According to Wikipedia, Paddy Mayne was born to a prominant family in County Down, who owned quite a bit of land and several businesses, he attended Regent House Grammar school and and prior to the was was studying to be a solicitor. He also played Rugby (a very middle class sport at the time) at the international level. So, while he wasn't exaclty landed gentry, this idea that he was a rough edged commoner who would enjoy poitín is dramatic license to say the least, and utter bollox to say more than that.

I have read much about the SAS and Paddy Mayne. I have watched this series. There is not a lot of commonality. Yes they did have a camp in the desert away from Cairo. Yes it was rough and yes they did steal a lot of their equipment (including a piano). However, they were not a bunch of ruffians who spent their days drinking and laying around. Their time was spent in hard training to perfect their equipment and techniques. They did not go racing across the desert firing off guns. Mostly they travelled at night and hid during the day. They tried to avoid leaving tyre trails or even footprints as these could be seen by enemy reconnaissance aircraft. Planning for separate missions would be done by the members of that mission so that if captured they could not give details of what the other groups were doing. The show takes too too much from Fight Club and Snatch. There are some really silly bits such as priming bombs while they are still in the truck. The jewish soldier, despite being determined was simply not tough enough or fit enough to have been included. First episode was very good but it ran out of ideas and credibility after that.

There is plenty of commonality and what you have pointed out are minor details. Of course some changes need to be made for it to work as a show and there is actually a documentary series available on Iplayer to accompany this if anyone is interested in knowing more accurate details of what went on. The show never claimed to be entirely accurate in the first place anyway, stating that the events deputed are mostly true. I think you’re being a tad pedantic
@iplanes1

@@seankilburn7200 OK you can have a bit of poetic licence to make the story run more smoothly but if I was the son or grandson of one of these guys I would not be happy with the image of my ancestor spending most of his time drinking and sitting in a deckchair. In order to be as good as they were, just like the modern SAS, they worked hard on getting the best out of their equipment and being fit. So OK with the fun with fireworks but not OK with the image of a bunch of unwashed drunks in the desert. They had beards to conserve water (for shaving) and to keep the sand out. What they got up to on leave in Cairo is a different matter

Paddy Mayne wasn't a hot-head in battle but he did get roaring drunk at times and during those benders he was likely to beat anyone up and not recall it. Paddy Mayne hated foul language and never swore which they have him doing in this series. I haven't seen this series yet but the bits I've watched on You Tube give me the impression that they have taken liberties with the truth. For instance is this video supposed to portray Stirling giving orders for an attack on a number of airfields. No one, not even with guys as experienced as the SAS would give such loose direction. I also think they used the story that when Stirling recruited Mayne he (Mayne) was under arrest for striking his CO, That has been proved to be a complete fabrication but gets repeated often. That always happens in this type of program but the real story of what the SAS did in North Africa does not need embellishment. "Paddy Mayne" by Hamish Ross is worth a read.
