So happy to see this finally on KZbin! I saw it in high school in the 80s and remember being blown away! So it was funny that many years later it turned out that my husband was friends with Rick Hauser, the director of this film. I got to work with Rick a little on a project that my husband was also part of, and RIck gave me his gently used Martha Stewart cookbook as a gift. I still have it and use it! I was very sad to hear that Rick passed away rather quickly from cancer a couple of years ago. A very talented man who should be proud of his part in this film creation. The best version of the book I've seen.

Meg Foster’s eyes were so mesmerizing when I saw this in high school.

The best adaptation ever done of this book, especially ideal in its casting. Foster and Heard are definitive. The cheap video look makes it more accessible IMO. It makes it look like something that could happen in front of you. I like this A LOT. I remember when it was broadcast originally, not long after the BBC's COUNT DRACULA with a similar look(and effects), and as a kid my mind grouped them.

Just wonderful! I've been looking for this forever and it far from disappoints. This and the BBC's THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS from the 1970s are superior adaptations

This is pretty stunning. Thank you SO much for posting this, including the PBS logo and made possible by ads! I couldn't believe this when I first saw it on PBS. How they could have perfectly cast "The Scarlet Letter" with Meg Foster as Hester, John Heard as Rev. Dimsdale and Kevin Conway as Roger Chillingworth is amazing.

This is the best and truest version of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel. That 1995 travesty starring Demi Moore was so bad and off the wall that I couldn't finish watching it! Don't bother with that one if you want to see a masterpiece. Stick with this version. So well acted and so well done! Thank you for uploading it onto KZbin! I have the dvd but the conversation is so quiet that I can't hear it very well. No captioning on the dvd.

Agree!! And I recall reading a review of the 1995 movie. The critic kept excoriating Hawthorn's writing. Proved the critic never read the book. The only miscast in this one is: Hester was described as having dark brown eyes. 😊

I remember this version from school. I've read the book as well. There isn't much great about Chillingworth, but at least he won't take out vengeance on an innocent child. He makes it quite clear in the book that he will not avenge himself on Pearl.
