tbh I wouldn't even try to make it into a creature. It should be its own bio-dungeon and every tentacle and parasite would be a creature with a stat block. Maybe the Sea God was a kind of foreshadowing? Guts went up against a god, and he had to strike at a giant heart covered in eyes that resembled the Idea of Evil itself. He couldn't do it himself he needed everyone's help in doing it. If the merrows' unified voice could inhibit the Sea God, then could humanity's in the Astral World against the Idea of Evil, especially since the Astral World is influenced by mankind's thoughts?

Well Roderick and his crew are from Vritannis one of the richest and most prominent cities under the influence of the Holy See, who have a strong presence there. Many of the most prestigious of the noble families reside there. The city seems to be much richer and more modern than the kingdom of Midland. Roderick and his men are well paid and well know as they command one of the largest war galleons (boasting a near 60 gun armament!) in the fleet. Its safe to say they would have all the best and most expensive clothes and gear. Whereas Guts is a common mercenary from a small and less wealthy kingdom and his squad are basically country folk besides Farnese and Serpico. Farnese and Serpico don't care to wear flashy outfits any more after leaving the See so they prioritize utility and function over form.

This was completely necessarily. Ocean “gods” and creatures are such a huge part of every civilizations mythology. I mean think for a minute~ we’ve only mapped out a small percentage of the ocean, and in 2016 discovered a living organisms below the ocean floor, that doesn’t react to anything we try, that somehow lives without sunlight nor heat. It made the world so much bigger as it should be. And yes, I was frustrated by the boat arc, but it fits as the time. It always would peeve me a little how in movies/manga people would travel so quickly by sailboat and berserk went too far in the other direction ( I felt at the time) but it added so much potential.

Also if anything, I wonder if the Sea God and Ganishka's 2nd form weren't supposed to be parallels to each other. Griffith, with evil and Causality on his side, managed to effortlessly kill Ganishka with a single sword slice without a scratch. Guts, full of determination to save his friends, refusing to give up in the face of seemingly impossible odds, manages to kill the Sea God with a single slash of his blade.

I have a theory, what if the Sea God and the Idea of Evil were members of the same pantheon when the World of Berserk was more polytheistic. A parallel with Lovecraft would be the relationship between Cthulhu (a powerful demigod) and Yog Sothoth the sum of all forbidden knowledge (who looks not to dissimilar to the Idea of Evil). The Sea God may have been more powerful back then which is why it was forsaken into a weaker form by the Idea of Evil and the God Hand out of a possible rivalry between the two deities.
@Orsonfoe3 жыл бұрын
I believe they are from the same panthyon but not in a traditional sense. The two are the most basic of human concept. The see god the fear of the sea while the idea of evil is trying to understand evil.
@Appreciation-Community3 жыл бұрын
I would image they both gain power from the thoughts and beliefs of mankind. So maybe the Sea God being locked away beneath the sea for so long weakened it because as time passes less and less people know about it as the stories about it grow older and generations live and die. Maybe when the astral and physical world merged it got stronger and the people of the island essentially helped it regain more strength through reverence of it as it became more active again.

@@Orsonfoe Now that you say that you can interpret all of the monsters as the collective fears of humanity far easier. The standard monsters (Dragons, Trolls, Ogres, Kelpies (the best horse btw), and Hydras) represent just that the fear of these supposed monsters. While the individual apostles are the evils around an individual person or people in general being amplified to the point that their original humanity is all but gone (or exaggerated if you what to interpret it that way). Finally the God Hand and the Beast of Darkness are like the Idea of Evil and the Sea God are fears of greater powers in human life, Conrad=gluttony/pestilence, Ubik=manipulation, Slan=sexual violence, Void=destiny, Femto=betrayal, and finally the beast of Darkness is mindless violence.

I’m pretty sure it’s just a large creature from the astral plain as for it to be a god it’d have to be aloooot stronger

you know what would be wild? Berserk and God Of War crossover. Both Guts and Kratos have a thing about... wanting to kill Gods,... and they're both greatest badass. Imagine if they team up.

I really like the sea god arc, it’s got everything, badass fights, cool monsters, great characters and development, boobies...

Huh, unrelated note, but I had never really ready much Lovecraft, but I am a huge John carpenter fan. The synopsis you gave reminded me heavily of In the Mouth of Madness, which more than definitely means that's a likely inspiration for that movie as well, though the John carpenter film could have also played a roll as well for the manga.

It’s actually Father Dagon who grants the citizens of Innsmouth their weird fish curse not Cthulhu!

It also looks a bit like the Marlboro from the Final Fantasy series (also I want to submit Grumbeld for the next monster manual episode please :) )
