okay, sorry, this is going to be a longer comment. Euphy was naive enough to think that giving a small land will make it better, when in reality it would be an easier way to suppress japanese people into a smaller area. it declares that just like britania took their land from them, they can "gift" a little part of it, it solidifies britanian power if anything. japanese people get stripped of chance to fight for making things on their terms and reclaiming their land, because now you will have a brainwashed population on both sides who say "well there's this area, why not just move there?". it's not the government "approving" as Carson said, it's the oppressor laughing in the oppressed faces by giving them breadcrumbs. if Zero succeeds, they're able to reclaim their land and rule it, when it's "given" by the oppressor, the japanese still have no power. it's why Zero is so infuriated by that declaration - Euphy is unintentionally being ignorant. it's a genuine effort on her part, but what it signifies is an insult to the oppressed side. and that's the whole thing about her character - an infuratingly ignorant person who acts nice and maybe is nice, but all they do is just end up making more problems a lot of the times. she isn't actually trying to make a world a better place but rather make her surroundings a better place, so it only ever could benefit her and those close to her. at the same time you can't hate her because her ignorance comes from a place of being raised like this, she only started seeing reality when she moved to japan. maybe if she was given more time and a less idealistic person than suzaku by her side, she would change, but alas

a direct parallel could be reservations for Native Americans, they were given strips to be "Native" in, but those treaties were broken so often at the whim of colonial powers.

I don't know if I would call her ignorant, more idealistically naive. The Japanese want their land and rights back, so she says, lets give them those back without understanding the repercussions and that it is a little more complicated process than that.

Yeah, the clue to the viewers that it isn't actually a good thing for the Japanese is that she gets the go ahead from the higher ups.

@@AddMiller221 To be fair, Schinzel is a little difficulty to read at this point. You could say that he really is this kind person based on what we've seen so far. He literally overlooked a great deal of insubordination with Suzaku and even Cecil (when she questioned him a few episodes ago). And he doesn't seem to mind Lloyd. He does say in one of the next few episodes that this will stabilize the situation in Area 11. Which should give some insight as to what he truly wants. He doesn't care about the Japanese. He's just trying to minimize a problem in this one area so that he can focus on "more important things". From his point of view, he can give this small concession to increase the stability and efficiency of this country while undermining the active rebellion. It's a minimal cost for a maximum profit.

The reason why lelouch opposes Euphy's plan is because it goes against his goals. Remember, Lelouch has 2 goals: creating a better world FOR NUNNALLY and finding out who murdered his mother. The "I will obliterate Britannia" for Nunnally's sake, not for the Japanese. The Japanese are a means to an end, and while he doesn't mind liberating them they are not the primary reason for his rebellion. He started his rebellion so he could draw out his father Charles, force a confrontation and geass him to learn the truth about Marianne's death. Euphy's proposal not only goes against his goal of starting a rebellion to create an opening to get to Charles, but it also threatens the very existence of the Black Knights. Some of them will accept while others will refuse. They will likely be torn apart into opposing factions and possibly end up fighting each other. This is what happened in the real world in Ireland which was still part of the UK at the start of the 20th century. The UK was weakened and exhausted after WWI and couldn't crush the Irish rebellion so they proposed that part of Ireland would become independent while Northern Ireland would stay part of the UK. The Irish rebels split into 2 factions, those who believed they'd never get a better deal and those who wanted the whole island. The leaders of the rebellion accepted the deal and the Irish Republic was born and immediately fell prey to a civil war between the opposing factions and the leaders who accepted the deal even ended up being assassinated because some saw them as traitors to the cause.

There is a good movie about the history of those leaders in Ireland called Michael Collins, starring Liam Neeson as titular character who was a leader in the IRA.

Glad you connected all the dots with Ganymede. Took me several watch throughs to get all that. This also explains why Lelouch has basic pilot skills since episode 1. There a lot of just under the surface details like that in this anime.

The reason leoluch never uses anyone to be loyal soldiers through Geass is because he wants people to follow him through their own heart. That will give more better results than mindless slaves. He states this in one of the future episodes.

I'd like to point out that everyone from the Royal family, and their guards and subordinates think that Lelouch and Nunally are dead, so I think they'd think of something else before thinking it's the dead Princess

A real royal family even more well known for incest is the Hapsburgs (ruled the austro-hungarian empire and spain i think). It resulted in a weird physical feature beimg passed onto descendants called the hapsburg chin (an overly pronounced chin due to inbreeding).

I would say that while this could be a step in the right direction, there is a massive difference between one specially administrated zone within Japan where Britannia allows the Japanese to have rights and making an independent nation which is what the goal of the Black Knights is.

Months old and we're well past this. But Lelouch's goal was destruction and death, Euphemia's was about life and changing the quality of life. However narratively their positions are flipped, Lelouch is typically the evil emperor, and Euphie the Princess or Hot Rebel girl that goes along with the hero, but for Code Geass Lelouch is the rebel, and Euphie is part of the evil Empire. Which honestly is part of why I loved season 1 of Code Geass so much. Because it gave a layer of depth, and did the flip genuinely rather than just flipping roles just to do so.
