I'm looking at the ESEE-5 and ESEE-6, correct me if I'm wrong but the ESEE-6 is actually the larger of the two while you say that the it is more practical than the ESEE-5. I'm just wondering if you misspoke or if I'm missing something? Were you referring to weight and blade thickness rather than blade length?

SignedSign I have a sawyer mini filter. They are rated to 0.1 micron absolute, weigh 2 ounces, and filters up to 100,000 gallons (or 378 500 liters). They cost about $22. You don't have to wait to drink, it doesn't taste like chemicals and you can drink straight from the source or a container. If you don't have a container steri-tabs are useless. He says he'd use his shelter - what if you need that set up to not go down with hypothermia. They are also notoriously thin and rip easily. Once again the Sawyer comes with a fold up water bottle that takes up virtually no space. In this case you could put the Mylar shelter inside a large zip lock bag and there you go ;-) I don't understand why he'd have the pouch protruding off the knife rather than just have it separate on his belt? I can also see that pen getting broken, clogged with dirt or even ripped off going through foliage etc. Space is taken up in the pouch by kit that could easily go in your pockets - pen, notebook, flash light and compass. I have a small, slimline pouch on my knife for a sharpening stone. It has a ferro rod on the side. In a pouch, not much larger than the one he has on the knife I have a comprehensive survival tin covering on far more than what is in the pouch on the video (signalling, medical, mini-multi-tool, mini compass and light, fishing etc as well as fire). In the same pouch is 20 yards of 550 cord, a sling shot rubber, a panel marker and a sawyer filter with fold-up container. Of course the third item on my belt after sheath knife and survival pouch is a 40oz steel water bottle with steel cup. Like I said above a folder, torch, compass, pen/notebook are in my pockets. Anything is better than nothing but I see better use of a pouch. You can carry far more in a similar sized pouch (mine was a Max M1 but it was too thick so I changed to a more streamlined standard molle utility zip pouch. It is a little taller but not as thick) and is more ergonomic than what is - or more importantly what isn't - in this kit.
@SignedSign9 жыл бұрын
***** its a small survival pack, used if you loose the rest of your pack, and in your regular pack is where you would be carry a proper water filtration unit, this kit is for when you loose your regular pack and have to rely on a small kit that you always carry on your person at all times, and due to the fact that it has to be small and lightweight there is no room for a water filter unit, but you have to rely on more primitive methods, like pre filter water with a paper coffee filter and then boil it in a folded aluminum foil or simular, its lightweight and takes no room at all so you can always carry it at all times if you ever need to use it. Aka its a survival pack and not a go camping pack. Personally in my regular pack I got a small lightweight water distillation unit combined with a stainless bottle that even can purify salty sea water to drinkable water (living in the archipelago that's what I personally need as most of the time sea water is the only water source as the puddles on the islands usually are murky and stinky), but that is also for a regular pack and not for a tiny survival pack. Best thing with a water distillation unit is that not only does it filter out particles including salt and all germs and viruses etc, but it also remove / reduce chemicals and even removes radioactivity from the water. Downer is that it also removes all minerals and vitamins from the water, but that doesn't matter much seen as water only gives us about 5% of what we need, the rest comes from the food we eat, so those 5% we can be without

Just a few small observations, If you replaced the three wet fires with three tinder quick's you would save space and be more streamlined, also, if you lost the he3ad lamp and moved to for example a fenix flashlight that runs off a single AA Battery you would also save some space, also switching to a fire steel rod ie light my fire arm edition, you would save some space in your kit, just because I have been working to lighten my loads, I am sure that is something everyone wants to do.

Congrats on the addition to your family. ESEE-5 I have the ESEE-5 and I highly recommend it. I've taken it on many trips including backpacking through Alaska. My friend has the ESEE-6 which is also a great knife, it's longer so it splits big wood better but it's thinner so mine splits stubborn wood better. Not certain there is a clear winner but the ESEE-5 is a very valid option. Headlamp A great option for size is the Petzl eLite. I carry these in my similar kit and find them plenty good enough for the role and they take much less space...

To be honest, this kit is quite good. The only item I'd suggest as an addition would be a collapsible/plastic 1- liter container for use as a water container. Other than this single item, your kit is ideal. Low weight. The knife is fine. But you'd never want to use your mylar sheeting unless absolutely necessary. It can be a matter of life and death in both frigid and desert environments.

First, congrats on the addition to your family. Second, this is a nice little kit, but I do have a few suggestions for possible additions to the kit. I understand that you have a separate med kit, but if you were to include a small packet of anti-biotic ointment (which is also a fire accellerant) and some duct tape you would be covered for any fair-sized cuts. The tape also has a million other uses. You could add some dental floss which is extremely strong and also has a ton of uses. These items are all very small and weigh practically nothing. I think it would give you a bunch more functionality pretty easily. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for the upload. Peace.

Have you had good luck with WetFire? I've opened one several times to find it dead/not usable. They don't seem to be very robust. I don't know if the chemicals inside are volatile or the packaging not robust enough but I'll never trust my life to the stuff. I'm not sure if you've actually used the cheap survival blanket or just carried it, but in my experience they don't do much. It will keep you dry, work as a ground cloth, etc. But not too practical for warmth. Cool kit though. I like that Maxpedition Anemone pack!
@OnPointPreparedness9 жыл бұрын
Rob Babcock I've had my wetfire's for 6 months and have tried them out periodically. Never had a problem. Might be a bad batch that you got. For the survival blanket, it is used as you say: rain/wind shelter, heat reflection for more fire warmth, and a ground cloth. Definitely will not keep you warm unless you have added insulation.

Good concepts and I like the idea of having a small kit outside of the pack but I see a few holes if you actually have to use it. Using your mylar blanket as your primary water container carries a lot of risk. The plastic mylar is very thin and will rip easily leaving you without a shelter or container. Put your whole kit in a gallon ziplock and it will keep your tinder dry and offer a more mobile and reliable water container. For sharpening, you can use the eze-lap sharpener and save a lot of space, or if you frequent ares with a lot of shale or similar sedimentary rock, learn to use a smooth river stone to touch up your blade. The tikka is not a waterproof headlamp so protecting it from rain would also be a good idea. If you know how to use your compass and you're comfortable with it it may be a valuable tool for you. Congrats on the new addition to your family. I hope you and your new son get a chance to go out and try out the parts of your kit and see what works specifically for you in the areas you explore.

It's a nice kit, a little bulky if you keep it as a unit, what I carry as a backup while out and about is slightly wider pouch yet flatter pouch (Highlander belt pouch from Ebay ), which I carry a couple of silver blankets, thick orange bin liner, a small foldaway hooded poncho, a sheet of tin foil, a couple of sandwich bags, a bandana, wire saw, whistle and compass combo, fire-steel with a bit of fat wood, some other tinder like cotton wool balls, a couple of blocks of hexamine, and a AAA Maglite. If everything is folded flat, the pouch sits nicely on the flat of my back very comfortably, also on my belt I carry a multi-tool pouch with my Leatherman sidekick, or a Swiss army knife, the last pouch is a small TAS fold away MOLLE dump pouch with a folded up 500ml plastic water bottle inside, folded away it's so small and compact, that I forget it's there, once I have found a water source the pouch unfolds for the full water bottle. I did use to carry a full on plastic water bottle with nesting cup on my belt but it got in the way. My belt is made out of 5-50 para cord, as well is my watch strap with a para cord bangle on the other wrist, more than enough para cord to construct a simple A-Frame if I do infact find myself in a situation without my pack.
@asafc52509 жыл бұрын
Also rather than putting in a military compass (which takes up a lot of space in the pouch itself) put in a silva compass so you can put in 1 litre bag to collect water rather than using a survival blanket. also what about first aid. I would put some band aids and some antiseptic whips. furthermore put in some duct tape. Seems logical to me
