My heart is always connected to Hungary, and I am Polish. They deserved more freedom from the repressive Soviets, just like us 🇵🇱🇭🇺🇵🇱🇭🇺🇵🇱🇭🇺

I was 10 in summer of '79 when we visited Budapest, one of the nicest cities from my childhood travels - there were still bullet holes from 1956. Then I was there year later just as strikes started in Poland. The Magyar people were very nice to us unlike the rest of the Eastern Block, which followed the Russians propaganda. Also while we stayed at one of camping grounds in Buda, a Dutch man helped us to rent a cottage house - I think he even payed for some of it, thanks whoever you are.

In addition: Frasisco Franco prepared spanish volunteers and was ready to help the revolution, but USA put pressure on Spain, not to do so to avoid global conflict.

A very important mistake! It was not the protesters who fired at the communists. It was the local communists who fired at the croud and after this did the protesters get weapons and shot back.

The Soviets waited a few days with invading because they feared intervention of western NATO countries. When this didn't happen they felt safe to reinvade.

Poland refused to participate in this intervention because of the eternal Polish-Hungarian friendship. One of the few morally correct behaviors of Polish communist governments

You're welcome. Although Budapest had been severely damaged after WW2 it's a beautiful city. Other Central and Eastern European cities were not that lucky and feel much more soviet like Warsaw, Minsk and Kiev. Still worth visiting though.

@@HistoryHustle Americans + Soviets = post WW2 paradise (sarcasm). The Americans, as the British, didn't care if the Soviets took over eastern Europe. The Soviets, of course, would openly massacre people for the fun of it.

0:14 That Soviet victory memorial sits directly across the street from the USA embassy (To your left)...on purpose of course. Anytime Putin visits Budapest he makes it a point to drive by it to make sure that it is still there and maintained. There was talk of moving it and/or dismantling it but Putin insisted that it be left alone.

He was in a prisoners camp in Russia for 3 years, but not treated badly, local population gave the prisoners extra food in 1948 he was released and returned to Hungary. Our family fled to Netherlands in November 1956 after the reoccupation by the Russians.

It was not the very same day, the 3rd Hungarian Republic (which is actually fourth) was declared on October 23rd, 1989, while the Berlin Wall was falled in november 7th. The houses are tabby with bullet impacts. Plus, the the brits stole a T-54 tank with the agree of Pál Maléter. So the Ordanance L7 was came from this event.
