As Queen of England, Matilda was a generous benefactor. She founded the leper hospital of St Giles in Holborn, and the priory of Holy a trinity at Aldgate, and she built the first public lavatory and public bath in the city of London. She also patronised writers and musicians, she was particularly fond of music and generous to good church musicians,

She sounds like an amazing woman, the kind of ferociously intelligent, spirited, strong-willed, probably beautiful women that I always admire. The kind for whom the concept of "other people guaranteeing women's rights to her" would have been a flat insult. Because she didn't need anyone else to do stuff for her. Thanks for a great story!
@nancyholcombe803010 ай бұрын
@benjaminlasseter, never forget that rights like those you are talking about should also be extended to those who aren't strong enough to stand up for them. I'm having to stand up for mine in the States right now and it makes me sick to think of how many elderly women are probably getting cheated like they're trying to do to me because they don't understand what they're entitled to by law! Men who don't have education could be having the same problem too! Does that change the equation?

I knew the story of Edith/Matilda. I always wondered how convents and monasteries raised very young children. Were there nannies or were some members of the religious community charged with nursemaid duties? The death of William Rufus has always been a subject of debate because some thought the king was assassinated to pave the way for Henry I. Supposedly, Edith/Matilda was beautiful .Edith/ Matilda had two children, but her flagrantly unfaithful husband fathered many illegitimate children. Edith/ Matilda was the maternal grandmother of Henry II and, therefore, the ancestress of the current Royal Family.
