Loved the film when I watched it years ago and still love it now. I disagree with Mui and Khong (I think that’s his name) relationship being ambiguous. In the beginning she had a crush on him and he became infatuated with her. It wasn’t a tutor relationship. He taught her how to read and write to prepare her for her future role. She’s pregnant in the end and dressed in very fine expensive clothing. Given the culture that implies they are married. Vietnamese society isn’t like America; Mui is not a “baby mama”. The film doesn’t have to explicit say they are now married. One of my favorite films of all time!

This movie came out around the same time as another excellent film about Vietnam, “HEAVEN & EARTH,” that not a lot of people saw but have since gotten more recognition. I think HEAVEN & EARTH is amazing, from a director who actually went to Vietnam.
