Hi Johann, great to hear from you.. This is my favourite pass time.. Subjecting tents to high wind loads and measuring it... For me this is very important because high winds put a tent under big stress and it's mostly where they will fail. I really appreciate your comments and awesome to hear that you like real tests. I have quite a few of these on other tents too if you are interested... ATB Tom

I watched plenty of reviews, including yours Tom, and I almost got the Fjallraven Abisko Lite 3. It is much lighter than the Nammatj 3, flexibility of left/right door access, and a little bit cheaper. However, living here in the United States, I opted for the Hilleberg Nammatj mainly because of customer service, repair, and availability of spare parts, such as the availability of extra poles. The Hilleberg is a tent that I will own for a long long time so ultimately I chose Hilleberg.
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hi thank you for your comments. It's great to hear of your tent choice and reasons behind it. As you probably aware I also have a Nammatj 2 and it definitely will be more durable and has more space. But for me as one person using the tent then the Fjallraven offers enough space and 1KG weight saving. No doubt on the Hilleberg customer service and reputation but stock and some parts have also suffered just like most brands due to Covid... Hillebergs really hold their value so definitely a safer investment long term ... ATB and thank you once again fro your comments.... Tom

Hi Matt that's great to hear... I am sure that you will love it. I have used it about 7 times and very impressed but this time it really surprised me by its wind shedding ability. Under this amount of wind and rain my Hilleberg Nammatj 2 will have the fly and inner touch at the rear as the separation isn't great. This transfers moisture to the inside of the tent. This did not happen and I was also able to sleep with my head at the rear of the tent due to the slope on the ground.. ATB and I hope that you get out camping real soon in this awesome tent.... Tom

Hey Tom. I have the Abisko Shape 3 which I use with my son- the Shape 3 model gives that much more space for 2 people - with a massive vestibule but it's still only 2.5kg and that's no weight when you split it between two. I also have an extra pole set for double poling when the weather is really bad (I just prefer that extra peace of mind when I'm out with the young lad). I've had it in some horrendous nights in the Mournes and with double poles and double pegs (and rocks on top) I've always felt safe as houses in it. These are excellent tents and every bit a match for the Hillebergs in my view.

Hi Tom, great to see you are initially pleased with the Abisko lite 2. Looking forward to seeing your full review. As you may have gathered from my previous comments I am new to wild camping and opted for an MSR Elixir 2 as my starter tent and love it, as initially I had no intention of doing any cold weather camping. But after being instantly hooked I have dipped my foot in the colder months and been lucky enough to add an Abisko to my kit. I think it’s great, but took lots of practice in getting it pitched correctly being new to tunnel tents myself. As initially I was not pulling the tension straps firm enough until I became more confident in the fabric strength. I find it to be real sturdy even with the supplied pegs. From my research I could find any negative reviews and seeing Bushman and Blu get snowed in last winter in the Abisko assured me it was one tuff tent. The weight is spot on even with the added ground sheet and it is so stable in high winds. It is easy to pitch, especially when out alone. It is however like most two man tents just a comfortable one man tent, but the 3 man version would cover that need. I am 6,2 so I can get damp feet when it is windy and wet. Also found it’s height is an issue for me if sat on a chunky sleep mat. I see they do a mesh inner, which would make it lighter for warmer weather if folks don’t have a specific 3 season tent. I think it may have a thicker ground sheet? which would perhaps make the need for footprint less essential and lower the weight some more. I found AddNature have had lots of offers on Fjallraven tents of late, for anyone in the market for one. Apologies for the long comment, which is a review in itself. Regards Michael

Hi Nice to see a comment from a fellow tall camper I am 6’3” and when on a 7 cm mat the length often gets much shorter
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
I know this is a pain..... I managed with my head at the foot end of the tent on this occasion due to the sloping ground but with an air pillow and super thick mat I had to curl up a bit on my side and go slightly diagonal... . The separation at the rear of the tent is fab so if your feet tough the inner even then the inner does not touch the outer....
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I appreciate the long comment so thank you for taking the time to do it... Comments are a great information source for me and others too. I still have a lot to Lears and pick up knowledge from the comments on many occasions... I checked the groundsheet spec of the 2 and 3 Abisko lites and they are the same if that's what you are meaning.... The 3 person is only about 200 g heavier but higher too which will help the length at the rear due to a steeper sloping angle. Higher means it will catch a bit more wind though..... ATB Tom

Hi Tom. Good to see you out and about again. Compliments of the Season and wish you a prosperous New Year. The Abisko L2 looks like a keeper. I love most fjallraven products- excellent quality, especially their trousers, with prices to match. Conflicting reports on after sale service. I recall reading a comment on one of their tent models, where a customer wasn't very impressed with it. Then again, can't believe everything... Long term durability, could be an issue, dependent on QA/QC, with these products being manufactured in the far east. How is the stitching? Weight loss already has a vote from me. Getting older by the minute. Enjoy, David.
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hi David, great to hear from you. This will be a keeper. I have checked the quality of the stitching and it's seriously well made. So much thought has gone into this tent with insane attention to detail. Durability is at the mercy of thinner fabrics though Fjallraven mix fabrics on this tent. 20d on the main fly but 40d close to the ground and at all the attachment points... This probable costs more to produce but when production is in China then it balances out... ATB Tom

The former was good. Had some 8 hour unbroken sleeps in it in the snow. But I now use the Hilleberg Nallo, and I find it slightly superior in every way, and worth a little extra weight and space. If I reinforce the polls, I hope to avoid buying the very temptingly-fortress-like Nammatj for Winter.

Glad you like the tent Tom. I actually sold my Nammatj 2 for for an Abisko lite 2. I’ve had it in some really bad conditions and it seems to handle the wind better than my Nammatj due to its lower profile. Fjallraven customer service have been excellent with me. They sent me some free seam sealant and also pushed a set of poles to the UK web store for me to purchase when they store was out of stock. I used mine with double poles and it was incredibly solid. The tent, official foot print and two sets of poles weighs in at 3kg which is incredible when you think it could literally handle any weather in that set up. Anyway, enjoy the tent 👍

Hi Tom, I have owned and used the Abisko endurance 2 for just about three years now and I am extremely pleased with it. I got it for winter trips with my GF and it's taken a beating and still looks almost new. I had to acquire 2 new guy lines (dog chewed them) but couldn't find them on their website. A quick email to fjallraven and despite me offering to pay for them including any postal costs, they sent me two new replacements free of charge and no p&p. I have no concerns regarding their customer service based on my personal experience. I have spent good money with fjallraven owning the endurance 2, Kajka 75 backpack, a Singi stubben pack, keb trousers and other odds and sods. All top notch. Not for the uber light enthusiasts but dependable robust well thought and designed gear that I'm more than happy with. Personally I would have thought the abisko lite 1 was more of a comparison to the hilleberg akto rather than this tent but weight wise I see where your coming from. For really narly conditions the Keb range of tents are the "black label" versions of their tent models but tbh overkill for most UK users most of the time in my humble opinion.

Hey Dave I really appreciate you sharing your experience of Fjallraven products and particularly their customer service, thank you. Great to hear of your specific tent experience too. All of the feedback I am getting here is very good so this will really help me when I do a full review. I have been looking at their Keb range and if they did a Keb 2 I think I would buy one as I prefer their mix of fabrics compared to Hilleberg... Like you say though mostly likely a waste for many UK users and conditions... I agree re the Abisko Lite 1 Vs the Akto and this would be a great one but I feel many are put off by the small size of the one person tents and the Lite 2 is the pick of all three. ATB Tom

Hey Andrew great to hear from you.... Yes I have the Nammatj 2 and an Akto so I will compare both in my review or do two separate ones... I have taken this tent as my choice over the Nammatj 2 on my last 6 camps. Not that I have tested it in serious wind and its performance was amazing I just wont be using my Nammatj and probably will move it on. I dont need the extra space and am careful enough with the fabrics so that durability wont be an issue.... ATB Tom

Hi Kevin, great to hear from you.... Trouble is I have used this tent on my last 5 camping trips and cant get motivated to carry another kilo in weight with the Nammatj... There is enough space and it's very strong. The tent has had a good hammering now on at least 3 camps in high winds but now has a tiny bit of fly damage close to a pole that I have no idea how it happened. That's the trouble with the super light fabrics when you expose them to harsh conditions. The durability of the Nammatj is a big plus point.... ATB and thank you for your great comment... Tom

Very interesting, thorough and quality review as usual Tom. I have the Nammatj 3GT with the Great Dane, as you know, but I have often seen the Fjallraven an wondered about them being notably lighter by comparison. Thanks for sharing this. Richard.

Hi Richard, this was just a quick one but giving a taster regarding this tent... Some of the fabrics are very light and wouldn't stand too much abrasion. The floor is 40d compared to 100d of the Nammatj and the inner fabric here is 15d compared to 40 on the Nammatj... The tent is still very strong but just needs more care looking after it. Your dogs claws might not get on too well with the groundsheet... But you could always put the footprint inside the tent...... ATB and thank you for watching and commenting... Tom

I agree that this tent has outstanding qualities. As you said: the weight, the enormous amount of space and its capabilities of coping with high winds (what I never testet, cause I had owned this tent only for a short time). Apart from those things, I find, that also the built quality is superb. Another nice thing is, that you can use the tent with two poles to make it even stronger. However, there are two things which I dont like about the tent, which made me sell it again. First, maybe only for some important, it is made in China. Second (and that is more important): it is really flat in the back part. I am only 170 cm tall, but when I lay down flat in the tent I would have to lay very close to the inner tent door to avoid touching the back wall of the inner tent. Anyway, apart from those two things it is a really good tent.
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hey Mattes thank you for your comments and sharing your experience of the tent here... The risk with products from China IMO is usually build quality but here you state that it is superb so is there another practical reason that you are not so keen on products made in China. I totally get it regarding the flat back part but this really helps with weight reduction and aerodynamics.. Thats my only con with the tent and that's interior length. However the inner and outer separation are really good at the back so that helps a bit. I do also find the inner height especially towards the rear a bit restrictive but understand this helps with stability and weight reduction. As a two person tent I would not rate the tent so highly due to lack of space but for one person its pretty good.... ATB and really appreciate your comments. Tom

@@TOMHEANEY100 Hallo Tom, thanks for your reply. I really like the content of your channel a lot; your calm, analytic and still entertaining way of talking about things/ tents. Important for me to mention this...🙂Concerning the Fjällräven Abisko lite 2: the reason why I am trying to avoid buying products from China has rather personal/ (geo)political reasons. To make a long story short. But obviously that has nothing to do with the tent itself. I like a lot of what this tent offers. I mentioned some of them already. I also like the gentle and discret colors and the shape, which as you already mentioned supports stability and low weight. If the backpart was not so flat I am sure I would have kept it. I am interested in this tent too, seen it in use on the Bushman and Blue channel. It would be interesting to see how it copes with strong side winds because i always think nearly all tunnel tents with end vent look good when the wind direction is blowing them up aerodynamically . This Abisko looks better than my HB Nallo in those type of winds for sure .......I am also keen to hear your views on the ultimate 3/4 season boot without going full mountain boot. This time of the year is always a bit hit and miss in the UK but for 1 nighters it doesn't matter a great deal if you go a bit on the heavy side but for multi nighters with plenty of miles to cover its a bit of a balancing act especially if the temps plummet and the snow falls.
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hey Olan thank you for your comments especially as you own a Hilleberg Nallo... Small differences in spec can make a big difference in performance... The rear pole on this tent is 9.6mm I think and the rear is lower than the Nallo. It also has a guy line supporting the vent and this all adds to a very strong wind profile. I find when it's really windy the wind mainly comes from the one direction and here I added an extra guy line on each pole to support the tent from the side as the wind did change direction slightly. This makes a big difference. You also have the option here of double poling and this will further strengthen the tent side on..... ATB Tom

Have you needed to seam seal yours Tom? I ask because I've only used mine a couple of times and when I used it in heavy rain, meaning an all day downpour, it started to drip through the seams over the vestibule area. I didn't notice any other leaks btw. I did have the tensioners on the corner pegs really tight so maybe the stitching holes were stretched enough to leak through. Not sure but I think I will seam seal it. Other than that it' s a great tent, plenty of room for one person.

Hi Dave, thank you for your comments and sharing your experience. No I have not seam sealed this tent. This is the first time that I have had it out in heavy rain. It rained and lashed super heavy for 3 hours. The wind was making the rain hit the back of the tent at super high pressure and not a single drop came through. Not even any drops onto the inner. Raining all day like you had is a big challenge for any tent and it's not that often that this will happen. Dampness usually finds its way somehow... Hi Tom, a comparison video between the abisko lite 2 and the nallo 2 would be much appreciated indeed. The main question: are the abisko lite poles smaller and less resistant than the nallo ? And which one has the best venting system ? I have an MSR front range for alpine usage but I am looking for a stronger wind resistant option. Cheers from Switzerland
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hey David definitely the perfect comparison. I would need to source a Nallo and that's hard to do... I depend a lot on subscribers allowing me to borrow tents so I have to take what I can get or own myself. The Abisko Lite 2 uses a mix of poles. 9mm for the rear and 9.6mm for the front.. The poles are also shorter and the tent is lower than the Nallo so this really helps with stability. It can also be double poled. Venting is really good in the Abisko as both vents are large and placed high which catches more air. Separation at the rear is better than my Nammatj but I cant comment on the Nallo. I found this tent extremely wind resistant, in fact as stable as my Nammatj which is impressive. You just need to be aware that the aerodynamics and low profile sacrifice interior space particularly for two.... ATB Tom

Hi, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. I dont really rate this tent for two people. It's just too small. The durability particularly the groundsheet may not be suitable for the terrain. I heard of a few people puncturing 70d floors in tents and the floor here in this tent is only 40d. For constant exposure to harsh weather I would recommend a tent with heavier duty fabrics such as the Hilleberg Kaitum or Nammatj 2 or Fjallraven Ken 2. Happy New Year, Tom. Good to see you’re venturing out to see what’s over the fence. It looks like you added a couple of extra ‘guy lines, was that simply to give it extra stability? Did you feel that the std guy lines weren’t enough? How thick is the fabric, it didn’t look that thick, or is it still strong? I look forward to seeing your full review. I know this company has a great name and right up there with the best of the best.
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hi Barry, happy new year to you too. I hope that you are well. The extra guy lines were to support the tent from the side as some gusts were from a slightly different angle ...The main guys front and back need to be angled away from each other as you know and that helps keep the fabric and pole tension tight. As they are then angled forwards and backwards the poles are little vulnerable from the side just like any tunnel tent. Hilleberg also recommend this if the wind is changing direction. To be fair I probably didn't need to do this but prevention of problems is better than waiting until they happen. The main fly fabric on this tent is 20d but at the bottom and where all the straps attach it is 4OD. This is stronger than the Anjan as its only 20d all over the fly. It is potentially better than the Nallo as its fabric is 30d all over and the strap attachments are into this so the Fjallraven straps and anchors are in 40d fabric.. Bit like a pack having stronger heavier fabric where its needed and weaker lighter where it isn't. The floor of this tent is 40d compared to 70 on a Nallo but this can be overcome by a footprint and here I use a light one at 160g. So I build a strong case for this tent and its performance to weight to space ratio. The quality and attention to detail is insanely good too as is the price....Tom

Hi Andy as I am sure you know its complicated... The Abisko is 400g lighter and may be a little more stable in winds due to the fact that it is lower and has a thicker pole at the front. As a one person tent it functions very well but tight for two.... However I had two problems with Fjallraven which means personally they are not for me... The 20d fabric developed a kind of fabric pull close to the pole at the front. This was the only Fjallraven tent I have ever sampled and it had a problem... I have sampled I am sure 20 Hillebergs and never seen this.... secondly Fjallraven didn't want to know and were not helpful at all by just offering me a repair kit or for me to pay for a third party repair... It even took two emails sent a week apart to even get a response... Finally getting my Nammatj 2 tomorrow so will be testing it out in winter camping conditions over the next two months. 😊 🎉😂 Thank you, Tom!

Hey thank you very much for your comments and new year greetings.. Happy new year to you and your family too... I have had the Abisko out twice in snow but didn't make a video. I will include my thoughts in the detailed review though.. As I have a Nammatj I will definitely compare the two... The best of luck with your new tent day tomorrow and congratulations on such a great choice. it will serve you very well. the fabric and pole durability on the Nammatj are insane.... ATB Tom

In my experience the Fjallraven tents are very comparable in quality and durability to the Hillebergs. Their after sale support is very much different however. Fjallraven don't really have the capability to repair anything for you since they have no in-house manufacturing... And in my experience it's also slightly harder to find spare parts.
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hi thank you for this. I totally get the repair thing and this is a pity as tents are easily damaged. The quality and thoughts behind this tent are fantastic.. More attention to detail than Hilleberg. But there is no doubt that Hilleberg offer greater possibilities for repairs and spare parts.... ATB Tom

Really sad to hear this. My Abisko Lite 1 has some damage to the inner where the ties for the fly attach to it after a night being caught out in continual winds of over 60mph (with even higher gusts). To be fair to the tent, it kept me warm and dry and didn't completely fail as I honestly was waiting for it to do but I was really hoping I could get Fjallraven to fix it in the coming months ahead of a big Nordic trip I'm planning. I really hope you're wrong about the customer service as it'd be a real shame to let the tent go rather than just have it repaired 😥

Great review and great tent. Looks like the tent is very similar to a Hilleberg Nallo 2. The Abisko is 2070g and the Nallo is 2400g. That means 330g lighter then the Hilleberg. Am I correct?
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hi Falk, great to hear from you and your thoughts on a Nallo 2... It's a tough one between these two.... The Abisko is definitely lighter but smaller due mainly to it being lower. This really helps the stability though as does the 9.6mm pole at the front.... Ventilation options grater too... Just watch the size as this is a very small two person tent.... ATB Tom

I've been using my Fjallraven G66 Extreme for over 40 years, including one three month backpacking trip. It's still waterproof and there have been no issues. At 71 years old though, I'm looking around for something easier to get in and out of and perhaps something with more ventilation. The G66 is a fabulous tent and bomb proof, but it is a product of its time. Designs have moved on.
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hey thank you for commenting and sharing your experience of the G66 Extreme. I had a quick look for it... Is it a ridge tent ? ATB Tom
@fanlightfranny Жыл бұрын
@@TOMHEANEY100 yes, it's a ridge tent, sloping along its length. The design went through several changes. I had a previous one (which I wish I'd kept). This one had a larger front porch and a guy line half way along each side. I bought a new one simply because I was going backpacking for three months and wanted to be sure of the tent. In hindsight, I don't think I need have worried. However, the newer version had a smaller porch and a weird pole arrangement over the top halfway along the tent - but very effective! The tent was 'silvered' (not good when trying to hide out of the way!). It also made it very dark inside. The cramped ridge design and no ventilation meant coming into contact with condensation was inevitable, both when moving around during sleep and more particularly when getting dressed etc.

@@TOMHEANEY100 Thank you! Have you ever had a look at the Lightwave MTN tents? The spec is hard to beat and it's clear a lot of thought has gone in to them. They have 50D sil/sil outers, 4 x 10mm DAC poles, 21 peg points and great vestibules at 2.8kg for the 2-man. I use the G20 when working in the hills in the worst weather (it's too heavy to be my go-to solo tent - hence me looking at the Abisko Lite 2). It's also a faff to put up (velcro pole ties on the outer are fiddly), but it doesn't move once it's up.
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
@@bergo2519 Hi I have looked at Lightwave tents many times as they look great on paper. I have had a bad experience of two of them and also crux when I worked in the industry. @@TOMHEANEY100 I've not had any troubles so far, but I also haven't had it out often enough to say it's definitely bombproof in the long-term. I have an old Terra Nova Polar Lite 2 that has lasted well and, bizzarely, was 300g lighter than the manufacturer's published weight (under 2.6kg with decent pegs vs 2.95kg as sold). It's a shame they still don't make that range as nothing they currently sell stacks up against the Abisko Lite 2 or Hilleberg Nallo 2 (a comparision between those two and/or a Kaitum 2 would be interesting).

Hi Tom, as someone new to camping, your videos and opinions are very valuable. I’m looking for a good 4 season 1 person tent for long distance backpacking. After a lot of research I’m thinking of getting the Abisko 2. Do you think this is a good choice or are there other contenders that I should research before making my decision? Thanks for the amazing content!

Hi thank you for the comment. Great to hear of your plans.. Yes this is a decent tent but I did have a fabric issue with mine and Fjallraven was not interested... Obviously the Hilleberg Nallo 2 is a great option and for something different look at the Tarp Tent Scarp 1 Ultra or just the Scarp 1.. These are very light and strong with great space for one. Brilliant looking Tent, Tom. Crazy stats as well, I didn't even consider this manufacturer before buying my most recent Hille but based on this video, it would definitely be something for the future for me. Thanks for sharing 👍 Do you think it handles just as well as some of your other Hillebergs? Cheers. Adam.
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, this tent was easier to set up than my Nammatj due to its lower wind profile... The Nammatj is very strong but it catches so much wind and there is so much pressure on the guys because of this... The abisko here is also 400g lighter than a Soulo and miles more space. Not just as durable though with thinner fabrics such as a 40d groundsheet compared to the 70d on the Soulo. This can be sorted though by use of a footprint.... ATB and great to hear from you. I know Stuart really likes this tent too.... Tom

It depends on what each individual uses it for. If your thing is camping in winter in exposed wind conditions then this is the type of tent needed to keep you safe.... If you don't camp in high wind environments then as you say hard to justify the costs... ATB Tom

Hey Kieran, thank you for your positive comments... This is great news to hear... What colour did you go for? Tent was just single poled and really solid. Wasn't under much pressure at all so I was really happy as this is a super windy location. A friend had to bail the next night here due to the wind and he had a really good tent. I think its great that you include a Fjällräven tent in your bank of tent brands... give them a chance. I am from the country of both brands, when it comes to tent I have so far just kept to Hilleberg (and Tentipi for slightly different use) but my first tent way back was a Fjällräven pyramid tent, I was omly 18... It was definitely a high quality product, had it in very hard wind, took it to 2-3 week backpacking trips in Lapland, twice in winter with snow (never in january febuary though). Never had any issue exept it needed a small mod to stop mosquitos from coming in at night.
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hi Bo, thank you for your comments...Yeah I use products that honestly work for me irrespective of the brand. There are a few points about Hilleberg tents that I feel could be better but they dont do it because they already sell lots of tents.. I love this tent because it has performed amazingly well in every trip that I have had it out. On this trip as far as moisture transfer under high rain load goes, it was better that my Hilleberg Nammatj 2 . Due to its lower profile it catches less wind and was just as stable if not more so as well... Not going to be as durable or quite the same space but it is 1kg lighter.... Some food for thought.... Trying to decide between the abisko lite 3 and Nallo 3, me and the dog in winter and perhaps me and the Mrs and the dog in summer although that will probably never happen 😂 I actually ordered the abisko but then saw a comment about head height being very tight so cancelled and still sitting here deciding…
@TOMHEANEY100 Жыл бұрын
Hi Roger, thank you for reaching out... Because you mention the dog, I would recommend the Nallo.... The fabrics on the Abisko are very very light and prone to accidental damage.. For example - Floor of Nallo 70d. Floor of Abisko 40d. Inner tent of Nallo 30d. Inner tent of Abisko 15d. The fly of the Nallo is also 30d all over where the Abisko is a mix of 20 and 40. D means denier which is basically the material thickness. I choose the Abisko as strength and lightweight are main priorities. I just hope that it's durable long term. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any further thoughts and what one you go for... ATB Tom
