Of course I read this in high school as probably everybody else in America did. Now, many decades later, I appreciate the message and the story so much more. I am listening to this as I just read an article published in 8/31/21 in The Atlantic Magazine called 'The New Puritans' written by Anne Applebaum. Chilling. Do read the article and then listen to this novel.

Genuinely wondering if the writing is similar to the way people might have spoke in the 1850's, or if writers always felt the need to cram paragraphs of undefined b.s into a book. Then sprinkle some sentences of actual plot somewhere in the mix.

The English in this is more Victorian, I think. For reference, Shakespeare (1500s) was Early Modern English, and we can sort of understand it. But old english (500s-1200s) would need translation--Like Beowulf. It would sound more like german and look something like, "Hwæt. We Gardena in geardagum, þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon, hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon..." (I just copy pasted that I have no clue what it says.)

Christ, early American literature sucks. It's full of colonialism, slavery apologetics, sexist tropes and it is so boring just in general. I can only really stand Fredrick Douglass. He's cool. The audiobook almost convinces me that I'm listening to something cool but then I stop and wait a minute and realize that it's exactly the sort of thing that tragically turns people away from books, sadly.
