The publishing process is clever. In the real world you have to publish _something_ fairly frequently or you're out of the game, and submitting papers to conferences for the collaborative benefit offers other people the chance to leapfrog your work and gazump you, as does taking too long on making great research! That's some nice game design right there, even if the real-world publish or perish sucks big time.
@Duiker364 жыл бұрын
I feel like there's a surprisingly large amount of "this mechanic is fun in a game, but when you realize it's mirroring real life pretty well, suddenly reality is depressing".

But when you reach the end of the publishing track here the scientific community says if you're right or wrong If it was real life publishing, the app would say 'this idea is stupid and you're all stupid for being involved in this stupid idea' and 'i really like this publication, and think that with a few revisions it would be a fantastic addition to the scientific community' from two different reviewers Though that might be about as fun as receiving those reviews in real life
@KieronTaylor4 жыл бұрын
@@theoneandonlyjs19 Perhaps it would be fun if the other players could force you to issue a retraction, but you'd still have all the benefit of early publishing because your citation count would be through the roof... Another real life mechanich: The advancing the player pawns in the game while that messures "time", and that being reflectes by THE EARTH MOVING AROUND THE SUN, and not only that, but entering THE SEASONS art. So, as stupid as "move your pawn, the last player tajes his turn, and rotate the disc to match last player" is an incredibly elegant and fun and strategic way to do a thing as complicated as time passing while surveing the skies and entering in Spring. Im astonished of the clever things that are together in this game.

One thing not mentioned in the review - it's really great in solo. Probably the best solo implementation I've seen in board games ever. You play vs the bot, who similarly to real players also asks questions, but publishes only based on obtained answers. It's not a simple clock to make you nervous, the bot actually deduces information just like you. When he finds the planet you probably also have enough information to find it, you just haven't put all the pieces together as well. Can't recommend enough!

This is really exciting! Alchemists was one of the first games I got after discovering modern board games. We recently tried playing it again and even though it felt like we remembered most of the rules, it was SO time consuming to relearn. I said at the time that a game with the same core deduction mechanic without all the faff would be perfect and this looks to be exactly that! Thanks a lot SUSD for continuing to fuel my board game addiction...

@@saiyanroyalty229 Do you care about using an app? Someone could give a wrong clue in Cryptid, but that's not a problem with Planet X using an app. Also as Quinns says, different people could start with different amounts of starting information (if you play with kids, they can get more hints than you). Cryptid fell flat for me several times. We ran out of Yes/No pieces so I guess we didn't use all the clues correctly. Some commentators have talked about how deduction games can become “make a mistake and your out of the game”....so I’d like to recommend one of the very early examples of the genre Code 777 This sidesteps that problem because the hidden information is your 3 tiles, but you have to guess them three times to win - if you make a mistake you only lost one chance (and put a bit more information into the world for the other players). But importantly you can rebuild your knowledge base from that point and start fresh - the mistake doesn’t poison the whole game. It’s ace and doesn’t rely on an app!

Search for Planet X sounds interesting but how is it solo? Quinns spent quite a bit of the review talking about the ways players interact with each other, but in the beginning he mentioned it's a game for "1 to 4" players and I'm curious how it plays solo. I'm not sure I'd be able to convince my friends to play this that often but if it's a solid solo logic game I'd get it. 😄 Also when he was comparing it to other logic games, he left out Rising 5 Runes of Asteros which is kind of like a really fun hybrid of Mastermind and Pandemic. Definitely worth checking that one out if you're looking for great logic games to play solo or with your friends.
