@@balwindergill1 The problem with this is it targets dumb people, or rather the word I'd like to use "uneducated" which means they're purposely targetting the most vulnerable part of the population so every victim saved counts, the victims aren't just numbers, they're people with their savings on the line so yes it does matter a lot, I know you aren't saying that they mean nothing but it does mean a lot to the victim I'd imagine. So more of a show of sympathy, I'm not sure if this is what you meant though. Also I have older parents and I'm not sure if they would believe it but one of them has believed this conspiracy about putting the vaccine in the right or left arm does something bad (WHICH IS FALSE PLEASE) so yes people can believe a lot of stupid crap, especially with fear/risk that comes with the pitches.

What if the scammers download a keylogger onto the person's computer and has the person log into their bank account? If those people don't have two factor authentication, then what's stopping the scammers from actually accessing the bank accounts themselves later on? VPN's are a thing, so they can make it appear like they are in the same city the victims are in. Sure, the victim can later talk to the bank about their money being gone, but by that time the scammers could have already laundered it away by using various services like Paxful. When the scammers obtain access to the computers they have essentially free reign on the person's machine, they can do pretty much whatever to it. With these victims generally being elderly, then they're probably unaware of the dangers and what types of things can be done to their computers.

@@christianponce4836 Most definitely not. It would ruin his credibility to start off with a lie. However, it wouldn't be a problem if he has a job somewhere to present himself as someone from that company. For instance, let's say that Jim has a weekend job collecting mail at Google, he could say Hi, I'm Jim, from Google. But I don't think it matters much because it's just much easier to convince someone of a lie than to convince them they're being lied to. Using the same tactics is only serving to prime the victim to be convinced by charisma instead of factual information. That's not helping but damaging. I know that society as a whole leans towards trusting convincing voices rather than facts because it's just easier to rely on feeling than it is to rely on thinking critically, but that's something we need to change, not something we need to encourage by perpetuating it. I think that Jim is one of the better examples of how to approach a victim in an encouraging and understanding manner while also providing useful information that helps arm people against the next scam. In the end, if people let Jim explain, they don't have to trust him at all because Jim explained what happened and how they can check it and that they should contact their own bank about it.

There was a time when Singapore was a famous drug ring in the past; however, nowadays they’re a few of the countries toughest on drug enforcement and penalties (if you go to Singapore and a cop there spots you smoking a joint in public. It’s likely you’ll just get an ass-beating with a night stick and told not to do it again, no citation (this is anecdotal evidence, not cited or true), this form of punishment is known as caning. India has a country with 1 billion people, they have to manage all those people and make sure everything is okay. The Indian government I don’t know if they’re “trying their best” to stop these scammers, but I would hope they do frown upon scammers and would actively enforce the law to prevent technology support scam buildings.

well in this case, I believe the scammers were using threats instead of simple trickery to get the money. The man who was in the process of being scammed said it quite a bit that if he didn't proceed with what they were asking, they would ruin him financially. the reason they call the scammers in the first place is that they expect support. they get a strange email talking about money and so they expect these people to be some sort of support so yeah I don't blame them, especially as I'm sure 99% of those who are scammed are old and barely know anything about the internet.

Come on, the scammers spend hours and days with their victims, manipulate them to think they're on their side or are bosses/FBI or something like that and only much later, when they won't pay, do the threats start. The victims are so fished in they don't know what to do, and are terrified.
@gnomeam

It's easy to trick people. It's hard to convince them that they've been tricked. The scammers don't present themselves as randoms, they take positions of authority (some government agency, a technician from a telecomms company, etc.). Because of this, they gain a level of trust from the victim, with nothing to challenge it. Later on, Jim calls them, without any kind of ostensible authority, and proceeds to tell them to disobey this other person who they presume has some kind of authority over them. That's why they're suspicious.
@DeepakChhikara

Because from victim's perspective: They got a call about a fake item being purchased from their account/some virus in their computer and THEY reach out to the call center(scammer). Then scammer get enough time(30-60 minutes) to sell a well choreographed story. Whereas Jim is calling them out of no where, without any context or story. For them this looks more suspicious, and rightly so. I think Jim took some failures to learn to choose the words carefully to win trust in minimum time.
