that is legit one of my worst fears. whenever I am solo camping I always pick a place that allows me to make a quick getaway if required. I also transitioned from a pickup with a RTT to a 1st gen 4runner so if I need to jump in the drivers seat and leave in a moments notice I can in seconds. I also love going on solo night wheeling trips, but if I ever run across someone camping I immediately leave. the people who did that to you are real scumbags.

You can absolutely describe this experience as traumatic. I've lived a life of risk and have loved every minute of it. But as I get older and my boy and girl join me in my adventures, nothing is more terrifying than when things start to go sideways, knowing that their safety - physical and emotional - is in my hands and there is no one there to protect them but me and whatever preparations I made beforehand. Making the decision to stay or leave your kids, all to keep them safe, is something that would be difficult for your mind to discard. Thank you for making this video. It's valuable and important... for you and also us.

When I camp solo (without other rigs in my group) I often bring an AR-15. Imagine them throwing rocks and playing thriller and then getting rocked by sustained, accurate fire. A very scary situation though. They outnumbered you and ambushed you at night. Especially scary given you had little ones with you.

I’ve definitely considered carrying more powerful protection but ultimately I think a pistol is easier. On the fence though. Thanks for commenting. You’re absolutely right, having little ones complicates the situation. I wouldn’t have stayed in the tent as long if I was solo.

I'm 57 years old and have had 2 similar encounters with different circumstances. Both in the middle of the night. Thankfully for me it was just myself and my dog, my children are all adults. I initially experienced the fear, anxiety, and apprehension you described. In both instances that quickly turned to anger. Anyone or group who does what you described is crazy in my opinion. Who rolls up on an unknown campsite acting crazy like that. As a combat veteran it was much the same, initially fear than quick to anger that an entity directly or indirectly is a threat to my gift of life. I won't get into details but I will quote......"When you find yourself in a room surrounded by your enemies you should tell yourself I am not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

This was incredible. I want to like it 5000 times. Everyone's trauma's are personal, no need to compare it to others. This is certainly one of my fears when it comes to overlanding solo. I to carry a weapon and never want to have to point it at anyone. It hurts to think there are folks out there who think this is ok to do to other people too. I mean seriously. WTF? I thought this was just going to be a scary story told, but seriously the gem of this whole video is talking about how you dealt with it, and came back to face it. Thank you so much for that. You nailed it on the head. My hope was that the title would initially make people think the encounter was the fear I faced. But when they watched it I hoped they’d come to realize that it was the return that was in fact the fear to be faced. I wanted to make something about the triumph not just the trauma. Oddly enough, when I was writing the concept I realized that to tell the story I wanted to tell I would actually have to face my fear and go deep into a painful place for me. My drive was to make a good video but I ended up actually healing in the process. You are the only person that has pointed that out in the comments. I’m so glad you noticed. ❤️

Crazy story. Glad you’re ok. That’s never happened to us on our trips but I always assume that it could. I view pistols and rifles as part of our overlanding kit- just like a shovel, and make it a point to have it in arms reach at all times. Oh my goodness. I mostly camp solo with my young son. I always think about getting stuck, lost, vehicle self recovery, what we’re eating and how we’re staying warm/cool- but I don’t ever think something like this would happen. Awesome story. Thank you for sharing. We just had, about 2 months ago, a group, 4-5 individuals, drunk in a camping area with 10-12 other families in dispersed camping around them. They were partying and started shooting in random directions in the camp ground. We contacted AZ state police and 2 sheriff’s offices to come out but no one came. Luckily we were strapped, packed up and left. We are on our own out there. Stay strong.

Thank you for sharing this story. I've been exploring the Ozarks for about 5-6yrs now, go down 3-4 times a year. Haven't had anything like this happen YET but chances are someday it will. I don't carry but have been considering it for awhile, not only for camping but I'm a Realtor and you never know who you'll encounter in vacant homes. This video might just give me the motivation to purchase and carry. Glad everything worked out for you and your family and I 100% see that you did what was best for your family, no 2nd guessing from here. So you spoke about how your TRAUMA seems less then others because we have may gone through something worse. I would like to touch on that. Your trauma is exactly that: Yours. I am fortunate enough to have made it through a deployment in Afghanistan, and yes it broke me. More then I cared to admit. However never diminish your pain and always have the fortitude to stand tall through your own trauma especially for your family. Your children have a worthy father in you for doing that. I have a new kiddo as well, and Overlanding has allowed me to heal from my PTSD from war in a way that I never anticipated and still learning through. Facing your fears has helped you grow and become a better individual, husband, and father. Keep it up. That being said, validating the experience has helped me to focus on my own healing. So I hear you. Thank you. Sometimes being given permission to voice what you feel helps you face it. Not sure why but that’s been my experience.

@@BakerOverland Fair everyone deals with it their own way. Just take piece of mind in knowing that "being given permission" may simply be someone saying: "Handle it when your ready and able." It's still on your own terms, but at the convenience of others basically confirming your not alone. If that makes sense. You essentially feel alone, albeit within the presence of others who may also feel alone, until they are around other like minded individuals. The darkness of trauma begins to have light shed on it when you confront it, either by a group or individually. Either way stay strong and keep pushing forward. 🤙🏻🇺🇸🏔️

Quite the story, there's some sketchy things in the Ozarks sometimes. Oddly enough our strangest encounter was in a State Park here in Arkansas. We've had people roll up on us numerous times and sometime spend an odd amount of time with their lights just shinning into our camp. It's definitely something to consider especially when you have your family with you. I hope this never happens again to any of us but we all need to be prepared as best we can.

I'm not a professional or anything, but I would not be surprised if one did diagnose you with PTSD. We have culturally associated it with extreme situation such as combat, but that doesn't delegitimize what you felt was real. Experiencing something your brain interprets as stressful and traumatic (especially as fear for your own children) does things to you and your brain chemistry that you sometimes can't even see for yourself. I think it's amazing how you overcame your own personal trauma and pushed forward and confronted it. I don't know if you have already, but even just talking to a professional about it might help still. Mental healthcare is healthcare. I hope you are doing well. All that said, this is an astoundingly produced video. I don't know your usual editing, but this looks like it was done by a team of experience professionals by a major network. Well done. Stay safe out there.

Wow! Loved the emotion, honesty and the connection to that fear through your well told story . I too occasionally camp far from help and know I would have to rely on myself to protect my loved ones. Not as easy or comfortable as it sounds. That would be a scary situation. Glad you are safe. I’ve been in hard and scary situations too. The scariest thing I experienced on trail was a young woman screaming and begging for help. It was bone chilling. Everyone heard it and we searched the area and reported it. Nothing was ever found. Another time while backpacking in Arizona I encountered a man who was completely naked. I was 10+ miles in from the trailhead in a wilderness area. He was so creepy 😂. Last story, I had a guy covered head to toe in blood come into our camp around 4 am. It turns out he was a backpacker who slipped and hit a sharp rock slicing open his leg. After administering first aid he hiked through the night to find help. I think it was adrenaline that kept him going. Anyway, I drove him to the hospital. But at first it was very uncomfortable and strange.

i think we as a people need to redefine trauma. even perceived small trauma to other people can really stick and scare others. we are only human im sure you kiddos being with you you went into fight or flight mode. thats real trauma bro its totally ok and im so proud of you for facing it!!!

I was thinking of how creepy that would be in that context. Probably a bit of PTSD because your kids were there. Video nicely shot and edited. This is a story that needed to be told. I hope your return to the scene helps. I was ambushed and shot in an urban setting. As soon as able I returned to the scene. One thing to consider is PTSD is real. At some point real professional help may be needed. As far as a weapon there's a lot to consider. You need to be sure you can take a life if you carry. If so you weapon should be hot to go and accessible. Your gun doesn't make you bullet proof. I had a weapon and never had the chance to use it. If you're not sure you can shoot someone consider bear spray or so other less lethal alternative. These were probably twisted people having "fun", you never know. I'm not sure that I wouldn't have been putting hot lead downrange in the same situation. Best of luck in your travels.

just a tip an unloaded hand gun is what we call a dead mans gun. that split second of loading a gun could be the very second you need. as long as you have a good holster you should be good to do that as long as you unload and clean it every so often. i understand probably why you didnt. im really proud of you for having the awareness to get away from the tent. definitely glad it didnt get worse!
