I live in a high agriculture area. Only immigrants want to do the work. If put tariffs on foods coming into the country and deport the immigrants working in agriculture here it will make food costs go through the roof. Trump is basically calling for a double hit on the already high cost of food with these policies. Under Trump food costs will not be high, they will be unaffordable. They don't really punish anyone but the consumer in the country that applies the tariff - at least, not directly. It just raises the price, which *might* reduce demand. Maybe. If properly targeted. Blanket tariffs are definitely NOT targeted, and so hit things that America can't do without and can't adequately produce itself. One example: The US has next to no commercially viable deposits of aluminum. It has to buy 99% of what it uses. Half of that comes from Canada. So what possible benefit does it create by slapping a 25% tariff on it? Other than to pi$$ off Canada, that is. And what does the US do if Canada simply bans exports of aluminum to the US? Assuming any other suppliers would even want to do business with you after seeing what you did to us, it would take months for them to ramp up production and shipping, to start filling that gap. So really, who are you punishing here, other than yourselves?

Let’s start calling tariffs “federal sales tax” because that’s what they are. Actually tariffs are may be more like European VAT (value added tax) where each step towards a finished good is taxed and then passed on to the end user. The tariffs work similarly because the components of finished goods made in the US will be tariffed, raising the price of the goods, then the goods will be sales taxed when they are bought by the end user. Double tax. You’ll be paying sales tax on the parts which are federally taxed.

Regulation is done with purpose. Safety, environment, fairness, oversight, etc. There are reasons WHY they are there, and companies obviously do not like laws that force them to be fair, safe, protect the environment, and report their records to avoid gouging, cheating, and costing the avg consumer more. WHY? because they can squeeze more profit for their shareholder...NEVER...REPEAT NEVER for the consumer. Let me say that again....NEVER, NEVER, NEVER to save the consumer more....only to profit the shareholders. To deregulate, the only thing accomplished is that the general populous is cheated out of something.

He told his supporters "I don't care about you. I just want your vote." Does anyone believe these voters are interested in a detailed analysis of his harmful policies? Or what a tariff is? One aspect of tariffs' impact on the cost of goods is not discussed enough: the theory is that tariffs will bring jobs back to the U.S. because the imported goods will have become more expensive, making domestically produced goods more cost competitive. The reason so many factory jobs have gone overseas is to take advantage of cheaper labor. Bringing them back will inherently cost more because of higher labor costs for American workers. Also, it's not like were sitting here with a bunch of idle factories just waiting to go back into production. Even if there is a desire to go back to producing certain products again, it would take years for factories to be rehabbed (or even rebuilt) and to hire and train the necessary workers.
