Nice work! Nothing "wrong" with using old saw blades or other tool steels for blades. I'd still re-quench the blade once it was profiled though. Use a torch to heat up just the "edge" and quench it in some preheated oil, then sand it clean again and temper it in an oven for a couple hours to get the best possible edge.

Love that you used Mesquite as your handle material. It's such an underrated and underappreciated hardwood. Highly resistant to rot, harder than any oak or maple, super stable once dry, takes glues and finishes pretty well. The only bitch about it is getting long straight pieces and it can be murder on tools. I laughed when you sharpened up the drill bit immediately after telling us about using Mesquite as your knife scales and thought, yup dude knows what he's talking about. And for people who don't know, mesquite grows in the hot, dry areas of the Southwestern USA and Mexico. It takes a long time to get a big enough tree for lumber and because of the wind in these areas, you end up with some pretty gnarled shapes, lots of figure and inclusions. Also, you get sand in your lumber because it blows in, the tree grows and it absolutely eats saw blades and drill bits. Don't ask for long clear boards of mesquite, because they just don't exist. But the color and figure you get out of the pieces is just gorgeous. It's heavy as rocks so maybe don't make a violin or a baseball bat out of the stuff but for all sorts of other things, it's fantastic. Hardness is generally above Hickory and almost approaches some Rosewoods. And chances are if you're anywhere from South Texas to Southern California and The US Mexico border on up to Southern Utah, you can find it everywhere.

I always wanted to do the saw blade knife build, I think I started when I was younger. it came out good, though! maybe some knurling on the shoulder, for thumb pressure. nothing too serious, though. just some texture for thumb to push against without sliding off.also a slight bevel on the back. rounding it over just a little means the back of the knife doesn't have hard edges that can be harsh on fingers etc. *ponders making a new kitchen knife out of something at some point. I miss having a knoife of my own. broke mine a couple years back.
@homesteadonomics4 жыл бұрын

@@homesteadonomics Very much so. there's a few things I've really though about, having used a kitchen knife A LOT. I"m no pro chef, but enough of a foodie to be the designated dinner maker in houses for the last ten years...for one thing, having a smooth curved transition from blade to handle. the bolster area needs to be curved. so you can get a sponge or wash cloth in there. if you don't you make a dirt magnet spot. also curves are good. hard corners on metal makes for uncomfortable grip. you know that "proper" knife grip of pinching the blade? yeah, you can get a blister on your index finger if the spine of the blade near the grip isn't rounded and soft. aside from that...you need a point for piercing but not too flimsy a tip that it breaks. #rambling.

Great Knife! Now all it needs a holder to slip it into. Maybe a wooden one to match the handle? How about a cloth polishing wheel in a grinder and some rosin to make that blade sing. That handle is fantastic, can't think of any way to make it better.
@tango-bravo3 жыл бұрын
Very nice job on the knife overall. One thing that seems like a weakness is the slotted handle. I assume you did that because drilling through a hardened saw blade wasn’t an option. While the hollow pins will likely offer some attachment strength, if the epoxy gives way the entire handle could slide forward or backwards, potentially causing a serious injury. One technique to overcome this that would kill two birds with one stone would be to soften the tang area slowly with a blowtorch, soft enough to where you could drill conventional pin holes. You could probably drill a few holes with a good metal cutting bit, especially with a drill sharpener nearby! By tempering the handle a little softer you will reduce the inherent brittleness in the hardened blade. Dimpling the handle to help the epoxy bite was a good decision as well. The proportions of the knife and handle look well-done and thoughtfully executed. Thanks for sharing and I hope you see this as constructive feedback. 👍
