Part of what makes the assimilation process of The Thing so terrifying is that it's unclear how it works or if it needs to be the same process every time. It absorbs the dogs by exploding into a monster and enveloping them, but some of the researchers get taken quietly off screen and just show back up as monsters.

What's crazy is this story can only work in Antarctica. If The Thing landed anywhere else and a mosquito sucked blood from it, or it assimilates any other bug or bird, the world is DONE.

Ironically, The Thing cannot have actually occurred in Antarctica. Being on the south pole, Antarctica has a single day/night cycle per year. But The Thing starts during the day, most of the action happens during the night, and then ends as the sun rises - but it's clearly not meant to last for at least 3 months.

9:05 My personal theory on why the thing avoids long dead things is because the brain starts to decay very fast so any memories and fine motor function instructions are lost too quickly and it becomes sub optimal. The part that makes The Thing so terrifying to me is this idea that it copied memories so well, and reacted to knowing about a situation as much as pain/damage, that not even the infected people know they are infected unless the Thing is put into danger, at which point your whole body starts to come apart in the most horrifying way imaginable while you're just along for the ride..... * cold shiver *

I mean, cool idea, but that theory just completely dismantles the entire plot and movie. There is 0% chance of an imitation tricking itself into thinking it's still that person, only realising what it is when it gets exposed or put into a corner. How would it ever be able to plot, sabotage or sow doubt among the others while it's incognito, if it doesn't even know it's not that person? If you are using Windows panic as his blood is tested as evidence, that is actually because he WAS human but had no idea if he would even know what he actually was, sinc4e they had barely any idea how it worked. But, Blair couldn't build the A-G craft, blood couldn't have been sabotaged, Doggo wouldn't have assimilated Norris/Palmer (named both since its 50/50 and we don't know), etc. No, The Thing knows EXACTLY what it is as its walking around hidden and the person that was imitated has been long gone and is 100% dead.

Something that’s always creeped me out about The Thing is how it got to earth. Now, granted, it can build it’s own spaceship, so it’s not a completely mindless creature, but I always found the idea of this monster flying around in a UFO before it landed on earth to be an odd sight. You’d almost expect something this primitive and destructive to land on earth in a comet or something. But I’ve seen a theory that the spaceship it crash lands on isn’t even its, but a whole other crew that got assimilated by it, forcing a crash landing either to kill it or because the ship was in such bad shape it couldn’t fly. I just love the idea that The Thing isn’t the only alien in its universe but it’s such a hostile force that other aliens, ones more advanced than we are, are powerless to stop it and there’s a whole story that’s reached it’s end when the movie starts, The Thing successfully killing a whole ship of other aliens. It opens up the door for so many questions that are frankly terrifying to think about!
@brianyaeger8209
@brianyaeger8209 2 жыл бұрын
I’m the prequel, when they go onto the ship and see a pixelated column on the bridge of the ship Originally that was a alien who had hung itself (and maybe purposely crashed the ship) and thus, it wasn’t The Thing’s ship But someone decided to pixilate over it for some stupid reason

@RobThePuppet Amalgamated Dynamics created a pilot alien for the 2011 prequel, but in the end it was dropped from the movie if I'm not wrong (haven't seen the prequel and don't intend to watch it). But in my opinion the wobbly flight of the spaceship in the opening credits of the original strongly implies that something bad is happening on board. So I'm leaning towards the theory that the ship isn't the Thing's own.

There was also a 1951 film titled "The Thing from Another World", inspired by that novella, but that differs greatly from the Carpenter version and doesn't feature a shape shifting creature. The loose plot (discovered under ice, brought back as a block then thawed accidently) of the 1951 film was used in the 2011 prequel, and also referenced in Carpenter film when they visit the Norwegian base.

The Thing (1982) is also a sequel to The Thing from Another World (1951) where The Thing is played by James "Zeb Macahan" Arness. The Thing was intended to be a shapeshifter, like in the original novel "Who goes there?" by John W. Campbell Jr., but the low budget and technology at the time didn't allow it and instead it is a very loose adaptation. It's in no way a masterpiece, but that movie along with its sequels are watched by the winter skeleton crew on the South Pole Telescope station every winter, starting shortly after the final plane for the season has departed.

the thing terrifies me because, contrary to a lot of other sci-fi horror monsters, I can't think of a way to beat it that isn't "be lucky as fuck". the lucky part here is that the Thing landed in the antarctic, so it could be killed before it can spread. if it landed somewhere with readily available biomass, let's say *literally any other continent*, Earth's biomass would have been completely assimilated in a week flat. maybe less. with absolutely no way to stop it. except maybe a high-yield nuke to the face just before it makes contacts with the ground.

This is why the Thing doesn't need to rush to take over. It's presence anywhere other than Antarctica would be an instant doomsday event for the world, but it could bide its time and spread before anyone even knew what was going on. There would literally be no way to stop it.

i personally subscribe to the theory that given that (aside from a prequel comic to the prequel movie) The prequel is The Things first contact with humanity and how as you said we know SO little about The Thing. It's clumsiness and more movie monster way of working in the prequel is because this is it's first contact with this species along with the fact that I was frozen in a block of ice for thousands of years and it's learned from it's first encounter so LIKE AT THE END of the prequel where it learned "Oh they're suspicious if I'm missing recognizable markings put in the guy survivor's earring (but on the wrong ear) it would then put in earrings still like at the end of the film.

This video got me thinking, maybe the reason The Thing doesn't assimilate dead bodies, and why it can't infect everyone by just sneezing on them, is it's actually vulnerable to bacteria and other microscopic organisms itself, maybe it doesn't actually have the same deadly capabilities on a micro scale it does at macro. It could be The Thing is only able to take over and attack the cells of a multicellular organism that have no means of directly defending themselves, and is in fact bad at attacking other microscopic organisms that do have any means of attack or defense, and will even lose and be hunted by most micro organisms on a one to one basis, making The Thing just like any other organism at a micro scale. This could be why it needs to infect and gain biomass, as a fortress to defend itself, using the immune systems and defenses only available to multicellular organisms to have a way to kill off it's micro predators. So the reason it doesn't assimilate long dead bodies, is other microscopic organisms that infect the corpse kill it off too fast for it to gain ground, why burning a Thing is enough to kill it off, because any of The Thing left is so exposed it is killed off by infection. Then finally why it can't just infect everyone by sweating everywhere, or even imitating bacteria and spreading like a common cold, is it just simply can't survive alone against other microorganism.

The Thing is just one of those creatures that’s truly a Lovecraftian horror. Friends of mine we tossed out names of other aliens from other franchises like Aliens, Predator, Calvin, with the possible exception being the blob most species would end up getting assimilated or infected by a cell from the Thing and slowly be turned into one. I think where the Blob would have an edge is it consumes the biomass but there’s that possibility of could it infect it and spread or does it get neutralized.

Why would it need to build a space ship to get around Earth? If it wanted to infect Earth, it *had* a helicopter, and I'm almost positive it assimilated a pilot (or a person with enough rudimentary information that this alien creature, that can build _and fly_ an alien space craft, could use) for it to know when and how to take off. No, you build a space ship to go into space. Like it had a job to do, and crashing on Earth wasn't that job, so now it's awake and needs to complete something which isn't happening on Earth...

I absolutely love 'The Thing'. It's not only my favourite horror film, but probably my favourite film full stop. As everyone knows the special effects are fantastic. But what really makes the film so great, is the way it builds up the tension. When it comes to the prequel, it really annoys me that they initially did it all with practical effects, which looked great by the way. But then the studio decided to replace them all with CGI instead. What makes it even worse though, is that they didn't tell the guys who did the practical effects, Amalgamated Dynamics. So, they only found out when they went to the premier of the film. Understandably this really annoyed them and they subsequently ending up making their own film 'Harbinger Down' which was funded by a Kickstarter campaign.

the thing is is that The Thing is an unstoppable thing that absorbs anything it comes across and assimilate it into The Thing or another Thing and is from one of the iconic things in film history The Thing not to be confused with the shitty prequel The Thing

The Palmer-Thing was actually trying to kill the Norris-Thing and the little head that popped off. Or he may have been infected later but that just blew my mind watching it. Oh, and apparently it is canon the Things know they're Things. It insinuates in the novelization and by John Carpenter and Stuart Cohen. I was hoping that wasn't the case. That would've been more fun.

Pedantic mode on: technically John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a remake, of a 1950's Book adaptation. But Carpenter's version is above and beyond the original, a bit like 1978's Invasion of the Body Snatchers is above and beryond the original and the book that inspired it

Part of me wonders what the home planet/environment or the food chain is like for The Thing to evolve with this desperate need to survive and so many methods of doing so. Hmm... what would make a for a great Alien (xenomorph) cross over. The Thing's whole thing is stealth and disguise at a molecular level. Something that would be great at avoiding xenomorphs that can kill with acid.

In my opinion we almost definitely didn't see the original form of the thing because we see it crash land on the planet but I don't think it was the thing driving that saucer. I think it took over whatever alien was driving the ship and that's what we see frozen in ice and eventually part of that big glob of mess at the end of the movie.

You see the bottom half of its true form in the prequel as it bursts up into a ceiling. It's like 3 huge black talkn-like legs. The pilot of the ship crashed when his prisoner/cargo escaped. 'The Thing' is known by some fans from the original story Frozen Hell (later 'Who Goes There?) as 'The Chimera' due to its ability to mimic lifeforms even though it doesn't really do it in the source material. The Chimera/Thing is seen, in an apocryphal sense, as not an organism per-se but as 'the black goo/accelerant' from the Ridleyverse (Prometheus, Alien) and the X Files. The original 50s film (The Thing from another planet) is fantastic, way ahead of its time, and is really, really tense. It's a shame that the monster in the 50s film is rubbish.

What I don't like about The Thing is how arbitrarily the "single cell" either can or can't assimilate you. Just a single drop of blood on your skin can turn you, except when it doesn't because there's no way some of it didn't drip on Macready during the blood test. And if it lands on a glove or piece of clothing you're still carrying that single cell forever on you until you end up touching it.
@ninjaoclock3865
@ninjaoclock3865 2 жыл бұрын
I always assumed they meant a single cell could theoretically assimilate someone but it was pretty much impossible because of our body's Natural defenses that and it would take so long it's pretty much useless anyway to really be effective it would need enough to overcome someones immune system and to happen in a reasonable amount of time it might as well just full on absorb it like the dog

One thing I find kind of interesting is how influential the Thing is. For example, Jenova in Final Fantasy VII is basically the Thing. We find this out when the party looks over the notes left behind by Aerith's parents. What's kind of sad is that they hijacked the Thing and didn't do much with it aside from note that it was an absolute problem in the past.

What's also interesting is that we don't know how the thing got here, and it's brought up in the video, we don't know why it assimilates, what is it's larger goal? And if it was building a space ship what for? If its goal is to be the last surviving thing then wouldn't it stay on earth? If does intend on staying on earth why a space ship and why so soon? Or is it just trying to leave and survive and live among the stars?
