The first time I hiked up the mountain it was in the rain and fog. My girlfriend drove up the mountain and was terrified. When she saw me coming up the trail, she started crying….. mainly because she was so relieved that I could drive down. I about cried as well because I didn’t want to hike back down. lol. I acted like I was going to hike back down. She begged me to drive. lol. I did get rewarded to bail on my hike. lol.

Ugh! Always someone in a big truck, or mini-van (or just someone who is having vertigo/anxiety) having to stop every 10 ft. Then you had to get your bike moving again in gravel dozens of times on, like, a 25 degree grade! Glad they paved it, but I will miss the challenge.

One thing to remember when going up a mountain is coming down on the same gear. That will save your brakes and keep them from heating up. My goal with this video was to show the entire road so that you know what to expect. It's not a technical ride.....just high elevation with AMAZING views. I've been up and down that mountain on a bike 5 times! It's an impressive, fun, and beautiful ride. I only go on weekdays (Mon-Wed is best cause way fewer cars!) I like to go in late July or Early August so it is reasonably warm at the top. You should always have a sweatshirt/coat and raincoat in your saddlebags; because conditions can change quickly, and weather reporting in New England is all coin-tosses. I think it would be scarier in a car, because on a bike you know exactly where the edge of the road is. Once you get above the tree line, it is amazing! Great video!

I did this during Covid. It was Summer at the base and felt like Winter at the top. The ride was pretty easy there was only a short section of unpaved road. I made it up in about 15 min or less. Going down requires a bit more focus but was fine other than some slow cars in front of me.

Thank you for the nice vedio. When going down Mt Washington, vehicles traveling down will need to be on the lowest gear a lot of times to reduce the brake friction heat, causing it from engaging, and vehicles go out of control. In 2001, I bought my brand new Ultra and took it to New Hampshire from Ontario Canada for a vacation in Aug 2002. Went up Mt Washington to help me overcome my fear of heights. Well! After about mile 2 the pavement turned to gravel. No problem, I thought, I live on a gravel road. But those last few hairpins with 10 degree grades had me alternating between praying and cursing! And I’m a Christian! I’d be leaning and turning sharply to go up, and the tour bus van would be coming down and hogging the centre of the road! I narrowly missed hitting their mirror! Made it to the top but it was around 4pm on Aug 2nd and it started to snow! Light flakes though. Bring some warm clothes and gloves! It’s about 6300 ft elevation. Two guys came up with Quebec plates, one on a FatBoy the other on a LowRider. I offered to trade the guy on the LowRider even up for my big cow of an Ultra…..😮😅 We stayed for a little while so we could see the Steam powered Cog train. What a beauty! It came time to go down OH BOY! I practically screamed all the way! I rode my brakes a little and just wanted to keep going to get it over with but by the time I reached the second pull over stop, I had about 1/8 of an inch of brake lever pull left and very little brakes! Fortunately I came to a stop upright. I stopped at every pullover after that to cool my brakes until we got to the paved rd again. So folks if you ride your brakes they have to cool off or you’ll have none! So pullover on those pull offs! When I got to the bottom we pulled over and I got off my bike and kissed the ground. My husband took a picture of me doing it and we still laugh about it to this day. I got the bumper sticker to prove it and proudly displayed it on the back of my tourpak lid. God was looking after me that day and Jesus is my passenger, along with the Holy Spirit, but I don’t think I’ll go back up Mt Washington because I’m still afraid of heights. Except maybe on that Cog train. 🚂 I said maybe…..😂❤

@@RidingandWrenching Hey CUE it’s me again. In mid July 2012 I did a solo run from Toronto Ontario Canada to Fairplay CO for the annual “Colorado Ladies Day Run” I took the Ultra again this time with 150K miles on it. I won first prize for the longest distance travelled at 1800 miles. I had a great time and met some great people. I got the elevation sickness though because I live at 300 ft above sea level and Fairplay was 10,000 ft. I felt a pain in my chest and lungs like a heart attack. I bought 3 of those oxygen puffers and the next day I was ok. I had 2 weeks vacation so I went to the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Silverton CO. The ride was fabulous even though there were no guardrails and 600ft drops, I was ok even though I’m not crazy about heights. If you go from north up in Ouray to south down in Silverton (9300ft) you’ll have less sheer drop off with no guardrails. Trust me it was nowhere near as crazy as Mt Washington. But I’ll tell you what is…. Black Canyon of the Gunneson CO, it’s on the way to the Million$ hwy. It’s got 16 degree grades, gravel rd and some switchbacks and it’s really cold at the bottom because the canyon is narrow and completely shaded between the black granite. On the way back up I had to stand up because I couldn’t see over my windshield. It’s WORSE than Mt Washington if you want a challenge. I had to lie down in the grass when I got to the top. 😵‍💫 After I left Silverton I took the highway to Durango CO and it was just beautiful. Stayed at historic hotels the Grand Imperial in Silverton and the Strater Hotel in Durango. Best trip of my life! Then I left and hi tailed to Utah. I headed to a place in Mexican Hat UT that has a rd called the Moky Dugway. Google it. Then I took off for the Arches State Park. Most beautiful place I’d ever been to on a motorcycle. I arrived 1.5 hr before dusk camped there and left at dawn. RESERVE IT. You won’t regret it. 😊

Thanks for sharing. It didn't look too bad to me. Not as many hairpin turns compared to the road up Pikes Peak in Colorado, but what makes that road even more challenging is the altitude -- almost twice tat of Mt. Washington. Even so, not too scary of a road as long as you have the right type of bike and skill/attitude.

I rode up Mt. Washington about 30 years ago. Back then the top half was dirt. Riding down was wild. There is a long ramp with a left turn at the bottom. From this are you see ski resorts at lower elevation. It looks like the road stops and will launch you into the sky.

I just completed this ride in June of this year while attending the Laconia rally. It was on my bucket list for a while and I'm so glad I did it. It was a little hairy, but it was definitely worth the effort. The ride up and back from Wolfeboro New Hampshire where I was staying was also a joy. One of the best parts was, that I had just had a cam and exhaust installed on the bike at the rally, so that the sound of the engine braking on the way down was music to my ears.😊

Our gold wing chapter rode up some time in mid 80s. It was a blistering 95F at the base and around 40F at summit. Glad we had helmets to keep our heads warm, tourists in cars weren’t so lucky. They’d get out of their cars wearing shorts and Tees and thought they were gonna die. At least us bikers were fully dressed. The wind was so strong that we had a heck of a time getting the bikes onto their sidestands the way we had parked. 700 lb bike and the wind is keeping it from leaning left onto the stand. Not the scariest, curviest, tallest road to a summit, but for sure one of the wildest weather changes I’ve ever experienced in a few short miles.

Great video, thanks for sharing! I live in NH, some FYI: the upper portion of the road at one time was not paved. There is a marker off the road close to the top where a hiker or hikers didn't make it to the top because of bad weather that came in, they didn't realize how close they were to safety and they lost their lives at that point. You can see the summit just above where they were at, so they were so close but yet so far.

Great video, I've done it a few times and it is intense. Only things I can add are to be prepared for at least a 30 deg temperature drop at the top. I bring cold-weather gear with me just in case. Second, make sure the bike is up for it. One of my friends had old brake and clutch fluid and he lost his clutch at the summit because the water bubbles in the clutch fluid froze. We turned the clutch side of the bike into the sun and that helped to warm it up.

I might put that on my list of rides next season. Although, if I can get my knees straight, I'd like to hike to the top first. Hiking is much more dangerous on that mountain, but when you hike places like that, it is a thrill and a feeling of accomplishment when you're standing at the top, your legs feeling like spaghetti noodles that are burning, and your heart racing. You look down at the valley below, and think, "WOW" that was totally worth the work". That's what I love about hiking/climbing the Appalachians. In fact, the end of the Appalachian trail is at Mt. Washington, or the beginning, depending if you are heading south instead of north. Another bucket list of mine, is a complete AT thru-hike starting in Georgia all the way to Mt. Washington.

Where a brass plate with arrows directing too all the mountains visible. Very impressive, but scarey on a bike. Other is also a mountain with road winding to its top. South of Bend is LaPine, Oregon, East is a volcanic mountain that blew up an made two lakes, Pauline Lake an East Lake. The Peck between lakes is Paulina Butte. This will give you the rush of getting to top by motorcycle an rush getting down. You can see 5 States from top. The weather was just like your day but I'm more jealous of your ride because you weren't stuck behind individuals that suddenly got vertigo after the first mile😡. I was stuck in 1st gear for 75% going up. Parked on the second level lot. Poor French girl dumped her bike with all of the traffic and fell over just as she pulled into the lot. No injuries, just embarrassed. Going down was a little better until I caught up with a red Camaro white knuckling it. Mt Washington was this year's ride.
