How did Hungary become communist in 1949? After the Second World War Hungary fell in the Soviet sphere of influence. Yet, it wasn't a communist state right away. From 1946 till 1949 there was the Second Hungarian Republic (Magyar Köztársaság). A short-lived state that would find its demise at the hands of the Hungarian communists and was replaced by the Hungarian People's Republic (Magyar Népköztársaság).

Excellent presentation professor! I come from Hungary and there would be some more interesting things. During the election of 1945 the soviet forces supported the hungarian communist party but they still lost and Rákosi promised Stalin that he is going to win the election. The election in 1947 was the bluue ballot election (kékcédulás választás). The communists committed electoral fraud. Their people voted with blue ballots in several places. Before the election, Prime Minister Francis Nagy was resigned while on holiday in Switzerland. He and his child were blackmailed to resign. In 1948, the Communists and Social Democrats founded the Hungarian Workers' Party. The Social Democrats were forced to do so.

Very good tone and expression for the narrative, some of the other ones I have seen even with a human narrator, talked extreamly slow, or monotone and with no expression and it was hard to listen too. You have done this in a very good natural tone, aside from all of the helpful information. It is interesting to listen to because you make it both clear but with some expression.

Excellent stuff as always👌 Just a little correction for the intro 1. Zoltán Tildy became prime minister after the election in november 1945. The provisional prime minister was Béla Miklós from late december 1944. 2. Only about half of Hungary's German population was expelled after the war. The government didnt want to use the collective guilt against Germans, only against fascist Germans, tho Voroshilov wanted to expell all of the Germans. Before the ww2 about 500.000 Germans lived in Hungary (withing trianon borders) and about 220.000 were expelled between 1946-1947, and some ten thousands were evacuated by the SS during the end of war.

On 22 December 1945, the Ministerial Council adopted the resolution of Imre Nagy, Minister of the Interior, which *was based* on the principle of collective guilt (opposed by independent ministers, and those of the Social Democratic Party and the Smallholders’ Party) (Tóth, 1995). The prime ministerial decree M. E. 12330/1945, regulating the resettlement of the German population of Hungary in Germany, was issued on 29 December 1945. The scope of this law encompassed those who declared themselves to be of German nationality or of German mother tongue at the 1941 census; those who changed their already Magyarized name to German; and former members of the Volksbund and the SS. A later resolution provided for those who had been resettled to be stripped of their Hungarian citizenship. The resettlement process started in January 1946 and ended in 1948.

@@gibraltersteamboatco888 You are right about, that the resolution was adopted and it really was based on the principle of collective guilt. This principle was forced by the Allied Commission through marshall Voroshilov, and the Hungarian communist politicians, like Imre Nagy, supported the idea. Plus, the idea of the Czechoslovak-Hungarian population exchange came up, and they wanted to "make room" for the Hungarians to be expelled from Slovakia. But the provisional government never wanted such thing. At first, they wanted to expell the Germans, who declared themselves as German nationality (about 300 thousand people), but later the number was reduced to 250 thousand and to 200 thousand. The resolution, that you mentioned, was relieved somewhat in august 1946. Plus, the catholic church protested heavily against the expellation. The essence is, that only about half of the Germans were expelled from Hungary, not like in the neighboor countries like Czechoslovakia or Yugoslavia.
