The Social Network winning Best Original Score is one the Academy's most embarrassing decisions. The award is clearly called "Best Original Score", not "Most Popular Score Fad of the Last Quarter of the Year". Was The Social Network the best score of 2010? That over HTTYD, Deathly Hallows Part 1, Inception, The Last Airbender, Narnia 3, etc. ?

I think Hans Zimmer scored most of the Spidey/Peter and Gwen part. Where as the Magnificent six scored Electro. Other musicians either had their own songs (Pharell Williams) or played for the score (Johnny Marr)
@Mr.ditkovich062 жыл бұрын
When you’re thinking about making a movie and you want something powerful in there that it’s in your mind but you can’t express it cause it’s really hard to explain, Hans Zimmer is the man who does it for you playing it like if the music was talking everything you have thought in your head but better and there’s no mistakes in there, it’s just everything you wanted to hear even if u didn’t have any idea of what u wanted to hear, his music makes you feel like that’s everything you wanted to hear even if u never knew u had that hidden feeling, it comes out just like that. There’s this meme that says: The Guy who says the joke… and the guy who says the joke but louder. And with that, I use it as an example of a director and a music composer. The director is the guy who says the joke and the music composer is the guy who says the joke but louder. The director has a thought that can’t express it with words but Hans Zimmer knows what you’re thinking and reveals everything you want but better with just a simply piece of melody. Hans Zimmer is the guy who says the joke but louder.

The only problem with Zimmer's score is that so many other composers try to sound like him these day. At least back in the day you had Carpenter, Goldsmith, Danny Elfman etc.
@rhythmoriented6 жыл бұрын
Jw Nj great point. However, the likes of Trent Reznor (The Social Network, Gone Girl) and Cliff Martinez (including Drive, The Neon Demon) have taken electronic scores in different directions fortunately.
@jwnj97166 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I mean Danny Elfman has a weakness even he admitted in the Frighteners documentary, so many of his soundtracks sound the same, you cant tell at times from which movie it is. Even Alan Silvestri's Judgment Night at times sounds like Predator 2. We have guys like Harry Gregson-Williams, Daniel Licht and off course Akira Yamaoka. Plus the legend Bernard Herrmann, so great that even in Star Wars they used a small part of Psycho.
@eggsybenedict70146 жыл бұрын
There are also a lot of composers who don't imitate Zimmer. It's just that most of their works are forgettable. Remember the soundtrack of The Shape of Water by Alexandre Desplat? I don't either, but it won this year's Oscar (over Phantom Thread and Dunkirk, which I still find hard to believe).
@rhythmoriented6 жыл бұрын
Eggsy Benedict good point, but wrong example. The scores to Up, Finding Neverland, Atonement, Babel and others (all good films) were forgettable. The Shape of Water was a brilliantly composed work, which created (musically) a fluid feel that characterized water itself, made use of flute to embody lead character Eliza, employed Desplat’s only whistling, and accentuated the aesthetic beauty of the film without stepping on it. It was even used in tandem with a Cirque du Solei performance for the stunning opening to this year’s BAFTA’s.
@eggsybenedict70146 жыл бұрын
rhythmoriented Something can be finely crafted and forgettable at the same time. At least it was forgettable for me; I remember nothing about the music after watching the film. One can argue about the functions of soundtracks and whether they are supposed to be noticed, but that's beside the point.

He can make me sit at the edge of my sit during the most boring scenes, he can free my emotions and his scores take my mind from daily life and remind me that there is something bigger and greater. He is the greatest for me, cause even if some of his soundtracks tend to sound familiar, they always make the movie 100% better and more recognizable. By that I don’t mean his scores don’t wary. Zimmer can make the most unique pieces but also so familiar and like home because you can hear his ideas and soul in them
@RohannvanRensburg6 жыл бұрын
"He isn’t really interested in making us feel something, rather, he’s more concerned with opening a new world and allowing us to enter it through his music. Instead of offering emotional cues, Zimmer’s music conveys subtext, things that a filmmaker can’t communicate visually. This allows us to establish our own emotional experience of the movie" If you study the work of Romantic and prolific Hollywood composers, their desire isn't to plod along and simply deliver emotions that are showing up on screen. What they tend to be able to do far better is actually tell a story with the music that can be understood without listening to the film, and this is the antithesis of modern film scoring. One eventually gets tired of four chords and sound design that characterizes modern blockbusters, in favour of longer form.

From Wikipedia. Numerous film music critics have accused Zimmer and his studio of being responsible for a supposed degradation in mainstream film score production. Christian Clemmensen of Filmtracks frequently criticizes Zimmer's constant use of ghostwriters and writing music using a "lowest common denominator" approach. James Southall of Movie-Wave commented, "Zimmer’s way of writing scores goes pretty much like this - he comes up with some “ideas” at an early stage, these ideas are then turned into a suite of music (sometimes with the assistance of Lorne Balfe), and when the actual scoring begins, the film is split into chunks and each chunk gets allocated to a team at Remote Control, who take music from the suite and apply it to their scenes

Bare Island, specially written for Mission: Impossible-2. You may not like this questionable movie, but i bet you will agree that Zimmer made his part on it as good as for the others. The composition starts to play a couple of minutes before that one special reveal-moment happens, and when it "collides face to face" with that scene itself - fits it brilliantly. It may be not the best reveal scene in cinematography, but Zimmer turns it to be the most rememorable by every second of this track. P.S. And about Zimmer himself: i can clearly see, that this man is someone tangibly superior than just usuall professionals of music-writining. It's good to have such people on the planet.
