Wrestling Bios Presents - The Scrapped Kane vs Kane WWE Storyline
In 2006, the WWE promoted "See No Evil" on their weekly television shows. See No Evil was a movie produced by WWE Studios starring Kane, the WWE's very own Big Red Machine. The film would be released on May 19th 2006, and the WWE decided to present a storyline on WWE shows where the date "May 19th" would play a huge role. The storyline itself was used to promote Kane's new movie, but the May 19th date would also hold some significance to the actual Kane character.
While Kane has been involved in some of wrestling's most prolific (and outlandish) storylines, the angle that centered around May 19th and the "Imposter Kane" is maybe a storyline that the WWE would like you to forget. Kane would come face to face with an past version of himself, the imposter wore Kane's original mask and his mannerisms were very similar to those of the Big Red Machine. Wrestling fans, however, weren't too enamoured with the Kane vs Imposter Kane storyline and match, and the WWE decided to completely erase the angle and pretend like it never happened.
This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at the Kane vs Kane "May 19th" storyline of 2006. Topics covered include:
00:00 - Kane and The Big Show dominate the Tag Team division
04:15 - Kane's obsession with May 19th
09:25 - Imposter Kane makes his debut
12:39 - Kane vs Imposter Kane at Vengeance 2006
14:27 - What was planned for Imposter Kane?
- Much More!

They could have gone with like he was just a fanboy and getting rid of him "comical" way and done, but the fact that they played it seriously after the dollar store costume was stupid and even more considering it was to promote a release date that already passed

I thought the original Kane mask had the wig built in. Either way, they definitely could have found one that looked more like the original hair or had it made for them. That was a budget decision by the looks of it 😂

It was one of those moments where it looked good on paper but impossible to properly convey in the wrestling world. I remember scratching my head and wondering where this story was heading at the time.

Kane vs imposter Kane was a great idea on paper but the execution was pretty poor, it would have been more interesting if Kane was still masked and they brought in another big guy dressed up in the classic masked attire which would have made it even more harder to tell who was the real one. The build up and mind games was excellent but the match itself at Vengeance 06 was boring and the way the angle ended with the imposter being thrown out of the arena was disappointing. I thought when Kane got his mask back and disappeared shortly after, he was going to come back with a new mask and attire but sadly he didn't. Thanks for uploading this and keep up the good work

The idea of the imposter Kane being the real Kane could have worked if done right. When Kane returned in August of 2002 with the new mask he had a much smaller appearance from his tricep tears. This would have been a logical point for the real Kane to be imprisoned. In 2003 Stone Cold cut a promo on Kane where he asked what happened to the old tougher version of Kane he even said at one point "does that son of a bitch still breathe?" That could have been worked in to the angle as well. To pull it off they would have had to used someone bigger then Luke Gallows. I personally hate the idea of anyone other then Glen Jacobs portraying Kane but that's how it could have worked.

Now this storyline has always intrigued me for multiple reasons. 1. It's interesting to think Kane thought about retiring 14 years ago, considering he continued wrestling for far longer than he initially planned. 2. The idea of 1998 Kane being portrayed by Luke Gallows is an odd thing. Though it sorta makes sense since both men are tall and muscular

I maybe alone on this one, but in 2006 this storyline caught my interest. It was the coolest thing on RAW at the time. I wanted to see classic Kane return and say that when he was injured in '02 the new Kane took his place. Then he destroys the makless Kane and the original character reclaims his main event status... That actually had me hooked back then. I mean, it's not like they wouldn't have screwed it up by feeding him to Cena soon after anyway, but that was around the time WWE was becoming very hit and miss. So my expectations for this feud actually had me paying attention every week.

I was so hyped when I saw this story ar first, very disappointing to see it end like that. If you ask me, I think one of the reasons it failed was Gallows himself. Dont get me wrong, I like the guy, i think hes a great talent, loved his work as Festus especially, but I think they chose the wrong guy to portray Kane. Appearance wise, think he was a bit shorter and not as bulked up to fit the classic Kane appearance. Looking back at that period, one of the guys that could ve fit the classic Kane look wouldve been Matt Morgan. I think he wasnt in TNA yet by that time and he was in WWE before, so maybe they couldve given him another chance with this Kane storyline.

Did the writers read the Spider-man Clone Saga for this? Their intentions of making the real Kane the imposter and Imposter Kane the real one so the real Kane can retire is EXACTLY what the writers wanted to do with Peter Parker and his clone, Ben Reilly. Except the Clone saga ended up with the exact opposite mess- Ben was actually pretty popular with fans so the Clone Saga was stretched out from a planned 6 months to 3 years and it resulted in a disastrous mess that didn't make any sense whatsoever, ending with Ben finally dying and revealed to have been the clone all along. In 2016 they actually revived Ben and the Saga was renewed, but that, thankfully, only lasted three months.

The message board I was on at the time called Gallows' character "Kake", as in the Fake Kane.

The word "decimate" means to destroy or dispose of one tenth. If there were ten men in the ring, Kane decimating them would mean he choke slammed one of them.

During this time I briefly couldn't watch WWE so I missed this and WM22. I heard about doppelganger Kane and it all seemed so ridiculous and bizarre for that era which felt more sports-oriented. That kind of silly story could have only worked in the Attitude era.

I actually was enjoying the Kane vs Kane story. But im also a big Kane fan so I enjoy all the stories. Other than Katie Vick of course.

I remember this. I figured it was when the funeral home burnt down or when he supposedly killed Katie Vick or maybe something in the psychiact hospital he went to at some point. There was so much potential story here, but it went nowhere especially with that Halloween costume.

And after all these years, Vince and WWE creative still don't know how to come up with great storylines.
