Enjoyed that Sandy. My grand father related a story to me about how the single-copy maps detailing bunker and arms cache locations were lost when Churchill , during a weekend at Chequers, dozed off after a particularly heavy session on the Scotch/Brandy and dropped his lit cigar into his brief case. Legend had it that the lot, printed on 'flimsy' easy burn paper (probably rice paper) all went up in smoke. After that no-one really knew where most of the bunkers were located, apart from the dispersed Operatives, who were meant to remain incognito. Grandad always said he knew where one or more such bunkers were , and several of his old mates up the 'allotments' always agreed with him . Those tales were wondrous to a lad of about 7 or 8 years of age. It took me years to realise I knew about bits of this stuff from 'owld Johnny's' , (and his mates), reminiscing and story-telling long before I saw it in a documentary or read about it in history books. Great vid... Reminded me of some memories from long ago.

Absolutely love this video...an important part of our history that should be remembered and on our doorsteps too. Mine was Chislehurst Caves...those that didn't have an Anderson shelter paid to stay in little paritioned bunks until after an air raid. My great nan, nan and dad (he was a year old then) stayed there. Makes you wonder how many more places have hidden secrets nearby doesn't it mate

Yet again Sandy another brilliant variation on what you do on here. I only found out about this a few years ago and how a chap called Charlie Mason who taxied us to primary school was so involved in our local area. We had the Hull to Barnsley Railway running through the farm we lived on but during the war years Charlie and his chums were ( if needed) to wreak havoc in this area. I think there is a book that mentions this based on the channel 4 series from a few years back. Once again Sandy many thanks for bringing this to our attention. ATB Ian T

This was very interesting! I had no idea there were such contingency plans in place and I read a lot of historical books on WW2 my grandfather used to have. Then again, he was an avid builder of historical airplane models and fascinated with (and proud of) Czech pilots serving in the ranks of RAF during the Battle of Britain so his books tended to be focused on that aspect. Thanks for covering this topic 👍

We had the Home guard here Vojta but the Auxiliers were never know about til later. It was Top Secret. The men were trained in small groups and were not told details about other units for fear that they could give info away if taken captive.

@WiltshireMan5 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed Terry. The Auxiliars were the last line of defense. They were trained in groups of 6 to 8 men and often didn't know of any other groups close by, so if ever one was captured they could not give the others away.

Fascinating tour Sandy. I wonder how many more secret bunkers have been sealed up ready to be discovered? A fair few no doubt. Good answer on the bed. All the best. Mark
@WiltshireMan5 жыл бұрын
I bet there are a few bunkers still hidden Mark and if they find them there is a chance they will have a stock of mouldering munitions. These men were trained in small batches of 6 to 8 and often were unaware of other units. This was so that if they were ever taken captive, they couldn't give others away. If ever we had been invaded these men would have had an awful task on their hands. The sad thing is that some if not many ordinary folk may have seen them as cowards as they didn't go oversea's to fight, and ofcourse they simply couldn't say a thing about what they were about. It was a deadly serious business. Cometh the hour, cometh the Men..The Auxiliers.....

Those guys were amazing, genuine unsung heroes, they never spoke about what they were prepared to do if the worst came to it, so much so that they died taking this history to the grave with them. ....... It is only recently that it came to light in the public eye that this organisation and these guys even existed, so it is brilliant that they are now being recognised. Families of these guys have been amazed to learn that their quiet unassuming fathers and grandfathers were part of this and they all say the same thing... they maintained their silence over this for the rest of their entire lives. this stoicism is truly humbling, they were prepared to sacrifice themselves and no-one would know, and they never claimed the credit. .....no glory, no fame, no ego.....
