Thanks for covering the issue about the support bracket. Have been eyeing the 350 APO Z lens and saw that exact same post. lol. The 360 C you have is ~1.2kg, the 350 APO Z is ~1.5kg, which both supposedly require the bracket. But the 250 APO Z is 1.4kg and doesn't. Will give it a go and if it feels too squishy, i'll figure something out. lol. Will most likely be using it at far or infinity focus most of the time anyway (aka minimal bellow extension). I imagine the bracket is there to allow full safety margins for all the extra accessories and whatnot you can attach (like both extension tubes and other accessories, which would make it very front-heavy and prob would require the bracket).

@@willysheepskin I had the 500mm EII F8 ETR version. It was comical - it had a giant case just as yours does, and must have weighed at least 8lbs, 3-4 kg. It had a substantial tripod collar and it was sharp wide open with no real vignette to speak of. I have an adapter that allows me to use my ETR lenses on my Canon digital, so I used it on that too. I find that really useful for evaluating older lenses without burning film - in fact, I consider that essential. It makes it so much easier to determine if a lens has a problem or not. It also allows you to compare them head to head in real time - that's how I determined the 250 + 1.4tc was sufficient for my needs. Cheers and keep up the great work 👍

Great shakedown on this lens William. I especially appreciate the side by side views of the different lenses often compared to it AND weighing 360/250. That was a particularly helpful visual. I do have one question, about metering, on the skyline shots. Did you meter the sky and city and split the difference? Reflected metering? Honestly like to you know. That can be a tricky situation 🤷🏽‍♂️. Thanks again!!!!!!
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Justin! Glad you found the comparisons useful! On the metering front, when it comes to metering big scenes like that I kind of guesstimate exposure based on what feels right. I did meter directly for the city as best I could without a spot meter though, I knew the sky wasn't going to blow out even if I metered for the shadows because of how dim the light still was and how great Portra is! Thanks again to you for stopping by!

I actually stumbled upon that forum post a while ago and felt like the poster was a bit too dramatical about the impact on the rails, but I'm still wondering if the 100-200 sekor Zoom will damage the mamiya, it's extremely heavy but since it has it's focusing ring on the lens and doesn't need to be bellow-focused, I feel like it shouldn't be a problem since the bellows aren't extended, do you know anything about that? Btw nice video!

Your reputation has started preceding you. ;) Very nice analysis and comparison of alternatives. Thanks. One thing about the weight comparison: how much more front heavy is the 360mm than the 250mm? I don't think it will make a huge difference considering how close they are in overall weight and size, but I'd wager that the 360mm carries a lot of its weight towards the front and that may be what motivated Mamiya to release a support bracket for it.
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 3 жыл бұрын
Ahah cheers Ben! It actually felt decently heavier towards the back than the front, from what I can tell the bracket was an optional extra for when one wanted peak stability when using the lens as opposed to being necessary to prevent damage

I do love that hat and will have to figure out how to get one. The 360 is a great looking lens and I love the portraits you took with it even though I'm more of a landscape guy. The extra working distance with the 360 could come in handy but I'm wondering were you both in the same time zone? It sure looked like you were way outside while he was just inside in those first couple of shots. Also how do you differentiate between the older and newer versions of the 360
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 3 жыл бұрын
Ahaha we were barely in the same time zone! Glad you like the portraits Bob, I was about 4.5 meters away for the first one and the close crop was pretty much exactly 4 meters to test the minimum focus of the lens, the focus is actually thrown onto his farther back eye because I got a bit too close! The oldest RB67 lenses tend to have that fluted shape, and will be labeled Sekor instead of Sekor C on the lens lip, with the 360 I think the Sekor and Sekor C are the same shape but the C will have a green C next to the Sekor marking on the lip. I think the K/L version is a 350mm instead of 360mm, but it definitely doesn't have that classic fluted shape!

okay. so weighing both lenses and seeing that they don't differ much in mass is not the entire story. It is the torque that counts, meaning mass multiplied by distance. There is a difference in length, so a difference in the distence of the center of gravity of the lens to the camera body. As you will remember from sitting in the middle or at the end of a seesaw, this distance matters a lot.
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 3 жыл бұрын
Ah interesting insight! Most of the weight on the 360 seemed to sit at the back of the lens rather than the front though whereas the 250 feels even throughout, the 360 is also only marginally longer than the 250 too, it didn’t really feel dangerous at any point. Cheers Andre!

Hello William, I currently have a RB67 but am finding that it might not be for me. So I'm interested in the Mamiya 645 due to the cheaper overall cost and other features. Would you say the 645 is a nice camera to use? In terms of ergonomics mostly, and other noteworthy differences.
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 3 жыл бұрын
The 645 is very nice! I really enjoy it ergonomically, I'd get one of the later models with interchangeable backs like a pro/pro tl cus' being able to switch backs is a really great feature that I missed on my older 645 when I had it.
@cheteu7968

Hi Will, i would like to buy a grip for my RB67 but they are so expensive! Which one would you recommend? The version designed for the M645 is a lot cheaper but i am confused if it will hold my RB67 and if there will be enough space between the RB and my hand. What would you recommend?
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 3 жыл бұрын
Ahoy! I reckon the RB specific one is probably best unfortunately, the RB has two slots for pins in the body to the sides of the tripod mount where most gear designed to sit securely in it will have pins that slot in. If you use a M645 one it probably wouldn't have those pins would be thinner and thus wouldn't be very secure, and I'm also not sure that there would be enough space. An alternative grip strategy might be to get a Metz like flash with a handle, they can be cheaper than proper RB gribs and are robust enough to hold things in place decently even without the pins!

I have the 250mm and I thought “my god this thing is HUGE”, then I see a video saying that a 360 exists so I went looking for that and this video says ‘second biggest” and I’m like SECOND!? How big does it go…oh my god there’s a 500. It looks like a missile launcher. Dear god that thing must weigh 20 lbs. Anyway, off to watch that video now…

Ahaha it'd probably be somewhat more manageable than the 500mm but still too much to take up there, maybe on a microlight or something though lol!

I wish you didn't use that black cloth, so that we could see the background, the DoF, etc... :(
