you need better sources. Bertholdi wanted to build a mammoth statue for the opening of the Suez canal, and it was of a woman dressed like an Egyptian peasant, but Egypt went broke so it was never built. He persuaded France to give a statue made by him to US for the Centennial. Both Americans and France paid for it. He used his original concept, but changed it to look Greco-Roman like other US government buildings. Without the artist's own persistence, it would never have been built.

As someone who was raised roman catholic, I'm really disturbed by some of the comments from other Christians here. We were raised on the teachings of the Bible and there is no way Jesus would condone the way some of ya'll treat Muslims and the vile things you say to them. They are overwhelmingly loving and kind people. Don't judge an entire group of people based on the actions of a few. Sure, some of the 'facts' in this video are not accurate. Nobody really knows who the model of Lady Liberty was and Mahomet IL is definitely not named after the Prophet, but that doesn't mean the Muslims have not been an intergral part of America from the very beginning; they have worked tirelessly through the generations to contribute to the country, that you are currently enjoying. If you currently hate Muslims, you need to look yourself in the mirror, not them. They are our brothers and sisters and if you actually go out and get to know them, you'll realize that they're wonderful people. There are over two billion Muslims in the world and if they were all terrorists, the world would have been destroyed 3 times over. So please, take a chance and go meet a Muslim or learn about what Islam really is about. Bret Hart it isn't. Those who say that, both Muslims and non Muslims, are ill informed. You know what the bible says about God giving David the gift of song? That is what the quran says too. David (dawud in Arabic) is a revered figure in Islam too. You can also read about the sufi mystics (sufism is a sect of Islam) in south Asia who used to write poetry in which God is addressed as a beloved. There are plenty of sufi songs and their translations you will find online. Depending on your interpretation of those songs, they could be interpreted as love songs addressed to a human beloved. They are very moving. I could send you links to some of them, if you're interested.
