One of the things about Gaiman is that he likes to wander to strange fields. This one may not do as much to move the narrative forward (although there's a TON of foreshadowing if you're paying attention), but it's densely rich thematically and in commentary about the nature of storytelling. Look at how many nested stories are in the Mortician's tale, or the use of obscure comics characters like Prez Rickard, or even the confusion over whether "Jim's" story is a girl's story or a boy's story. The Sandman is in large part a story about the nature of storytelling, and this is one of the major moments for that.

@@dannymalt Good Idea. Even though I'm only watching the video and not making them it's still nice to wind down with stories that are smaller. I remember binging your Invincible videos when they were still up and having to take a break afterwards. It's a shame they took those down because comics explained is doing them which is kinda bullshit because his channel is way bigger than yours and they let him keep his up. They're not even half as good as yours either. Not dogging him though he does a good job and seems like a good guy is just messed up they did you like that. Love the channel though. Keep doing you God bless buddy.

I am a little depressed that these will be the best, most complete readthroughs of The Sandman on the internet. Good structure, no doubt you'll see it through, just wish you phoned in a fan to do the commentary or something.
@riceniceman548
@riceniceman548 3 жыл бұрын
You got a lot of material to glaze through so I can't blame you for missing some odd line about a frog mug, or anything that has to be shaved off to make the video fit, there've been entire videos as long as yours about singular chapters of The Sandman, so I think you do a decent enough job in the retelling, you do sound surprised or something reading this but, maybe that's your brand. I defiantly think though, a little bit more time letting the stories marinate inside would be helpful, just so you can come out of it with some critical reflections on the work, especially since you have that sort of warmup at the beginning and thoughts section at the end. Fill it up some, get some depth, If you didn't like something I wanna hear why, and also other things surrounding the topic, seriously, this is like Jodorowsky being treated like a green pepper on a pizza.

Can’t win, some think I like this volume too much, some think I don’t like it enough. Everyone has different thoughts on it. I am a Sandman fan tho, you don’t spend as much time working on these videos as I do and not appreciate the work. This volume just happens to be my least favorite of the main Sandman Volumes.
@dannymalt
@dannymalt 3 жыл бұрын
@@riceniceman548 I hear you. You want more in-depth analysis. Will try to keep that in mind. This is definitely a series where one can spend endless time analyzing and talking about the hidden meaning of things.

@@dannymalt you should join some discord groups or find some people who've read it online to give you input on your takes and impressions so you could be learning some new things from other sources. That way it isn't only your face value interpretations but could be what you later found out or started to consider after talking with someone about this or that for example.

@@riceniceman548 This is in no way to be combative, but I would say he does a good job of breaking it down when he thinks he needs to. But because of the way he constricts his videos you don't really need him to go into an in depth analysis because most people who watch this channel are intelligent enough to get where Neil Gaimen was coming most of the time. And that was not me saying you're not. I just gotta disagree on this one with you. I don't know of another comic book KZbinr that dives deeper honestly if you know of one please tell me who it is cause I need to see that. Imaginary Axis doesn't count cause he didn't do complete stories or anything like that. No disrespect though bro. God bless.

You missed the whole point of the man in the city. It wasnt just that citys have a soul ( as if you have traveled you know. Chicago is not nyc rome is not paris, esch city has its own soul, its own personality.) What he was saying is that citys sleep And u missed the power of his statement. He found himself in the dreams of the city( thats y it was the same city, but it wasnt.)) The mad man had been stuck in the citys dream for many years, until he saw that 1 familar walk way or that 1 familar door. When he could get back out of the citys dream. When the woman asked him where it was they were. It showed that many ppl wind up in the citys dream. And knew if he missed his way out, could be stuck there for months years forever. Then when asked if he feared the city, his response was "if the city dreams then the city sleeps. Whats to fear of a sleeping city. What i fear, is that one day the city will wake." From that point on i try and avoid citys and walk less easily while in them ( this is going on what i remember of 30+ years ago so i doubt my quotes are correct. ) But the story plays on the theme of sleep, dreams, and the sandman. It shows a much larger realm that morphious rules over. As well is suppose to get the reader to think about what if we all live in sleeping cities. And what should we do "if the cities should wake. I found all the Storys far more intresting when reading the books( then hearing your monotone resentment of storys you clearly didnt enjoy.( or fully understand) I only kept listening so i could remember the stories myself. The prez story u dint do justice either. Its not just about prez or his reality. Its to show us even our 1 life and afterlife could be but 1 of million realities. Try not to receite and(or) interpret stories you dont like or fully understand. A poor job is still better then no job i guess. Neil gamin was/is a wonderful teller of tales. Most his works in the sandman were spectacular stories i read 30-33 years ago. But can still play back like a movie ( after a little refresh)but if i had never read them ( after hearing your intripitation) i probably never would and that would be a tragedy.
