I saw the last loyalist parade in Toronto, Canada (The Belfast of North America, it used to be called) in 1995. Very old men with orange sashes marched down Yonge Street. They controlled the city for many years but that's all done now.

Hello sir, just commenting hoping to receive elaboration and insight. Sounds like something very interesting and I would love to have the ability to learn about it. If you have any free time I would be more than delighted to receive a reply giving more information about the context.

@@brenndelta5239the power structure of Toronto was largely run by Scots Presbyterians and Northern Irish Protestants in the late 19th and the 20th century until about 1970 or so. The orange lodges were powerful and certain ones controlled the civil service, the police, the transit system and so forth. If you weren't in the "right" lodge you couldn't get a job as a streetcar driver, just for example. It was after WW2 when the lodges started to diminish in power when waves of immigrants came to Toronto, from mainly Italy and Poland. The laws were pretty restrictive in the 1950s. On Sunday, no movies, no ball games and they would lock up the swings in parks so they couldn't be used. Hard to believe but it's true. Fun was not allowed on Sunday.

It reminds me of the northern orange men winding people up, working class people against each other but catholics in the north had no basic rights up to the seventies, I believe Ireland will be united one day sooner than later, the northern Protestants may even like the idea of living in peace with their unique ‘orange’ identity celebrated without aggression, the whole island of Ireland could be extra prosperous ☘️🇮🇪

The Vatican will be ready to kill us Protestants again if they can! But we are ready for them! NO Surrender! God is with the Protestants! Long live Israel! Down the Catholic invention called Islam!

There's over 35,000 orange men, with maybe only 2 or 3 starting fights every year, so it can't reasonably be said that we're all causing trouble.

This is not an Irish nationalist song, it’s a protestant loyalist song
@yoshii63
@yoshii63 Жыл бұрын
The versions commonly thrown around are. However this was played by the Wolfe Tones. A nationalist band. They change the lyrics so it's more neutral. The second verse leans a good bit nationalist with "and united we'll be when there's no more border line"
@callumring6539
@callumring6539 11 ай бұрын
@@yoshii63 The wolfe tones, yes, they have a bunch of Irish rebel song, however, this is a loyalist song nor do they care about the loalists up north. They do celebrate Irish culture and whatever, however, this goes to show that they are sympathetic towards loyalist music. Like 'The Sash' that you had uploaded. 'The Sash' is an explicitly Loyalist song only sung by Orange Men and Women. The song could also be sung by people in the republic or Ireland... If they were Loyalists. So, this is an Orange song that The Wolfe Tones had played. Even Wolfe Tone himself didn't have hatred towards the protestants, but had wanted peace between Catholics and Protestants living together... In a Catholic country.
