Before anyone says that Discord is bad, let's try to figure out some things, what foreshadowed this and did or did he do something good in this ending, and also why Twilight demanded to release him as a friend. And so, why did he betray them? Of course, ponies didn't like him, except Fluttershy. She only accepted Discord for who he was, just like Princess Cadance, because they both have the kindest hearts. He is chaos by nature, this is his essence and cannot be changed. the rest simply hate him and do what Princess Celestia said so that they could “befriend” him. But they are not friends, they simply tolerate him. No one sees that he acts like Celestia as a mentor, but no one notices his efforts. Yes, he does it in his own way, through deception, provocations and lies, but it works. After all, it was he who proposed to Zecora at the beginning of the season and he forced Twilight to return to his friends in his own way. So, Tirek took advantage of the fact that the ponies were not friends with him and appealed to his chaotic personality that he should not live like this, and the main thing was freedom. He literally states that if Discord doesn't want to be "at the pony's errand." But in fact, this is how it is. if the ponies were really friends with him, then there would be no betrayal. Now as to why Twilight demanded that Discord be released as a friend. It's all about the pages that he marked to open the chest. We see that he really tried to be a good friend. Now what about whether Discord did anything good in the finale. He did, and it became decisive. It was he who directed the others to try to open the chest so that Twilight would feel like a Princess. Discord bookmarked important points in the book so that clues would appear. It was as if he had foreseen his betrayal in order to prepare the others to fight Tirek. And in the final, this chest became decisive. If someone says that Discord is not needed in the show, then at the beginning of season 4 the forest would have completely swallowed up Ponyville or at the end of season 4 without Discord Tirek would have simply taken over all of Equestria since none of the ponies thought about the chest

If Discord wasn't in the show, the Elements of Harmony would never have been found in the first place. The Princesses went out to find them strictly BECAUSE Discord was threatening Equestria. Nightmare Moon would've taken over and nothing would have been able to stop her. Also the mane six wouldn't have been brought together. Discord might be a bit aloof, but without him alot of things wouldn't have been possible in the series.

yup yup yup exactly my thoughts- I feel that people are always too harsh on judging him without thinking about WHY. in keep calm and flutter on, celestia says she only wants him released so they can use his magic, and not a single one of the mane six besides fluttershy was willing to try reform him through friendship. they ignore celestia’s advice that fluttershy will be most successful and immediately jump to FORCEFUL SPELL REFORMATION, which would’ve probably completely altered his very being (and have been weirdly non-consensual?). I don’t know how twilight became princess of friendship 3 episodes after trying to force submission and not even trying to be friendly. he has literally NEVER had a friend, and though it may seem harsh against the ponies, I don’t think it was fair to expect him to make the first move. friendship wasn’t an option he thought possible until fluttershy called him her friend. as an autistic person who really sucks at making/understanding/keeping friends, I do feel for him. he plays it up a lot saying stuff like “when will I ever understand how to be a good friend” as a joke, but I think there’s something to that. he genuinely does not understand friendship from his inexperience, but also by his nature- he may not ever be able to understand friendship the same as everyone else. writing him off because of who he is and the way his brain works isn’t fair. starting their relationship(s) off like this, it’s easy to see how discord might not feel they care about him/who he is. and it still continues all through season 4 when they are “friends”; sly comments, eyebrow raising, insulting… when discord is tasked to fight tirek, no one but flutters has anything positive to say. I mean, they reformed him for THIS PURPOSE, and even NOW they can’t show him a little support? a “good luck with tirek, we believe in you!” and not a “I hope that obnoxious dick doesn’t backstab us” would’ve been nice, even if it was a lie and they were worried about him turning on them. it really feels like a bad end to a choice based game. you weren’t kind enough to him, so in the climax he decides he’s better off turning against you. fluttershy’s singular efforts were clearly not enough. PS. considering future seasons, I also find it safe to assume that the ponies at this point in time and the past were racist asf. of course they inherently disliked the only guy made of 20 different creatures. (this one is kind of a joke but also kinda true lmao)

oh you devoured with this explanation and it’s so true!! it’s very cohesive and makes the most sense as to why he does things the way that he does, even if they’re very frustrating and questionable. i mean he lowkey said it himself in the show that the only one who was worth it was fluttershy because she accepted him as he is, therefore he felt the most guilty about his own betrayal because it truly hurt her edit: another person brought up racial themes that are targeted in the show amongst other creatures, and i feel like that’s also a small percentage of the reason too especially in later seasons.

I love twilight's adjustment to her new identity and what that might mean, the element of magic taking on all the alicorn magic in equestria and her getting her key by choosing to give it all up?? its so good. and the animation for the Tirek fight scene? peak.

"Inspiration Manifestation" is one of the wackiest Spike/Rarity episodes. It takes Spikes obsession with Rarity to a whole other level since he resorted to using magic to help her and as we all know magic isn't the answer for everything, Though the moment that Owlicious was in the bookcase made me laugh. And of course the shenanigans that Rarity got into with all of that dark magic was also hilarious, But some of the stuff Rarity created was amazing like when she changed Applejack's cart and when she put a period dress on RD and even Spike looked pretty badass in that crystal armor, I also can't believe that Spike ate that whole book in one bite cartoon logic I know but it's still an awesome feat. Anyway, At least Spike learned his lesson in the end. As for "Equestria Games" some people in the fandom still consider it to be one of Spike's weakest episodes, But I for one think it's interesting. Especially because we finally got to see the mlp Equivalent of the Olympic games and of course learning that Spike was a big shot in the Crystal Empire was also somewhat interesting but also not surprising considering that like everypony said he had a hand/hoof in saving the Empire from Sombra. But I won't lie when I say that out of all the scenes in this episode, The part where Spike tries to sing the Cloudsdale anthem is the absolute cringiest scene of the entire episode at least to me it is because no matter what, I can't watch that part of the episode without doing a facepalm and feeling awkward the entire time. But other than that, I find the episode to be interesting. Congrats on finishing season 4 Aimsey, And I look forward to when you start your reactions to season 5! "Twilight's Kingdom" parts 1 and 2 are another one of my all time favorite season finales in the FIM series! It was interesting to see what Tirek looked like in the G4 artstyle, Fun fact: Tirek is yet another leftover character from previous mlp generations G1 I believe. And to this day, The fight scene between Tirek and Twilight is still considered to be one of the most badass scenes in the entire fim series which it is! And it kinda wasn't a surprise that Tirek even betrayed Discord which was deserved since Discord betrayed the Mane 6 which was a classic double, Double cross scene. And even though Discord deserved it when Tirek took his magic away at least he seemed to somewhat learn a lesson from it. I instantly loved "You'll Play Your Part" and "Let the Rainbow Remind You" they became two of my favorite season 4 songs! In fact I found "Play Your Part" to be a somewhat relatable song since it was about Twilight having trouble trying to figure out how she fits into Equestria's royal hierarchy, Because you know when you're new at something it's hard to figure out what place you have in it and all that. And finally, Twilight's new castle was totally badass too. Though it still sucks that the Golden Oaks Library was destroyed. A lot of people in the fandom were really upset about that, Especially since the Castle of Friendship was only created as a way for Hasbro to say "Buy our toys" but still.

So they wanted to start incorporating major changes in the season finales. This way if the show was canceled, the finale would be memorable no matter what.

While yeah discord was bad to betray them, tirek pretty much manipulated him. At this point in the series only fluttershy considered him a friend and everypony else considered him a nuisance that they still couldnt fully trust. So its obvious why discord switched sides. He had his doubts throughout the episode too, you can tell, and then tirek pulled him right back in by manipulating him with his brothers necklace. Discord thought if he could make friends with another villain, he could get power and friendship, but that's not the case. They work on him a lot more in the upcoming seasons and he becomes more tolerable as well as friendly, especially with fluttershy (fluttercord otp)
