God can I just say how furious I am that Oversimplified didn't exist when I was in school. And follow up channels like VTH that pause, break it down, look things up, add context and clarity. @@sirfallsalot2000 The 3rd Punic war was over before it began. Even though the siege of Carthage took quite a while, Carthage was done for as soon as the war started. They had 0 chance. And the thrid war was absolutly uncalled for. Carthage did absolutly nothing wrong, they fullfilled everything that was required of them in the peace treaty after the second war. They paid reparations, they provided sailors for the Roman navy... @@proximitive3872 Carthadge didn't really stand a chance against rome during the second punic war, the only reason it seemed like it was was because Hannibal was an outsanding general on par with the likes of Napoleon. At this point Rome was just too big, too populace and too hard headed to be beaten by carthage. The battle of Cannine was dissastrious for not only Rome but Hannibal too as it drained all of his manpower and recourses, his defeat was inevatable at that point. I have to commend Hanibal for being able wage on 20 years of geurrila warfare in Italia but his efforts were probably better suited for taking over the Middle-east or something, as that could strengthen carthage enough for a future punic war.

@blauwbeer556 3 ай бұрын
@@namastehindustan9879 I don't want to come off as rude but if you watched the Oversimplified videos you'll notice that going through the Alps may as well be a battle of Cannine for Hannibal. He lost 75% of his army and only had like ~80 elephants left. Trying to go back *through the Alps* would be just as catastrophic, and that's assuming he can get even get there. By this point most of Roman Italia was completly Romanized with only the northern and southern part feeling resentment against the regime meaning that Hannibal can't recruit that many locals to their side and worse: everybody is an enemy. Again, his army was completly depleted after Cannine. Getting to the Alps through hostile lands would be a massive challange on its own, and then going through the Alps? It would be impossible, i'd be surprised if Hannibal himself would survive that journey, let alone a not useless army. Getting to Italia from the alps is like preforming an amphibious invasion and then burning the ships down so that there would be no escape, there was no turning back an Hannibal knew that. This is why he resorted to guerrila warfare for the next 20 years instead of leaving, at least with geurrila warfare he can also harm Rome whilst leaving would *only* hurt himself.

7:50 There's a reason why the famed economist John Maynard Keynes called the Treaty of Versailles reparations imposed on Germany after World War One the "Carthaginian Peace" way back in 1919. It ended up enraging a powerful country that, in response to its own humiliation, saw the rise of highly capable and vengeful military leaders and the emergence of another major war.

@@David-sl6xf Germany's economic woes came from the way the Germans funded ww1, in essence they cannibalized their own economy and would have suffered huge economic issues even if they had won. One of the reasons they refused to concede to a compromise in the war was that they NEEDED French reparations' to save their collapsing economy, which in turn made the war last longer, which in turn made them need those reparations' even more. By the end of the war communist uprisings were occurring all over the country largely due to the non-existent economy (as well as widespread famine). Given how this episode starts I feel obligated to quote Machiavelli's take on mercenaries "I say, therefore, that the arms with which a prince defends his state are either his own, or they are mercenaries, auxiliaries, or mixed. Mercenaries and auxiliaries are useless and dangerous; and if one holds his state based on these arms, he will stand neither firm nor safe; for they are disunited, ambitious and without discipline, unfaithful, valiant before friends, cowardly before enemies; they have neither the fear of God nor fidelity to men, and destruction is deferred only so long as the attack is; for in peace one is robbed by them, and in war by the enemy. The fact is, they have no other attraction or reason for keeping the field than a trifle of stipend, which is not sufficient to make them willing to die for you".

The Catan easter egg is actually an amazing tribute to the late Klaus Teuber, the game's designer. He got into board games when he was a kid because he was given a war game about Rome & Carthage. Just like his son would years later, Hamilcar was arguably doing the best in the First Punic War, waging a guerrilla campaign against occupying Romans, but he was caled back upon Carthage's surrender, which made him pretty angry....leading to everything that would come after.

Napoleon encountered a similar issue when crossing the alps. The italian side of the passes is generally steeper than the french side making the descent treacherous, especially for heavy equipment and baggage.

I would still say the Cuban Revolution was crazier. Castro took over the country with 200-300 men against a force 37,000 with modern equipment and unlike someone like Hannibal, he didn’t do it sound military tactics.

12:20 When Hannibal's brother was made governor of Spain he started to mint coins in Spain with his image in the style of a Hellenistic king, wearing a diadem. Normally Carthaginian coinage only featured gods and symbols. Kinda puts into perspective why Carthage was so reluctant to support the Barcid war effort.

I won’t lie I immediately thought of this channel when I saw the original video had come out. But in all seriousness Hannibal is my favorite historical General and his campaign toward Rome is what got me into being a history nerd. Favorite generals are always going to be Hannibal, Napoleon, Alexander, and Julius Caesar.

Sorry but the Scipio that marched his legions towards Spain in this episode is not the famous Scipio Africanus who would later defeat Hannibal at the battle of Zama. It was his father

It’s crazy how I went from knowing essentially nothing about the Punic wars to finding these possibly the most fascinating war stories in all of the known history thanks to oversimplified. Btw good clarification about the celts, I was def confused how they seemed to be everywhere in Europe.
