excellent discussion of some doubles tactics, and i've not seen anything like it before on youtube. the importance of forcing your opponents to strike the shuttle below the tape applies just as much to the 2nd shot (and almost every shot) in doubles play. the thing about the 3rd shot is that in men's doubles that is where most points are very likely to be scored. in other words, if your serve is 'over and in' and your reply to their return forces your opponents to strike below the tape, that is usually all she wrote for that point. if the rally does continue, the tactics expand but the core idea being taught in this video does not really change. in singles you play 4 corners. in doubles you play above and below the tape. practice the discipline of forcing your opponents to strike the shuttle below the tape, be relentless in this discipline and you'll find all kinds of openings for winners even against the strongest players

Super nice explanation! Sounds simple but requires a ton of practice ☺️

If the server tells their partner "ill cover the straight" What shots exactly would the server cover for the third shot? Whos shot is the cross net? Whos shot is the straight lift? Does "ill cover the straight" only refer to the "straight pushes"?

If covering the straight one, you must assume your partner mainly focuses on the straight one shot+mid court. If it is pushed to the back, likely the player behind still needs to be alert. The cross-ones are also covered by the one behind, except the short cross-court, the is for the serving player. A bit tricky to explain and yea, sometimes doing these arrangements with your partner can make the two of you look like a fool if the opponent finds that gap you’re not covering. However, perhaps that happens 2 times of our 10, while succeeding in this is 8 times of 10. If that was the math, it’s a good trade off ☺️

This only works when you are really close with the person you play with, else people don't really talk to each other
