ICBM's have been "russian nesting dolls" since the late 60's. In the 2000's an AVERAGE Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) could carry up to 16 independently targetable warheads at a time. What really sets this one apart is the "hypersonic" part.
@Fhcghcg1
@Fhcghcg1 3 жыл бұрын
Not exactly true, a ICBM has to be hypersonic to be on a trajectory that would make it intercontinental (pretty important for a ICBM). Even the German WWII V-2 missiles would nearly reach hypersonic speeds.
@SimonsAuntPhyllis
@SimonsAuntPhyllis 3 жыл бұрын
@@Fhcghcg1 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️ Missiles go "Supersonic" (Mach 1-4). Hypersonic is 5-28 times the speed of sound. Hypersonic weapons, because they're going so fast, are not restricted to traditional ballistic path. They are smart devices with such an array of sensors they could fly autonomously around enemy defenses, and then give up their intended target at the last minute by diving straight down when overhead. Also, due to their incredible speed, no warhead is actually needed on a hypersonic missle. The kinetic energy alone would yeild something close to a tactical nuclear weapon.
@SimonsAuntPhyllis

@@Fhcghcg1 Also, ICBM's go SUPERSONIC, not hypersonic. And you wouldn't really call a hypersonic weapon "ballistic". The are very smart and very very fast.
@johnkepa2240
@johnkepa2240 3 жыл бұрын
@@Fhcghcg1 ICBM are hypersonic any rocket capable of reaching orbit needs to be at hypersonic speeds. So our system can detect nuclear launch and respond within 30 minutes. Hence the term "minutemen". This missle can get from Moscow US within 35 minutes. That means that we will only have 5 minute warning. What's even scarier is that they can be put on trucks and even in shipping containers. If launched from a Russian freighter on the ocean, we'd literally have no warning.

Calling an ICBM "hypersonic" is an oxymoron as all ICBM's are Hypersonic when re-entering the atmosphere. The "upgrade" of this missile is that it accelerates into orbit much faster, giving U.S. Infra red tracking satellites less time to identify and track the missile. The Satan-2 also can carry up to FIFTEEN Independently maneuverable re-entry nuclear warheads. While the missile can maneuver, I have not see anything that says it can fly through valleys and around mountains, but being able to modify it's ballistic arc does give it an advantage in that it makes it harder to predict the track in order to intercept.

the nukes carried on American subs have the option of a tip that breaks into 14 smaller nukes and can target individual targets as well. They also travel at 17000mph sub orbit, but still. They could get from say north dakota to moscow in 20 mins or less. Those subs are always off the coast of China and Japan. So, a strike would be about 5 mins tops. 24 nukes that can break into 14 smaller ones in 5 minutes could do some damage. Each sub would technically be capable of nuking 336 different targets at once.

Wrong. THAAD(terminal high altitude air defense) goes Mach 8.2. SM3 block 2A goes Mach 16-18. SM6 block 1b or 2A will go atleast Mach 5. The US is the only country in the world that has proven itself capable of intercepting hypersonic missiles. AEGIS the radar that guides the SM3 and SM6 I mentioned isn’t a limitation either, it can target hypersonic missiles. The US has gone a different route with anti ship missiles. Instead of speed to counter missile defenses we went with stealth. Missiles like the Norwegian NSM(naval strike missile) in operation by the US or the AGM 158 both have reduced radar cross sections as well as reduced IR signatures. Stealth plus the fact it is subsonic which allows for high g maneuvering will make it very difficult to defend against. No hypersonic missile can do high g maneuvers to evade a CIWS or similar.

The long-range stealth nuclear equipped torpedo called the "Poseidon" is the weaponized stealth sub that the video mentioned. I think it's fired from a larger vessel, perhaps. I think it's designed to create Tsunami's along a coast. The development of the Rs. 28 started when the United states dropped out of the INF treaty and build a missile defense shield over Romania. "Don't worry," NATO said to Russia, "it's purely defensive and it's for Iran". US defense contractors then demonstrated how they could fire a tomahawk nuclear capable cruise missile from it back in 2017. and viola! Welcome to the new arms race! Those in the know, would know that this is not the first time NATO thought they could use ABMs to win a nuclear war, In fact the development of ABMs triggered an arms race with IRBMs and MIRV ICBMs that resulted in cooler heads signing the ABM treaty back in the 1970s. The simple logic is: If one party thinks they can win a nuclear war, then they will pre-emptively attack and trigger one. NATO did a nuclear weapons exercise in the bearing sea 2 years ago. They have started to train for marine landing in the north against Russia. There is no such thing as a defensive marine landing. This is why Russia developed the S-400, S-500 systems, the Rs. 28 Sarmat, the air launched hypersonic ballistic missile Kh-47M2 Kinzhal (NATO name X-47M2 Killjoy) and the newly announced anti-ship hypersonic cruise missile known as the Zircon. basically they want weapons that can evade NATOs air defenses rendering then ineffective or destroy their ABMs. This is the arms race that results from developing these Missile defense shields. Russian doctrine is that deterrence though MAD must be maintained. Lets be realists - the only reason WW3 hasn't started it because of it.

Well, that sounds pretty terrible and all, but I'm sure other militaries have similar stuff going on, too, but they don't brag about it to the world... well, not much, anyway... ;-) Thanks for sharing, Simon. :-) To me the most badass missile that I know that they ever actually made in Russia was their P700 Granit, a very technically-sophisticated programmable 'smart'-missile. Those things are friggin' nuts, man.... they're about 33 feet long and about 33 inches in diameter at their widest girth, weigh over 7 tons, go through the air at speeds of MACH 2.5 and more and can travel in interconnected multi-missile flocks, and they each have a thick armor-piercing hardened-steel outer body and an even-harder-steel inner capsule assembly to contain the nuclear primary and the thermonuclear secondary and control circuitry , and those P700s were designed to stab through the side of an aircraft carrier like a big giant armor-piercing exploding bullet and detonate inside the carrier with a half-megaton TNT-equivalence yield thermonuclear explosion and reduce the ship to fluffy metal dust particles.
