Death were a proto-punk band, and recorded that record in 1975. Yes, they formed the same year most of the bigger names in punk did, but they did not play punk music. Yes, it's fast. Yes, it's angry. Yes, the record even has slow, but very real, blast beats. But Death is not a hardcore band. They're certainly more hardcore in their aggressiveness than some early punk bands, but it's still only rock and roll. Not far removed stylistically from bands like New York Dolls, MC5, etc. Of course, they are not to be confused with the death metal band Death, who are much more popular.
