When a poor widow brought her offering to the temple, she hoped to go unseen because of how little she had to give. But God incarnate was there watching her, delighting in her selfless sacrifice. In this sermon, R.C. Sproul continues his exposition of the book of Mark.

I was 5 years of chronic illness! I was Semi Housebound, lost my health, job, finances and my fiance left me. I couldn't even look at electronic screen for 5 minutes, or hold a 10-minute conversation. But God did an amazing work. I now have a Christian Channel where I encourage people and show them what God did in my life and that there is hope for you also. ✝️🔥😊 *Keep believing even when it's hard* 🙏❤️🔥 *All things are possible with God*

Lion of Fire.....It is people like you that we need so badly to testify when it appears hope is lost..... I have always felt in my heart of hearts that hope is the most important thing to possess and if that is gone, we are in serious distress. God is love, not us. When hope is somehow removed, we got nothing ! I hope you help many who lose hope.

Thank you Lord. The humility of this poor woman moves my heart time and again! Giving from one‘s substance is surely an act of deep worship to the Lord, who sacrificed Himself for everyone of us without reservation! Yet we know that Jesus not only gave from his substance, HE WAS THE SUBSTANCE IN FULL! Although the woman was outwardly poor, she was abundantly rich in heart, mind and action! Her reward in heaven will be great!!!

She's not an example of how to give. She's an example of how the Scribes were devouring widows' houses.

For me, one of the biggest issues is our understanding of the Gospel. When I left being a paramedic to be in ministry, I didn’t realize how many people misunderstand how the Bible applies to our lives! That’s why I have centered my channel on helping people understand the Bible in a practical, relevant way that keeps the true Gospel at the heart of every teaching. I am preaching expositionally through the book of Mark and just recently had the privilege of tackling this passage!

She was poor for a reason. Widows can remarry but this woman did not and she gave everything she had, picked up her cross and followed Jesus. She was rich in that she was laying up her treasures in heaven to be with Jesus. This world didn't have anything important for her. She understood what was important, she *went for it!* That, .. impressed Jesus that she knew this life was but a vapor and everything turns to rust, mold and moss.

Who can live up to this expectation ?........granted, a most famous gift that could only be surpassed by the Savior of the world.....truly fascinating......so, who else can accomplish this kind of giving ?.....

He wasn't delighted in her gift. She was an example of how the Scribes were devouring widows' houses. Like John MacArthur said, I think he was angry that she was taught to give everything she had. The Scribes were devouring her house. Please read in context. Only widows are taught to give like that in the modern church. Give til it hurts. No. Those who do not provide for their own are worse than infidels. You don't say "it is a gift for God" and then not take care of your parents. "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! For Moses said, `Honor your father and your mother,' and, `Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death." In the Name of God, stop devouring widows' houses.

I've listened to John MacArthur's view on this, she was putting that money in a receptacle that all the Hippocrates with their fancy clothes had access to so that they could have those fancy clothes and other exorbitant things. They also taught that you could buy or earn your way to heaven, for show not heart. So therefore I can't completely agree with his explanation of that passage Because she would have been led to believe that she could buy/earn her way into God's grace. And I believe that that was the reason that he made the statement when He did.

Look for MacArthur’s 2 sermons about the story, in Mark and in Luke. This is an excellent sermon by dr. Sproul, but I really think that the one that got the right interpretation of this passage is dr. MacArthur. The widow was a victim of a wicked system, read the context. Blessings.

@@carmensiekierke3579 It's also correct. Jesus wasn't praising the widow. He was condemning the Scribes for devouring widows' houses. She's not an example of how to give.

All my respect to you brothers, but dr. MacArthur is right. Just look at the context of the story. All of it is not to praise the widow’s actions, but to condemn the religious hypocrites. They had to protect the lady, not abuse her. Hours later after all of this happened, our Lord died on the cross. Context, context, context.
