Fun (and not so) facts for these episodes! 1) The little 'Alador rat' is actually Alador's Palisman! He was a reference to a storyboard where Alador posed similarly to Remy from Ratatouille. A storyboarder for this episode then sneaked the Alador rat in as a joke, but Dana liked it so much she decided to keep it in and call it Alador's Palisman. 2) There is no homophobia on the Boiling Isles. Still, there were plenty of people surprised when Odalia made the 'criminal' part of Luz being Amity's partner the problem. 3) Dana Terrace actually made a drawing of King without his skull, revealing his two exposed eyeballs and long, purple tongue. This drawing is canon. 4) When Belos said, "I don't want to see another human life destroyed by this place," he was referencing his brother's life. 5) Upon seeing Flapjack, Belos screamed, 'CALEB!?'--revealing his brother's name to be Caleb Wittebane and Flapjack's original owner. This was foreshadowed back in 'Any Sport in a Storm', when Flapjack gave Hunter 'Caleb' as a fake name to use. Also, for whatever reason, many streaming sites subtitled that moment as 'KILL HIM!?' and fans were arguing over which one Belos said until the TOH crew came forward and confirmed that it was 'Caleb.' 6) Someone went back and counted all of the Golden Guard masks in the pit, finding roughly 58. This means that the average lifespan of a Golden Guard was roughly 8 years before Belos ultimately killed them. 7) In the original storyboards, when Belos got gooped by the Collector, there was a 'splash zone' that the Hexsquad had to dodge. They all managed to, save for Hunter, who got splattered head to toe and nearly vomited. 8) When 'King's Tide' first aired, I remember fans that were watching in Connecticut said that it began to rain that night--just like how it was raining when Luz came home. There were certainly a wide range of emotions when the finale first aired. I remember being heartbroken that Eda--the poster child for wild witches--got a sigil. It felt like an actual loss, even though she wasn't dead. And the moment when King sent Luz to the Human Realm to protect her... Man, the tears would not stop. I was so heartbroken. I tried to take comfort knowing that there would be more Vee screentime in season 3 and that Caleb's name was FINALLY revealed (the Wittebane side of the fandom went hard btw), but the hiatus between seasons was BRUTAL... I, too, cannot believe someone saw this absolute masterpiece of a show and decided to axe it. All because it dared to have canon LGBT characters. Fuck you, Disney.

a couple of things about the show's cancellation, dana confirmed that after the episode where luz reunites with her mother, the whole season had to be rewritten because they got the new that they were cancelled, here are some things we know about it, first, the bat queen was gonna have a bigger role and have their origins explained, it's believed that she was gonna be the titan's palisman, and the tower where king was born was gonna be her sceptre, the stones that gus discovered that augment a witch's powers were also gonna play a bigger role, remember that gus said that they wanted to come back there, the coven heads were also gonna have a bigger role and possibly each have an episode dedicated to developing them, and this one is gonna really bother danny, there was gonna be an episode explaining hooty's origins and where he came from. And lastly, and my personal favourite, while is not 100% confirmed, it's said that disney excutives regreted cancelling the show after seeing the numbers it was making

I don't know how Belos was originally going to obtain power, but it didn't involve an all-powerful toddler. Darius knew the previous Golden Guard personally, that is the reason why Hunter commented on Hollow Mind that Darius looked sad on one of the pictures. Darius lost someone close to him and he most likely suspected Belos having a hand on that. There's no redemption arc, he's been waiting to take him down but kept quiet and waited for the right time to strike.

Danny, Darius never had a redemption arch. The coven heads were simply never a united group. In fact, you get hints as to when Darius began to stray, by his talk about his past with the previous golden guard and how sad he was at Hunter's coronation (in Hollow Minds). Basically, he stopped being loyal when he realised what happened to the previous Golden Guard, who likely turned against Belos.

I have always head canoned that the previous golden guard survived into adulthood before turning on Belos, and Darius had a romantic connection with him. Since Hunter is bisexual, it would follow that his predecessor would have been as well, and if the previous GG was around Darius's age before Belos dispatched him, perhaps they were involved. I've headcanoned it because it harms nothing in the narrative, and would help explain one of the reasons Darius is so sad at Hunter's coronation, why he chose to work against Belos in the first place, and why he's so angry at Hunter's blind obedience. If he watched the process of a former lover begin to question and defect from Belos only to be brutally murdered, it would really twist the knife to watch a kid who looks just like that dead lover show unquestioning loyalty to the killer.

@@keigoftw Your right. Its insane we don't discuss how truly messed up the whole Golden Guard thing is. Because we have to remember the timeline, Belos has been doing his evil plan for 400 years, for most of that time he has had Golden Gaurd serve him, until they betray him and then he creates a new one. Now if we were to assume the Golden Guards are created as babies and age normally, then in 400 years time, factoring in that some probably served Belos well into the 20s maybe even 30s before betraying him and some betrayed him at young ages like Hunter in his teens, he could have only had about 20 maybe 30 Golden Guards before Hunter, and Hollow Mind seemed to back that up because when Hunter found Golden Guard graveyard with all the masks and portraits there were only about 14 masks there. However, then we get to King's Tide here where Kikimora shows us where the failures end up as she puts it, and we see the true Golden Graveyard and we see a large number of skulls and broken masks, each one representing a Golden Guard Belos killed and while I couldn't count them all there is clearly way more then 30, probably at least 50 maybe close to 100. And we also have to factor in not every dead Golden Guard is down there, because as we saw with the portraits in Hollow Mind, some of the Golden Guards were killed in ways that meant they couldn't leave a body behind to add to the skull pile, like the one that got turned to stone or the one that got drowned in quicksand. If the Golden Guards aged normally then there is no way Beos could have killed so many in just 400 years, which leds to only one conclusion that really shows how messed up the orgins and creation of the Golden Guards is and how even more of monster Belos is for what he does to them, and that conclusion is the Golden Guards are accleratedly aged. Most of them if not all of them were never kids, they probably all popped as pre-teens or teenagers, maybe some even popped out older. So even through he looks 16, Hunter is probably younger then that like 10, which makes all the stuff he and the other Guards went through even more messed up and makes many fans, myself included, hate Belos even more.

The first time I watched this finale, my heart was in my throat. The buildup and rampant death flags were so intense and at that point, I had no clue how far TOH would push things for a 'kids' show." I did cry when King sacrificed himself so Luz and the others could escape. I'm overjoyed you've come to love this series the way I have. It'll always be bittersweet because some asshole decided to axe such a wildly creative story, but at least we got to see the heart of what Dana and her crew poured their all into making.

Amphibia was also running at more or less the same time and had a similar issue, but it was a bit more kid friendly and so it had more episodes. Companies have this thing where once they get big enough they become terrified of public backlash, and they start just pandering as much as possible. As though having people view your corporation a certain way is going to keep you afloat better than actually selling a fucking decent product. Now that we have the full message, I can go into detail about its meaning. The first thing to know is that the message has two separate, parallel meanings to it. The first reading is that the message is about King and his heritage as a titan. The “Seething seas” are in reference to the two journeys across the sea to distant islands that center in King’s narrative of discovery during the season: to the Unknown Island from ep 2x03, and to Titan Trapper Island from ep 2x17. “Puppet strings” is in reference to King’s connection to the Collector, the context for which will become much more apparent in season 3. The reference to him “no longer dream[ing] of kings” alludes to King no longer aspiring to be feared/treated as actual royalty, as seen in ep 2x19. The “father” that lies below is, of course, the Titan, whose corpse forms the literal ground below King’s feet. The second reading is that the message is about Hunter and discovering the truth about Belos. “Seething seas” can be referring to Hunter’s introduction in ep 2x01, _Separate Tides._ The “puppet strings” are Belos’ manipulation of Hunter, and the statement that Hunter “no longer dreams of kings” refers to Hunter no longer looking up to Belos; “king” here refers to Belos in his capacity as emperor/monarch of the Boiling Isles. The “father” that lies below is Belos’ deceased brother, who Hunter was cloned from. The line about “rush-darkened skies” is, across both readings, in reference to the eclipse that occurs during the season finale. Additionally, now that we’ve gotten to the end of season 2, I can finally explain the second meaning to the message from season 1, since it too has two parallel readings. For a refresher, the season 1 message was “Two witches torn apart, now alone. Two hearts of stone. A curse of feathers and mud. A betrayal of blood”. The first reading-and most obvious following the season 1 finale-is that the “two witches torn apart” are Eda & Lilith, with the message being about their falling out as a result of the owl-beast curse, the “curse of feathers”. The second parallel reading, however, is that the “two witches torn apart” are Belos and his brother. (Note that the word “witch” in this version does not mean the species, but instead the more general sense of “magic user”; the usage is that same as when Luz talks about wanting to “become a witch”.) Them being “now alone” alludes both to their earlier separation between the human & demon realms, and their later separation between being alive vs being dead. The “curse of mud” is the ailment Belos inflicted onto himself due to his palisman consumption. The “blood” of the “betrayal of blood” is both metaphorical, i.e. family, and literal, i.e. the blood from Belos stabbing his brother to death. The “two hearts of stone” may also be conjectured as having a similar dual metaphorical/literal meaning; Belos’ heart is emotionally turned to stone, while all the grimwalker clones of his brother have literal galdorstone hearts.

Each code is visibly indicated with an eye symbol to the left of it. If you go through an episode slowly & keep your eyes peeled, then you can find it. I was driven _insane_ by what went down in this ep, it's just so awesome. There's some things of particular note relating to Belos that you missed- he yelled "CALEB" when he saw Flapjack, revealing the name of Hunter's progenitor; Gus viewed his memories at one point; and a bit of his slime landed on Hunter when they were running through the gateway.

Yeah, Raine was being a lot more overt about their rebellion, so Darius and Eber had to make a big scene about bringing them in to both enforce their own cover and help Raine avoid _actually_ being killed or mind controlled. Bringing them into the fold and letting the others think Raine had gone off the rails but was under Terra's influence now was the best way to keep them active and strengthen the collective force.

Honestly, because it was cancelled after season 1, but before season 2 was finished being *written*, they were forced to ramp up and condense, which is why it became such a wild ride. The fact that it got the next three episodes to wrap the show up and did so well with what little it had remaining is just fascinating and fantastic. It wouldn't be the same if it hadn't been cancelled, but at the same time, I still would have liked to have it end up with at least three full seasons, isntead of sped up, just to see what the original vision might have been. I probably would have preferred it as it is, but it just makes me so curious.
