No way was that not deliberate. The shading is just on his face; a cloud would shade his body and the person next to him as well. The scene is almost certainly artificially lit and the shading is done by dimming or re-angling a light that is illuminating the actor's face.

Absolutely adore the triple meaning of the title - "the second" as in someone's dueling second, "the second" as in someone's descendant, and "the second" as in the split second in a duel where it can all go wrong. Amazing short!!

I'm not sure if all shots are of the same duel either.. Like maybe it's the story of two duels. In one, the son has slicked back straight hair. In the other he's got wavy hair let down on his sides. Maybe one part of this is the father's duel and he basically went through the same exact thing only with HIS father so it's like a cycle. Or maybe it's mixed and the father feels like he's talking to himself in the past.

I have seen so many KZbinrs here who have spoken, analyzed, and gave their insight into the art of filmmaking. They spoke/made videos about Screenwriting, Kubrick, Speilberg, The cinematography of Rodger Deakins, and etc. Then they made their first short-film or even their first feature. Taylor, this is the first time I have ever seen a Director that has truly learned from what he was preaching. This is a wonderful film, your storytelling was intentional, your shots were carefully chosen to communicate every feeling and I’m just very happy to have seen this and it existing. Thank you for making this story come to life, I only wish I was a producer to support your next story financially, the best I can do for now is congrats and don’t stop.

After seeing this, I can't help but think of my own father, who died 9 years ago now, and how he stood by me, even though he knew some of my decisions were dumb. How he must've looked back on his life, and said, "I guess I can't stop him... he has to learn the hard way, just like I did." But he stood by me, all the same. I guess that's just a realization that comes to you with age...

What an admirable piece of work! Seeing all the essays come to life in a short film like this. The dilemma faced by the son, living in his father's shadow but wanting to make his own decisions; and the father still wanting to make the decisions for him, still seeing him as a child. Very well constructed for a 16-minute short film. An incredibly meaningful universe. Congratulations to all

I have a younger brother and sister that I'm close with and I often find myself talking to their different ages in my mind, our little fights bringing me back to those moments, to the people I imagine I am talking to. In some ways I feel like for those we have known for decades, we can't help but talk to past versions of them, old conversations and wounds playing out with deep emotion even when the present conversation has little real consequence. I lost my dad when I was 13, and there is something strange about when someone dies in your life that this made me reflect on. In my memory he is always the age he died at, I can't see him any other way, but there's something about that final shot that speaks to how I felt and still feel following his passing. The dad being able to continually look to the face of his son, and see how he may want to see him, or can't help but see him, the continually fluid relationship of memories and who his son is becoming is disorienting. Following the shot, alone in the field, he can only see his son by some distant proxy, the branches above him, the gun by his side and his hand lying empty. And his body is now only something truly separate. The image in my mind of my dad following his death is notably vague, fuzzy, and distant. it's difficult to really hold onto anything tangible, and watching Paul look down at his son but not be able to his face in focus anymore hit so hard. Without him here anymore it was like I could talk to him and my memories of him. All the moments kind of moved and intersected together as we talked and with him gone there's no conversation left. The memories can't move, and I can't really feel them in the same way. Anyway congrats Taylor and Tony, you both made something really special

I've experienced something similar with living away from my family, especially my parents. There is a certain version of them in my head that seems to be a mixture of how I saw them as I grew up. It's like it's always moving. And then a few months roll by and I see them again and it always strikes me how much older they are than who I see in my head. It's always strikes me a little off balance, and I'm always reminded of how little time I likely have with them both.

Im blown away by the film. it feels like the culmination of all the learning and knowledge this channel has provided and how i could pick up each of those things that Tony and Taylor have talked about. While im not a father myself, i imagine if i was this would hit too close to home. Things like duelling remind us why we moved passed these practices, because young people will make mistakes, and they should get to live and learn from them. But for the father he tried his best to hold the reigns in the relationship with his son and ultimately failed his son when he needed him the most as well. They both died on the field that day.

This is essentially modern (but also not modern, since it's using anachronistic methods) _seppuku,_ assuming he _did_ in fact purposefully drop his gun rather than shoot. He effectively killed himself rather than be humiliated online. It's too bad that we never learn what his transgression was, even though it's obvious that was the author's intent.

@thunderbandit5172
@thunderbandit5172 9 күн бұрын
I don't know if he meant to let himself be killed though. My interpretation of the scene is that he chose mercy and forgiveness when he realized how scared his opponent was.He dropped his weapon and he probably expected the other guy to do the same. I don't think he thought his opponent was going to fire. The other guy overacted. Not seppuku in my opinion, but a mistake on the other guys part that led to a needless death. I really liked this a lot more than I thought I would. The beginning has some cool editing but was a little slow. When the classical music starts is when I realized things were going to get interesting. It was cool that both the son and the father are flawed characters. Danny could have apologized but he didn't want to give up anything. Which is unreasonable and stupid. The recording and live streaming requirement was excessive not going to lie. But also, if your son is in a duel how da fuq do you tell him to throw the shot? Seriously dude, this was life and death. He might've regretted his decision but at least he would be alive. Now what do you have? A nice house and a nice car and no one to share it with 🤷

This was a great concept and nicely shot. But the dialogue felt a bit unnatural. Hard to say whether it was because of the script or not, but the performances came across student short film-y too. Sorry if thats harsh, I think it was overall a good short, a lot of positives. I think youtubers with a big following who then release their own shorts are in a strange position where the fanbase will skew towards praise, regardless of how good the short is. But it can maybe be inhibitive to the filmmakers growth. And as I say theres definitely good stuff here, I would just definitely have a look at the dialogue as the next thing to improve on.

It's so interesting to see a person as something else. I've seen my father as a huge authoritative figure, while also seen him as a small man. And as my ego gets bigger, the smaller he seems. While I can acknowledge it intellectually, it's hard to handle my emotions. While my admiration for him gets bigger due to the feats he had achieved despite his limitations, I can't help but to feel sorry, concerned, and even guilty for him, for how much the small man needed to put on his back to raise me. If he has a curved back, I would use it as a metaphor. But fortunately, he can still stand straight on his own two feet.

I'm not surprised by how amazing the cinematography and audio-visual atmosphere is, that's most of what this channel has taught me. And most of the comments are already singing this short film's deserved praise. So I want to focus on the one weakness I found a little bit. The dialogues. I can tell on paper the script is amazing, however the delivery felt oddly directed. Some actors were better at pauses then others, the main actor (the old man) is just so amazing with his body and facial language, but his lines have this sort of instant and knowing delivery, which doesn't fit the lingering doubt of most of the scenes. I don't know if the short film had a run time limit, but I wish silence was allowed to linger more often. I would also like to see this channel tackle that part of filmmaking in his essays in the future too. Audio-visual gets a lot of focus, but solely audio and dialogue? I think there's a lot to dig in.

If I hadn't read the description first, it would have been a clear reminder that we aren't fully removed from our normal timeline, save for this ritual. I love this. Father has to reckon with the fact that his adherence to tradition has contributed to building an unjust world that rewards people of low honor, and punishes people like his son who are just wired differently. Son was throwing his shot, cowardly opp took advantage, and that's perfectly within the "rules" of this society. Father just wants the best for his son, wishes his son could learn to cope the same way he did.... but at the same time, knows he shouldn't have to. If he had made different choices, less compromises in his own life, maybe his son wouldn't have had to make this one.

That was really beautiful. I feel like there was potentially some authentic commentary on honor culture, social media, and being too young to understand life. Or, at least, it resonated with my experiences with those topics. So thank you.

This is everything I would have hoped for from a movie by the best channel on film on KZbin. Clearly, though, we now need a follow-up video or series on sound design and sound editing in film, because those were both of peerless quality here.

Great stuff and brilliantly executed! I find it very relatable. Everything my father projected onto me. How I didn't live up to the expectations and was destined for failure. Coincidentally enough, I became a storyboard artist and moved to Vancouver.

I'm just not sure why the opponent needed two men with him, making the audience unsure of which one was the opponent until the duel. Yes, he was wearing a blue suit, but you couldn't be sure. Still, it was a very good short film. The performances were exceptional, and the choices of shot and edit were excellent. It was very moving.

To elaborate on showing his character, to give the offender the appearance that he does not take this duel seriously, he’s just goofy chatting with his buddies over a trivial slight. And it gives the contrast to how alone his son is in comparison, who only has his father, who he looks up to but feels he is a disappointing failure, especially since he thinks his father is taking their side over his. No one is taking him seriously at how much this slight means to him, not even his father.
@sirmidor

Yeah, the son's description of the opponent was really weird. A normal person would've just said 'the one in the middle' (of the group) or 'the black guy'.

I am sure I will get a lot of flak for this, and a bunch of "you do better" comments, but I liked this up until the ending. The title basically gave it away, and it was telegraphed so much that it simply did not have any real punch. No matter how good the narrative, the ending makes or breaks a story. It broke it in this case. A better ending? I would have written it so that the son threw away the gun as presented, and the opponent simply dropped his in response. So why is this better in my opinion? The whole narrative is about the son following a path he doesn't agree with and trying to live up to his father's legacy. The father, on the other hand, doesn't want his son to follow this legacy, to break away and become his own person. That whisper in the son's ear is the tipping point, and by throwing away the gun, the son takes that step to becoming his own man. His opponent doesn't want a duel; that much is obvious, considering the negotiation and the actions on the field, so having a way out is perfectly acceptable in this context. This outcome would do justice to the narrative that was cheated in the actual ending.

Nice solution! It does seem unnecessary for him to die after taking the decision to not duel. I would have made the son shoot the ground as he has only one shot avilable (the man in charge explained this rule so I thought it was going to be used) then the opponent not wanting a duel would follow through and shoot to the gruond also. The film ends father and son looking at each other maybe a smile on his father's side. Also make the son good at shooting in the first act so we know he would have won the duel if necessary.

Some cool ideas ! For future reference, there were some minor issues regarding things such as eye-line (like in shot 3:03 when he gets out of the car, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee isn't tracking anyone and you can tell by the way his eyes move) but otherwise it's well made and I can't wait to see you improve in the future !

Every father once forget about how old is their kid's age and the time gap between them, especially in facing the kid's decision making and its consequence. What a deep visual telling, it'll be much different if it is performed by pro actors. Wellcome back.

This was really good - beautifully shot and edited, well-acted, the climax hits well (even though you know what's coming), and the age-change works way better than I expected. There were a few choices I thought didn't work as well, though, and kept this back from being great (the edit at :38, while cool, didn't serve a clear purpose or fit the style and mostly confused me; the dad caving to his son so quickly - and not mentioning his own regret until way too late - felt out of place; and a few smaller moments, like the "bit my nails until they bled" delivery being a bit too casual). Still though, this was a really good first film - I'll be excited to see what you do next!

I had to take this film to my TV. Usually I watch these wonderful essays on my phone, but for Tony I had to give his short the treatment. Very good film. Loved the reference to Barry Lyndon (possibly my favorite Kubrick film), and thought you really made it your own. As soon as I finished the short film I watched the commentary. I really, really enjoyed it. I also loved the shots of the tree canopies. Very Kurosawa. Excellent job.

It's a very different thing watching, studying, and internalizing movies, and putting your own ideas into practice. I know this because I made my first feature recently and it was the same case; there are so many things that go into making a movie on the actual shooting of that makes you course-correct. For. Every. Single. Instance. If I were cruel, I'd say this actually uses a lot of the tropes that this channel critiqued in the past and is mildly underwhelming as a result. I will say this was an "okay" effort, though, and I am envious of your resources.
