The Yellow River is China's second biggest river. It is seen as the birthplace of China's civilization and is a source of much of its prosperity.
Yet at the same time, the Yellow River has brought great tragedy to the Chinese people. Thus the nickname: "China's Sorrow". Major floods throughout the years - natural or otherwise - have killed hundreds of thousands.
For its first great achievement, the People’s Republic sought to bring China's sorrow under the control of man. Thus came about the country's first great dam: the Sanmenxia.

"But, changing winds in Cino-Sovet relationship caused Stalin to completely recall the team by 1960..." (Stlin died in 1953!)

Stalin is very loyal to sino-soviet friendship and their ideological ties, he would never do such a thing even until his death in 1953

"Caused Stalin to completely recall the team by 1960." Um, who and when?

Seems to be an editing issue. The Sino Soviet split caused the Soviet team to have to leave China in 1960.

It's still there and it's doing what it's supposed to be doing. They even planted more trees along the river. It's beautiful.

Stalin died in 1953. He couldn't have recalled the Soviet engineers in 1960.

Not sure that I would agree that any party which is prepared to ignore sound advice on the basis of its leader having declared the person who provided it a "rightist" can accurately be described as "having got it right". The penchant of all psychopathic leaders like Mao towards distorting reality invariably results in woe. See January 6th 2020.

The truth should be judged by historical records, not politicized narratives. They might have stumbled a bunch but they did get it right eventually. All governments make mistakes due to political blinders. Anyone who has lived thru 2003 knows how many people were silenced for "disloyalty" in refusing to support the US invasion of Iraq.

mao isn't perfect, no leader was. to understand china you have to look at it in context to the chaos and instability that led to leaders like mao. china was ruled by emperor and military dictators before the CCP tookover. There were no institution ready to address scientific and environmental challenges. the leaders themselves took up those challenges and implemented policies that often failed. China has gone through countless reforms to address these problems and todays china is the result of those reforms

@@levelazn I was absolutely disposed to think well of Mao. After all, Mao said such nice things about my cousin Norman in his little red book! But having read quite extensively about the man, I have altered my opinion. He did not have anything that one could recognize as a conscience, and allowed his ego to push him to harm an astonishing number of fellow humans. Remember Master Kong, the first recorded enunciator of that fundamental human principle: "Do not do to others that which you would hate done to yourself."

@@davidford694 yeah. That Kong phrase has been practiced by the Chinese Thus far. 40 years without a single shot fired in any wars while China developed economically
