings are governed by laws. One of these laws is that if you want to take something from a demon, you have to fight them for it. And if someone chooses you as a champion, you can't refuse. That's why Morpheus can't back out when Lucifer was nominated nor can Lucifer back out what she was nominated. But yes, she also did want to fight Morpheus

Read the whole series ages ago, so I wasn't really bothered by anything altered or new because that was pretty much the point of many of the stories. I liked the Constantine presented here because she gave off _Hellblazer_ vibes to me which means she seemed more like old-school Constantine before that character became popular and lost some of his sizzle in place of one-liners and popping up everywhere. But yeah, it's interesting to hear someone like yourself talk about it. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts if you decide to read the series, a lot of your questions, complaints, and the like may not change but at least they'd be more informed. It's just weird hearing people complain about diversity& gender swapping, to a series that pretty much broke all those roles 3 decades ago. BUt hey, I'm sure if they replaced Wonder Woman with Kratos for copyright reasons, I'd be pretty peeved too. 😜😜

Just a quick nitpick, the connection between golden age Sandman, Sandy the Wonderboy (later Sand) and dream of the endless is incredibly tenuous because of a much later short story set during Morpheous’ imprisonment. Really they just share a name and there was never intended to be a connection

Following seasons will be just like the comic volumes. Audio books were fantastic. Joanna was a creation of Gaimen so they could use the name. John is not available. Desire is androgenous, not one gender or the other. Episode 6 with death is actually Gaimen favorite. He mentioned it to a group of us at a reading he did in LA. In the comics Dream faces the demon not Lucifer. It actually connects to a future storyline.

I love both in a way that's mutually exclusive. The show expanded on things in a way that translated between mediums really well. Part of me hopes we get a new morpheus each season as a nod to how often the comics drawing style changes him.

I actually don’t think Lucifer is gender swapped, because Dream and the other characters always refer to him as a “him”. At least in the Italian version, they’re all like “Lucifer, il signore dell’inferno, l’Astro del mattino”, which are all masculine forms

Lucifer hasn't a gender, but I really would have preferred someone who looked more like his appearance in the comics. Joana Constantine was a bitter desicion for me, above all because I would have loved a Hellblazer series loyal to the original sourcematerial. Also some people I talked about the series thought that Joana Constantine and Joana Constantine were the same person and speculated if she is immortal or a timetraveller. So this change is especially for newcomers confusing. Lucien in my opinion was awesome and the actress translated the personality of the character perfect. Can't complain here. Great castdesicion ^^

I don't comment normally because, well I dont know, but you brought a new light to that diner episode. It felt right and wrong all at the same time for me. Some things made sense some where extreme. As for the casting I like what I saw. Hearing the Constantine switch does bother me, they really didn't do much with that character. I hope there is an explanation. But I loved Lucifer.. she did an amazing job and I wanted to see more of her. Also I have not read the comics. I have read many others just not these. There is nothing wrong with their choices. I would love to know what I'm missing. But I also feel the opinions of someone who knows quite a bit about the source material, but not the source modern material still has something to say. Not to take away or even promote from what you say but just to be a part of the conversation. (Also to be completely clear I think that you are on the more positive side of the show and I agree with you)

The constantine swtch is partially because at the time HBO was making a John Constantine series and instead of clashing with that Gaimon chose to change characters

I saw the first episode. Was bummed they toned down the son’s punishment when Morpheus was freed. It was a lot darker and more creative in the comic. I definitely don’t need to see the episode based on 24 Hours-that stuff was hard enough to read, let alone watch. Hoping they aren’t cancelled before the Midsummer Night’s Dream issue!

On the subject of Joanna Constantine, Neil Gayman has actually provided his reasoning and it runs thusly (minor spoiler). Joanna Constantine is a character from Sandman, she is one of John Constantine‘s ancestors. The average member of the public is not going to know who John Constantine is and so more is gained by using the same actress for both members of the family that is lost by a reference most people won’t get.

So in regards to the john Johanna change and not using tom Ellis as Lucifer, gaiman has said that for Johanna it was important to him to have the same actor for john and his/her ancestor so that the viewer understands they're related. The reason for not using matt ryan and tom Ellis is that their portrayals of their respective characters were too different from their portrayal in sandman and decided to distance the show so people didnt go in expecting it to be a continuation of Lucifer and Constantine

It was plainly speaking impossible to get John Constantine licensed, simple as that (has been confirmed), so it was Johanna Constantine or Nuh-uh Constantine. Also, This way they reduce 2 characters from the comics (Johanna Constantine & John Constantine) into 1 character in the series - less charcacters to introduce = more time to develop them.

To be fair I think the ankh on death is from the comics. In most pictures I see of her she has an ankh on.
