This is a perfect patriotic song. It tells the entire story, the good and the bad, frequently mentions that they weren't always in the right, but they were still able to love their homeland for what it was, flaws and all because that's what it was made from.

Something else to take from it is they fought black nationalists led partly by Mugabe, a communist, and the Rhodesian security forces had native Africans and settlers along with foreign volunteers in their ranks. Mostly Brits, Americans and Europeans.

@@AshleyGravesreal Rhodesian Security Forces were 80%+ black. Even after independence, I met a group of ZANU-PF mujibas (all carrying AK47s - I was unarmed), who greeted me with much hostility, but soon changed to be friends. I asked them about Gukurahundi (it was 1984) and they all hung their heads in shame. They knew. It was the Lundi River bed btw. So sad how things have gone.

@@wulfengel the Rhodesian Security Forces were 80%+ black Rhodesians. Foreign fighters were great (committed) but few and far between. Local white soldiers were more scarce - especially after 77. That's why those who DID serve are so SPECIAL.

And to be fair: The burden foisted upon the White Rhodesians was huge. Very few could carry it through - and it's wrong to blame those who didn't. But equally, it's right to praise those who did - great people in the face of insurmountable odds. But did it anyway - true Rhodesians. We honour them all They believed. I remember this song well when I lived there 1978-80 as a 25-year-old journalist. (I entered the country as a student, and obtained a job as a subeditor on The Bulawayo Chronicle). The time there defined and moulded my identity and values. Returned twice to Zimbabwe in recent years as a tourist. Of course things are very different now. Rhodesia/Zimbabwe has become an ideological symbol for both the left and right. The truth, like most important things, is probably much more nuanced.

It was a war between democracy and communism. With Soviet Union and North Koreans supporting Mugabe who was a criminal. No. This one was a simple battle of good and evil.
@Buckshon1953
@Buckshon1953 2 жыл бұрын
@@evaboyer1328 I disagree. Rhodesia could hardly be considered to be "democratic" under white minority rule (unless, of course you were white.) And it is simplistic to say that the black nationalists were "communists" -- Mugabe, I agree, trended in that direction (and used the North Koreans abusively in Matebeleland in 1982-3) but it is less clear about Joshua Nkomo. That said, there was plenty of 'evil' on both sides (or maybe three or more sides (if you consider the black tribes/nationalist parties as different). Plenty of people on both sides paint this conflict as you assert in a simple good vs. evil model but I saw instead a multifaceted and truly complex story. Yes, I entered the country as a typical "biased" left-leaning journalist -- but by the end of my stay I could see the ideologues on both sides were papering over their failings and denying any good on the other side. Probably normal behaviour in a war, of course, but hardly a truthful reflection of the situation.
@Buckshon1953
@Buckshon1953 2 жыл бұрын
@John Wayne I wouldn't say it was "doomed from the start" but by 1978 when Clem Thelot published this song, it was too late. By then the insurgency had effectively gained control over most of the country and any moderate or reconciliable forces were far too weak to change things. I sense if the political organization of what was briefly Zimbabwe Rhodesia had been implemented 20 or even 10 years earlier, it could have worked out reasonably well. South Africa's transition to majority rule in the next decade proves the point. Conditions in RSA are of course far from perfect, but that nation found its way to reconciliation before things got totally out of hand.

Russians are inherently very individualistic, socialism is directly contradictory to that. Rhodesia wasn't fascist either. There were several general elections during their short history, and fascism doesn't really work general elections. They were all won by the same party, by the way

What a time it was With so few friends to turn to What a time it was When all we did seemed wrong We'd broken all our bonds And the battle plan was drawn What a time What a time it was 1965, the year of U.D.I. Who'd have thought the country Would survive or stay alive The UN made us outcasts And the British said we couldn't last That we would fall when the oil did not arrive Now, I don't say we were right And I don't say we were wrong I'm just trying to tell it Like it was, in simple song You see when people love their homeland They regard it as their own land And they fight whether they're right or they are wrong What a time it was With all the world against us What a time it was Not all we did was wrong We'd broken all our bonds But life kept going on What a time What a time it was 1966 saw some ocean politics When two men climbed the Tiger To have talks about the talks They talked, and talked, and talked, and talked And talked, and talked some more The negotiations ended in deadlock And in 1968, there was another great debate This time aboard the Fearless But the end was much the same November saw a new flag raised While the people prayed for better days And hope was still the surname of the game And in 1970, our republic came to be Solution seemed to fly A little further out of reach But the next year through the gloom Came Sir Alec Douglas-Home And it seemed they found a way across the bridge So in early '72, Lord Pearce and his retinue Arrived to put the nation To a test that they had planned But still it seemed the plan was bad No better than the last they'd had And no's the word we heard across the land What a time it was With all the world against us What a time it was When all we did seemed wrong We'd broken all our bonds And the battle plan was drawn What a time What a time it was 1975, and Mr. Vorster had arrived With President Kaunda For some talks across the falls But nothing there could be resolved The problem still was too involved And the impetus slowed down until it stalled 1976 was when cosmopolitics Finally put pressure On the players in the game Kissinger's proposals Were broadcast to the nation With one man and one vote the final aim Well, Geneva should've sealed it But instead, it just revealed That all the players in the game were pulled apart Well, they had to find a way To start again another day With all prepared to take a peaceful part What a time it was With all the world against us What a time it was When all we did seemed wrong We'd broken all our bonds And the battle carried on What a time What a time it was Now, in 1978, while the rest still vacillate We found a way to work it out Within the land Never mind the rest What we're doing's for the best And all we want is a peace we understand There'll be votes for all the folks And with sanctions gone, we hope To rebuild this little country To a proud and single nation We've got to end this dreadful war We've found what we've been fight for Will the world wake up and stop this conflagration What a time it's been With so few friends to turn to What a time it's been When all we did seemed wrong We're trying to put things right But the battle still goes on What a time What a time it's been
