Sandwiches of History

Күн бұрын

Today, we’re taking on another sandwich of regional history. This time we’re headed to Philadelphia for a sandwich created at McNally’s, The Schmitter. Apparently it was created for a gentleman who sat at the bar and only drank Schmidt’s beer. Never mind that his name was Dennis Krenich. Alas, the sandwich would not be named for him but it lives on to this day. It has a particular set of ingredients and a particular way of cooking them which, after making the sandwich, I get. Oh and it is messy. But in a very good way. If you’re keen to give this a go, I used this recipe: www.saveur.com/article/Recipe...

We love our Schmitters at Mcnallys! 30 years ago I was a vegan, then became pregnant with our first and I wanted some MEAT! In Philly’s Sunday paper “The Inquirer” was a magazine section that we’d pull out and read first. The very last page always had restaurant reviews and one Sunday morning, whilst feeling quite big and peckish, I read Mcnallys review and the rest is history. We still eat them, though now only a few times a year. Mostly, so we can live to meet our grandchildren!

"Mess"? you were swimming in that. Definitely a "rubber glove sandwich" and it would go well with a quart or two of straight forward American beer. You ate it and I need the nap, Bravo.

The bread is more of a garnish than structure in this sandwich. I know this is controversial in sandwichland, but I would fork and knife this one.

When Citizens Bank Park first opened they sold a Schmidter (named after the Phillies’ Hall of Fame third baseman) that used steak sandwich in place of the roast beef. It hasn’t been around for a long time now and I miss it!

That was actually the Schmitter from McNally's. They had a McNally's employee overseeing the Aramark employees, which is why it went away. The union Aramark employees filed a grievance.

After enjoying your video I had to go look into this more. Found a video done at NcNally's. They were talking about the history and showed how they made it. Her version of the history involved a worker from the local hospital (might be the cleaned-up version). The sauce on the sandwich only put in the middle. When it's shown cut it looks like a lot of sauce but is not. Also, their salami was large like bologna size. The short of it is - you need to revisit this one. Yum!

All right, so I think the one place you went wrong on was using ALL of the sauce at once. I believe (and I'm mostly flying on bullshit and by golly), that the idea was to save some of that sauce for another sandwich, either for your table-mate, or yourself at another meal. I'm going to try it with just a spoonful or so of the sauce.
