If you read David Stirling’s biography the first SAS mission was a total disaster. They jumped in high winds and all of them disappeared. Swallowed by the desert and never heard from again. There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity and in that particular case they crossed it. It had never been done and they decided to try it. They were desperate times.

@@17MrLeon yes but this is a dramatization. Probably 3/4 of it is made up - like the sexy french intelligence chick - to make for a more entertaining series. Also the capture of Stirling bears no resemblance to how it actually happened. My point was to confirm that this incident was based on fact.

It is not unheard of for educated, landowning professionals to imagine themselves as simple philosopher-farmers. The way in which Thomas Jefferson waxed eloquent about the virtues of agrarian democracy, you would have thought that he was living off of fifteen acres and not running a large, failing commercial enterprise with hundreds of enslaved persons while moonlighting as a political leader.
