I too had a high paying job that did not make me feel happy or fulfilled. I did this for about 6 years and when I started thinking about quitting everyone told me I was crazy or making a dumb decision because, as I said, the money was good. I did not listen and quit anyway. For the next two years I dedicated myself to finding my purpose where I turned down numerous "high paying" jobs along the way because they didn't seem to fit for me. At the time, I did not know it was "Ikigai" but using similar criteria I determined that I think my purpose is to become a Teacher. So that is what I am going to do :)

Sweet. This is weirdly similar to me; I’m in a high paying job for 6 years now and am very close to pulling the plug. I know I am unlikely to earn this money ever again if I change my jobs and retrain in something more fulfilling. It is so hard to turn down that monthly pay check in this capitalist world. But the truth is I am miserable in my work and have been for years. And it’s getting worse. And I’m getting older. It’s time for change

I have over 20years of working experience, I am in my 40's now. Here are my thoughts on this subject. Instead of taking the path less travelled, we need to take the path that works for us. For me, it is the middle path. I used to hate my job, short deadlines, dreadful politics, toxic people, horrible boss/colelagues/etc. It did cross my mind that I should just do what I love and quit my job entirely. I thought that all jobs are the same. But at the same time, I also felt that no matter what, there is no heavenly path. Instead, I took the middle ground, I found a new job with less politics, better work life balance, etc. It wasn't perfect but it was better that the job that I hated. The new job also allowed me to do the stuff that I love and I realized that even doing what I love, there are challenges and it is not perfect, hence I thank my lucky stars that I still have my full time job. So life is full of challenges, find the middle ground that balances what you love and also earning a decent income. Don't act hastily on something that you might later regret or realized that it was not meant to be.

What we have to be careful about is that we assume we all have “purpose.” With that assumption, we feel like we need to have purpose or else our life is depressing and meaningless. But there is no rule that there must be a purpose. You don’t have to have some grandiose purpose. Spending good time with your friends and family, eating delicious foods and trying out different things, exercising and being healthy, all these can be your daily purpose.

I feel that. After high school i felt quite lost even though I had a set trajectory through college. This caused a lot of anxiety and that anxiety manifested into moodiness especially with my parents. After many arguments and unesasarry added stress i added into my families life i realized that this was not what i wanted. Now i feel the most purposeful being fully present in the lives of my friends and family. This does not earn money or status, but it has brought me more fullfilment then any economic or academic persuits.

that's spot on Joon Lee, thanks for raising this very important point. I still think it's worthwhile to go through the venn diagram exercise, but know it's okay and normal to find a very simple intersection where we just have to be more mindful of the small, but big happiness in life
@shaunconyers
@shaunconyers 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with Joon Lee! 'Purpose' is a heavy word, and can even put some mild pressure on you. The Ikigai concept has a lot of similarities with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, where the top of the pyramid is Self-Actualization - where one lives life to the fullest. If you don't have a purpose yet, It's okay. Your soul will signal the need for any purpose, and if you spend time looking/listening to your inner voice/soul through counseling/coaching/talking to a therapist a.k.a introspection, then you will step on the path to find your inner calling and your purpose.

I hit rock bottom in college and had 2 very influential friends at that moment. My ikigai is what I do now. Thank you for explaining. I was 40 before I started realizing that my purpose is, what my value is, what brings me JOY and happiness. All these words were a puzzle to me in the beginning, but digging deeper, answering questions, journaling a LOT (and I hate journals) I then started seeing a partern of what I really liked: What I really value is FREEDOM, Freedom to do what I want, when and where I want. Being independent. Therefore, I knew I hated working for a boss and needed my own thing! I knew then that I needed to earn money online because I wanted to travel full-time. At 40, non-technical, I had no idea where to begin, but I made it and I quit corporate. NOT overnight though, I made a plan and follwed steps so I would never be without money. Never ever take the leap of faith guys! I talk about this a lot since YT is one of my ways of sharing what I've learned as well. Take time to find your purpose and then go get it. Life is too short!

Vincent, as a single mom I've spent my life working in whatever job(s) I could find, to support myself and my four children. Now they are adults, and I've taken early retirement to pursue my dreams. Yet I've had to continue working just to keep from living in poverty. I already know my life's purpose; I teach a free workshop showing people how to write their life story, and how to add stories from other family members, to create a family legacy. Since I have no idea how to monetize my workshop, that's the next step I need to take: figuring out how to make it financially rewarding, in addition to the emotional rewards.

Thanks for this video. I will have to run through this diagram. The two places I have found comfort in the past was teaching/giving advice and creating. Lacking a formal education has held me back, slowed my progress and limited my salary but never stopped me from doing the job.

8:47 I can get answers to the individual questions. But there is no overlap.. So I'll split it up a bit. *"Do what you can get rewarded for" & "Do what you're good at"* I'll probably spend the most time working. *"Do what you love"* In my freetime I'll achieve that by riding my motorcycle & helping people. *"Do what the world needs"* I really love to help people with small things, like keeping the door open for them. Just to show I care for them, that they are loved. That's kinda helping people on a small & personal level.

It’s fine when you know your purpose but when you don’t know your purpose as you don’t know what makes you happy because as a kid other people took away the opportunities and freedoms from me to explore what I love. Then kicked me out onto the street for me to pick myself up and live which demanded I work all the time, which robs one of their time, with slow if any growth. The problem for me isn’t finding my purpose, I’m sure I’d find it if I had the time. The problem for me is finding the opportunity to explore what I love. I have only lived to survive, I haven’t lived yet, I hope to one day before I die

Now the like button is black not blue, but I subscribed to the channel because of you! It resonates with me as I’m also on the same path, finding my purpose in life. Loved your video, absolutely amazing. It's funny, I literally had to "abandon ship" from a company where I first heard the term Ikigai to actually find mine.

if the goal of having a purpose in life is to feel happiness and joy, then shouldnt that be the ultimate purpose having a sense of gratitude and being thankful, helping someone in need without expecting anything in return having a set of close friends who you know will be there for you in time of need-- that would make our lives meaningful and worth living ,Not everyone will be able to find their purpose or chase their dreams.

You need to discover Richard Koch's 80/20 book. One of the most plagiarized books people take from without giving credit to Koch. Great videos by the way. Keep it up.
