I'm pretty sure Kingo is a reference to the Babylonian god, Kingu (at least the name, not much about his character) Edit: Makkari is supposed to sound like "Mercury". Makkari was actually a male character in the comics. Edit 2: I'm pretty sure Makkari was made deaf so the sonic booms she constantly makes wouldn't affect her.

@@TheMythologyGuy1 at least I'm glad the movie is making people care a little about the old hag known as Mesopotamia mythology (for the wrong reasons but I'll take my wins) Still very salty on the representation of both deeming the Mesopotamia mythology as not real and the fact that both in comic and movie the race representation is so wrong. The dude is great, don't get me wrong but he could have been anyone else (also fact they had Gilgamesh out of all the Mesopotamians go through what he did. In the comic it takes muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch longer than that and many panels to do that but marvel just wanted to check off the diversity and 'inclusion' box. God I'm still pissed off on Gilgamesh and kingu. Eternals reminded me why I stopped caring and giving marvel my money. And still if they continue that route. It's awesome story wise and brilliantly written if you are not a fan of Mesopotamia mythology. And if you are a fan of Egyptian mythology omg you are in for a treat! The design themselves are just mwah chef's kiss. And the storytelling when the Egyptians come in will have Egyptian mythology fans excuse the gender usage fangirling over them becuase it is worth the hype. Only wish Mesopotamia got the same treatment but eih, the oldest recorded civilization never really got much love. Yes this mythology fan is very salty I won't deny that part. But if they continue I will tell you be hyped since you like Greco-Roman you will have a lot of fun. (Minor spoiler ahead I don't drop any big names or anything plot wise but I do drop which saga it seems they are heading for) My only advice for Mesopotamia lover not to watch it becuase the rage will keep building up and just... Yeah... You thought you got angry now with Kingo Sumen, it doesn't get better. Also from what you are saying they are going the Deviant Saga route which means yeah... I won't spoil it becuase you don't like to be spoilt but for non Mesopotamia lovers be hyped it is AWESOME. Not to the mention the references definitely worth the hype. Mesopotamia lovers get ready to rage quit if that is the route they are taking and Norse lovers oh my God you get what you wished for for a very long time. Also if that seems to be the case then we are in 1979 version of Earth 616 and yeah. Again sorry I'm shitting over it becuase I really was sad with the way they handled Kingo and Gilgamesh. I know this is an essay. Sorry again and looking forward to more of your content sir.

09:30 so here's the thing, they changed a lot of stuff with the eternals: in the comics they're an actual race and everyone of them posses flight (or at least levitation), superstrenght/speed/agility/durability, and they can also shoot laserbeams from their eyes, and can manipulate matter (that basically gives them instant regeneration and also makes them virtually immortal, since they can just return their bodies to their original state when injured), additionaly most of them posses unique abilities PS: by the way in the comics Thanos is actually an eternal with deviant syndrome

As a deaf person, it made me really happy to see a deaf character, especially in a big movie like this. "A person is a person." It's sad that we live in a world where people have to say that non-ironically or not joking (if either of those even make any sense). It sounds obvious, but nowadays people would prefer to believe that people are hive minds with their race, sexuality, gender, etc. People are individuals. I'm respecting you more and more, my friend!

The celestials didn't create any deaf eternal.... She became deaf from time to time because of the sonic booms which she had been undergoing since thousands of years....

That´s a massive design flaw on the celestial creators´ part. Like giving someone fire powers without making them fireproof. I wish they had time to lean into this, Sprite brought it up briefly when she questioned why she was created as an eternal peter pan.

Recently been reading the Magnus Chase series which also happens to have a main character in it who’s deaf. And it actually provides a lot of unique skills the others don’t have and it gives reason as to why Makkari is deaf. By having to use sign-language they’re forced into thinking what they’re going to say before they speak, preventing many possible arguments and ironically making others listen to them intently. There’s also the natural protection against hypothetical sirens, which I’m not sure if any deviants have the ability of, but it gives her an edge in fights the others may not have. As they say, there is strength in diversity.

Well, if it helps you learn a couple of things you may find interesting (As well as answering some of the thigs that may got you a bit confused lore wise in the comics); The Celestials are some of the most powerful and oldest beings in existence. Like so much, that even cosmic entities and sky fathers (heads of their respective pantheon like Odin, whom can alter reality, bring back the dead, and pull souls from doomed timelines and bring them to him) sees them as if they were gods. It’s been stated that the multiverse has existed and being destroyed multiple times already and they come from the very first iteration of it. After it’s original destruction, it’s second rebirth gave birth to the multiverse as we know it with the beginning of the Second Cosmos. Fun fact, Galactus was once a human from the Sixth Cosmos but he somehow survived and when the Seventh Cosmos came to be (the one that the Marvel Universe was mostly about) he came as the devour of worlds. As of now, Marvel is currently the Eight Cosmos, after an event back in 2015 destroyed that multiverse and then was later rebuilded. The Celestials actually travel from world to world to experiment on lesser beings and judge them later down the line if the effort was worth it or if they should start from scraps. One of the worlds that they visited was Earth and they experimented on the predecessors of Homo Zapien. From that experiment came three races: The Eternals, godlike immortal beings that can manipulate the energy of the universe to perform incredible feats thought to be impossible. The Deviants, creatures that for the most part are molecularly unstable, are able to shapeshift to a degree and technically speaking, each Deviant is so unique that it may as well be considered it’s own species. Humanity as we know it, capable of both creation and destruction. The experiments are also partially responsible for mankind’s potential. From the X-Gene that birthed the mutants, to even explaining why radiation gave Hulk and Spider-Man powers instead of cancer… well sorta. There’s a lot going there, but that’s not here nor there. Eros and Thanos are indeed both Eternals as well as brothers. They were born on Titan, one of the moons of Jupiter where another group of Eternals live. Thanos, like the other Eternals, gets his name derives from another myth/god. Inn his case, Thanatos, which is why he’s so obsessed with death (unlike the movie). The main city of Eternals on Earth is named Olimpia and yes, it’s meant to be a parallel of sorts to Olympus and the leader of the group is an Eternals name Zuras and yes, he’s meant to be their version of Zeus… only not as much of a pervert. Ajack is more of a priest to the Eternals actually. He /She (Ajak was for the most part a male character in the comics till recently) and was the only one that could actually communicate with the Celestials in their tongue to a degree (which is impressive because if anyone tried to even understand the basics of it, they would probably go insane) and oftened hanged out in Mayan cities… I think. They actually made a jab at the names in the comics when some humans got the two mixed up and annoyed Sprite. As for the Eternals themselves they don’t inspire the myths per say. Sometimes the humans just confuse them for other myth characters, sometimes they just get their names wrong and sometimes they do inspirer the myth. Examples could be Gilgamesh and Ikaris. Gilgamesh (and by extension the rest of the Eternals) has had many different names over the centuries, but it is implied that he may as well be the true Gilgamesh of legend, seeing as he has mentioned meeting and befriending Enkidu. He’s about in a similar category of strength to Thor, Hulk and Hercules, was once an Avenger and has stated that he cares more about humans that he does his fellow Eternals, whom mostly referred to him as the Forgotten One. Ikaris on the other hand didn’t inspire the myth of Icarus, as he was actually Icarus’ father in the Marvel universe. Many centuries ago, he married a woman in ancient Greece and had a kid he named Icarus. Icarus loved to see his father fly and so he in turn asked Phastos (the Hephaestus stand-in) to make his kid a pair of wings. He did and then promised the kid that one day he would teach him how to fly. However, one day when he had to fight the Deviants, he took longer than expected, to the point that a couple of years had passed. Icarus thought that the Deviants had captured his father, so in an attempt to save him, he put on the wings that were given to him and went on to look for him. Unfortunately, he was far too excited to be able to fly and because he didn’t exactly knew what he was doing he ended up flying straight up and then passed out when he got pass the atmosphere or something. Then he came down and died when he crashed back to Earth. His father would later find him and after grieving the lost of his son and burying him, he took the name Ikaris in an attempt to honor him. At one point the Deviants actually had control over the Earth, having conquered most of the world and having humans as slaves. When the Eternals returned for the first time to see how things where going, the Deviants attacked them and as punishment, they caused the great flood. Which drove back the Deviants, sunk the city of Atlantis and would have also caused the end of humanity if not for the Eternals interfering. Ikaris in particular, was the one to guide the Ark to safety when the flood occurred. The idea of a Celestial being born from inside the Earth is actually a concept taken from the Earth X series, which is an else world story about how a future of the Marvel Universe and some even comparing it to DC’s Kingdom come. As far as the other gods, they do exist and even have meetings with one another. One of the stories that is all about them is the story Chaos War, where the god Mikaboshi almost destroyed all of existence and every mortal was put to sleep. So the only ones capable of stopping the destruction of all where the gods, demons and other beings that didn’t classify as mortals; like Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, Galactus, etc… There are even gods from other worlds like the ones from the Skrull, the Phoenix force technically seeing as a godlike being by other species as the embodiment of all life (past, present and future), Thor and company have even fought gods from other worlds and saving their inhabitants from them. As far as other gods from Earth’s myths, there’s Anisi, the Greek and Norse Pantheons, Seth whom in this universe is a dark snake god of sorts (wonder why they didn’t just made him Apophis actually), Khonshu, Gaea, being an elder goddess whom all the other gods respect (as well as the only one of the elder gods that isn’t evil), Hummingbird, a girl that hangs out with Spider-Man’s clone/brother Kaine Parker, who is the reincarnation of the blue Tezcatlipoca Huitzilopochtli, Chiyou of China, Perun (being part of Russia’s answer to the Avengers and being a parallel of Thor), Chernobog, etc… As well as other gods that are more Marvel than anything else. Like Bast for example, who is the Panther god of Wakanda and I think has family ties to one of Egypt’s gods, Knull the dark god of the abyss who created the symbiote race and waged a war against creation itself, the Vishanti, the Faltine (Dormamu is one of them), Nightmare, etc… There’s a lot more going on, but that should cover the basics of it.

I don’t think they explicitly say this in the movie but I feel like Makkari is deaf for her vibrational sense. I know they mention that she is able to feel vibrations on the air with her body which allows her to sense movement and understand people speak. My guess the celestial put her there to experiment with forms of senses or perhaps to help humanity develop sign language idk.

Well considering a "deaf" eternal might be for a very clever purpose. I know this is a year old, but I just found this channel. A deaf eternal, in my opinion is a very good strategic idea, on paper. It is known that when you loose one of your senses the other ones are heightened to make up for this loss, now on paper this is a great idea, in practice? Who knows, maybe it wasn't as successful as intended so there are no more eternals with lost senses, I think it's a brilliant idea of them trying to make the best possible 'heroes' possible through experimentation and multiple different strengths and weaknesses to compliment eachother.

Not only was I laughing when Icarus flew into the sun, but I also was thinking about the existence of the Greek gods in the MCU. The gods and goddesses in mythology don't take kindly to others comparing themselves or others to the gods or, in better known cases, people being worshiped or forcing people to worship them. Some examples would be Psyche, Niobe, Bellerophon, and King Salmoneus. Especially the later two. Each of them was punished by the gods they offended (although Psyche's story ends on a happier note). If the Eternals were posing as these gods, then why weren't THEY punished like the aforementioned mythology characters? That's what kinda boggles my mind.

With Sprite I very much saw a Puck/Robin Goodfellow type character also she reminds me of Peter Pan for some reason. So yeah sprite makes a lot of sense. With the gods vs eternals inspiring them we already have the Asgardian Gods as another race. In Marvel most of the non current religions have their Gods as being aliens and this is just another case of that. How that all works in the comics even I don't know.

I think the secret to understanding why most people (including me) disliked this movie is understanding just how many times you said "that didn't go anywhere" on pretty significant story points.

I asked that question too, Thena inspired Athena, but Zeus is in the next Thor movie, so it gets confusing when they're from the same mythology. I think Zeus is a character from a different universe since Athena(not Thena) is a real character in marvel comics. Plus they introduced the multiverse in Spiderman and the next Dr. Strange

Actually the Olimpian gods do exist in the Marvel Universe and are very different from the Eternals all together. The leader of the race stationed on Earth is actually named Zuras and he's meant to be like the Zeus of the group. They actually did made a joke about it in a comic where Sprite pulls a prank on a couple of humans, one of the Eternals apologizes on his behalf (because Sprite was a boy in the comics before) tells them that he's from the city of Olimpia (the main city of the Eternals) and when the humans confuse it by Olympus, Sprite gets annoyed. A lot of Eternals have had different identities over the years. Usually misspellings of their actual name, being confused for other folklore beings or sometimes being the inspiration for said folklore beings. The best example is Gilgamesh. He's actually had many names over the centuries, was the actual Gilgamesh from myth, but the Eternals themselves actually refer to him as the Forgotten One

The reason Makkari is deaf is because of representation, because appearently Kevin Feige thought a black man wasn't enough so they just HAD to turn him into a deaf black woman. There are three reasons people are shitting on the Eternals: 1. No one cares about the Eternals, not even comic book fans. They never show up in any big events even when they realisticaly should because the writers either forgot they exist or they know no one cares about them, they are not interesting at all and really the Eternals are just a poor man's X-Men just like the Inhumans. The only good thing about the Eternals are Gilgamesh, Thanos and Sersi. 2. The Eternals make absolutely no sense in the Marvel landscape, if you want to read about magical wacky adventures you can just read Doctor Strange or any of the other magical superheroes, if you want to read about space adventures with aliens just read Guardians of The Galaxy, if you want to read about epic cosmic odysseys and encounters with gods across the cosmos just read Thor. The Eternals serve absolutely no purpose. 3. This movie only exists for tokenisim and the Eternals are only the characters from the comics in name, they Makkari into a black man to a deaf black women, Gilgamesh from a tanned guy into an Asian, Sprite from a man into a women, and I can't remember the other characters they genderswapped. Kevin Feige does not care to faithfuly adapt these characters created by Jack Kirby because Marvel only want those woke points and because they know that even if the movie were to suck it would still make millions like pretty the rest of their movies. Just look at how much money Captain Marvel made them despite Captain Marvel being even worse than she is in the comics and also being the worst MCU movie yet.

Kevin Fiege isn’t in charge of casting these movies. That’s delegated so far down the line that he might as well not exist. And there’s no proof that they made these specific changes, it looks more like they just cast race blind and picked the best actors for each. Also the most likely explanation for Makkari being deaf because a deaf actress gave the best audition. That’s all that it needs to be.

I don't think the movie is as bad as people say, but they just tried to do too much in a single sitting. This resulted in a lot of new ideas, which can be good, but when they are all thrown it to this one movie it just feels like a bunch of sound with most of them ending up not be fleshed out much at all, which then lead to the other problem with the movie length getting pushed out with all the extra stuff that really didn't do much for the actual plot so it feels feels like im being stuck in the movie instead of enjoying the extra content.

Thena technically, Athena is another character all together. And the reason probably has to do with the fact that Sersi is one of the most popular and fan favorite of the Eternals. To the point that she was the main love interest of Dane Whitman a.k.a the Black Knight (which as we see, was a nice way to introduce him in the movies) and was a staple of the Avengers for quite a while actually.

Well, many, many mythologies have incredibly similar stories and characters and ideas (but I assume you already know that), and it does seem like all pantheons were inspired by a proto religion, especially considering how many mythologies have a flood myth, and they're quite similar. There's actually evidence of that flood from right around the time that Plato said Atlantis sunk. There's no evidence for an Ark or any boat or a coffin or whatever else, just the flood itself. I'm writing fiction about connected mythology and it's definitely way deeper than this movie, which makes me feel a little better about continuing on with what I want to write.

But are the Thor movies accurate to the Thor comic books? Because the comics were never mythologically accurate. Loki is not Odin's adopted son, he's his brother in a friend sense. But then, in a Norse mythology audio book, it said "Loki looked at his father." Is that because Odin is the All-Father? It was the story where Odin searches for wisdom and he *dies on a tree and stays there for 9 days during which he's stabbed in the side with a spear*. Sound familiar?

Well I know that Thor and Loki are brothers in the comics (not in mythology). I believe the Thor movies are mostly like the comics but the comics are barely like the myths
@luisalejandrolopezbuendia9686

@@TheMythologyGuy1 there's actually a reason behind that. The comics use the cycle of Ragnarok to explain why the Thor of mythology and their Thor are so different. The reason is that the cycle has been going for a while now, with each rebirth and destruction being different from the last one. The Thor of the myths as well as everyone else (gods, monsters, giants and all) come from the previous cycle of Ragnarok, which was more myth accurate. Across all the cycles, Odín has done what he could to break the cycle and set the gods free from it. Which is why the current Thor comes from. He wanted to give birth to the greatest warrior in all the nine realms in an attempt to stop the cycle of Ragnarok, which is why the story with him is so different. From casting him out of Asgard and placing him in the body of a frail mortal, to his more noble and heroic self here than in the previous cycle, to him being the one meant to be the future All-Father after Odin instead of Balder. Actually, one of Odin's most powerful weapons was made from the previous Mjölnir. The story goes that Magi and his brother threw Mjölnir (the old one) to Midgard, somewhere along the lines it and the area of impact turned to gold, Odin made a couple of rings out of it and then a sword out of the rings. And said sword is so powerful, that even unsheathing it would cause the end of all

This is me spit-balling here, it could be that comic book fans hate it because of inaccuracies. Maybe the Mekkari chick isn't actually deaf in the comics or some other stuff. Maybe the characters were white and are being senselessly diversified. Again, I know nothing about the Eternals comics, so I might be wrong, this is just a assumption.

A gay character being based on Hephestus is a little odd considering he's married to Aprodite in Greek mythology. But she cheats on him with Ares. That may be more Percy Jackson than actual Greek mythology. Edit: But the key phrase is "based on."
