I got to tell you, Clay - as somebody who struggles with lag I've watched *a lot* of videos, spent hours with coaches, etc... this was hands-down the best tip I've discovered. It feels strange at first, for sure, but the ball absolutely flies.

Clay, I spent 30 years creating lag as you describe via hands ,wrists and arms. I was a very good ball striker and played to two hdcp. I started working with Jimmy Ballard and learned that lag and pressuring the shaft happened organically as a result of change of direction in the swing. This allowed me to focus on the big muscles rather than small ones in hands and wrist that have a tendency to choke under pressure. It is also is an additional independent move to think about. All of a sudden I had a game that was simpler, less dependent on timing and traveled as the other didn’t. Ball had a lot less spin or curve, and hit it longer and straight. Never had to worry about left side misses. When you look at the tour pros most will initiate the downswing prior to completion of the backswing.This kinetic energy naturally will create the lag and shaft load and be less dependent on flippy wrists , hands and independent arm motion. Small muscles can’t be trusted under the heat. That’s why people get the yips with chipping and putting.

I am a person who is very new to golf. Love it. I've been playing with friends who are very helpful, yet have been playing for many years. Your videos are very helpful for me. I think you're a very good teacher and I've watched many other videos at this point from different people. A lot of great ones or helpful ones. The one thing I have learned by doing this is you can be a great golfer but not that great of a teacher. I shared your videos with a friend who's been playing for 20 years and instantly said it was very helpful. Thank you. I like when you often include a slow motion side-by-side shot while you're teaching because it's very helpful. Some people just way to the very end the show that that's not nearly as helpful. Just keep doing what you're doing. Much appreciated! Thanks again!

last year, you put out a video with the best explanation of the physics of lag I've seen. It has been a tremendous help in starting the downswing. In that video you pointed out the the center of mass (near but not all the way to the clubhead) will want to swing out to be in line with the direction of the shaft.

I’ve watched 1000 tutorials on releasing early. Covered every topic from grip to weight shift to standing up… all great but not applicable to my specifics. This “delayed lag” did it for me. Literally one swing and it clicked. You’re the best, Clay!!

THANKS CLAY! Wow! This was a gamechanger for me today. Not cocking the wrists in the backswing and trying to add lag by acceleration really gave me great form today. It was only one session but I will absolutely be incorporating this into my swing. I had great earlier weight transfer, ball then turf contact, a straighter lead arm, and great finishing position on the outer left foot. And somehow this even allowed for better body rotation, maybe because I wasn't getting stalled by the arms, leaving the weight too far back, pushing the weight to the toes, or standing through impact. Wow.

Great description on the physics of lag; especially how you described the shallowing out of the downward swing plane to sharpen the lag angle. For simplicity, I just use the feeling of very loose wrists riding the rim of a wheel that turns one way on the backswing, and then the other way on the downswing. The club is just naturally swinging back and forth where the wrists just act like a loose swivel hinge attached to the turning wheel rim. Thanks for the great tips.

One of the best golf swings with lag who i tried to emulate was David Duval. He and i are about the same build and I worked hard to swing like him. I found that my clubface was square at impact and many of my shots were long and straight. I used a strong grip and had more of a body rotation back through feeling like my arms and hands were trailing behind me. Strong grip, fast hip.

Clay, do you think practicing on mats could hurt someone's game? If so, what drills do you recomend to practice on golf mats to compensate the missing feel from real grass?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to hurt your game if you practice the correct way. What you don't get off of mats is what kind of ground contact you're making unless you're hitting it way in front or behind the ball. I'd get impact stickers or foot spray powder and work on where I'm striking the ball on the face. You can also practice hitting controlled draws and fades provided you can see where the ball travels. There are also mats out there that you can attach to the top of a traditional mat to see where your club is making contact with the ground. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor

I enjoy your instrustion immensely and it has helped me get my hands in better position to get good contact, BUT my left wrist (I'm a righty) feels tension to the point of being uncomfortable at impact. Is this just because I'm not used to it yet? Or i need to stretch more?? Also where can I get that awesome Snell den bag (lol)?

You could try to strengthen your grip some and that would mitigate how much you have to bow your lead wrist to square the club. Experiment with it to see what works best for you. @thomasfraser9072
@thomasfraser9072 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Clay the last split second of releasing the lagging of the club at the shallow end of my swing has mess me up for years. As you know as the hands path goes so goes the head of your club lagging/ pulling behind our hands to the impact zone. Correct? So imagine your golf club is like a kid sitting on a swing. The grip end represents the kid; and, the head of the club represents the swing. (Bearing in mind that as one side of our body pushes with our lead hand, shoulder, hip, knee, and angle joints this push action at the joints o our body causes our muscles on the same side to pull/ contract; so that on the other side of our body, our muscles and joints are are relaxed to turn our body. So on the back swing as our lead side muscles are pulling/ contracting; our trail side muscles are relaxing and turning and the on our down swing as our trail side muscles are pulling/ contracting our lead side muscles are relaxing and turning to the completion of pushing the kid on the swing ) As a side note believe it or not all the muscles in our body are built to only pull/contract or relax; but never push. When we push with our hands the muscles in our body pulls and and when we pull something with our hands our muscles are relaxed. So pulling the handle of our club in either direction we are actually putting no pulling muscles/ contracting muscles to work effectively into our swing whatsoever; and, we are actually relaxing most of them especially the ones of our upper torso. So as you stay within your golf posture until the end of your swing; and not even thinking about what various parts of your body are doing; all I want you to do is push the kid ( grip) back with your lead hands for the backswing and then on your downswing. with your trail hand, push and keep pushing the kid all the way to the end of your forward swing. With the rotation move of your body as your hands are continually pushing the kid back and then forth with alternates hands, his swing ( the club head) will go down leveling to the ground and then up and around your body to the full completion of your pushing the kid on his swing. All the hinges in our body must be passive and unlocked for our body to work in sequence; especially when we are pushing the kid on the swing both our wrists must be unlocked and passive throughout the process as well As far as the ball go it just gets in the way of pushing the kid on the swing. Hope you try it for your self and let me know what you think. It’s my new analogy of the golf swing that I will keep the rest of my life. It is my personal take on Ed Merrins “ Swing thé Handle” Cheers

ALL u need to do is keep ur hands LOW at setup .... lag has always been natural in my swing .... was teased about this back in the days .... but now is all guys talk about... trust me Clay... LOW hands at setup does this without all this crazy moves to think about. BEST is to for those who don't do it usually to do it a little "extreme" in their view = get about 25-30° angle between arms straight down and shaft leaning away from u.... there is no need for all these complications... really. Take care bud... folks... lag is NOT something u create from million moves.... u set it up before u start swinging!

I kind of was the opposite... I started to have to use lag cause I was snap hooking everything or pulling it, now I use it and I'm hitting my distances more consistently, like I can actually hit my 5 iron about 225

In contrast to the explanation, the real swing still have a supination of left arm before pass the inner side of the left leg. No one could break natural rule, including DJ, Bryson Dechamber, Justin Thomas, Cameron Champ. If someone could do it, please do let me know.

I noticed you bring your hands down from the top of the swing instead of bringing the hands across. That is one of the things I've just learned.

When they measured the average pro, his hand speed was 25 mph, and the first to move after the weight shift to recentering, I know this is a drill, but slow hand motion is contradictory?

You can throw your hands as fast as you want from the top if you start the downswing with the lower body and clear the hips properly. Your example of so called releasing too quickly your lower body stayed perfectly still and your hips didn't move, of course it looked bad. If you did the same lower body movement with your good lag swing it would produce the same ugly result. If you move your lower body correctly you can't release the club too early no matter how fast you try to release the hands, you'll be flat out getting to release the club at impact even if you feel like you're releasing too early. I agree with everything else you said about casting etc as that's one of the biggest myths in the golf swing that casting is bad as you have to cast to get the club to release in such a short space of time from the top of the swing to impact (if you try to hold lag you're dead), but you exaggerated your example of releasing the hands early by not doing your normal swing with the lower body. It does depend somewhat on the speed of the hips; golfers who don't move their hips fast would do better with slower hands, but for guys with super fast hips they almost have to start releasing their hands from the top or they'll get to impact with the club face way open and hands leaning too far forward.

Lag and shallowing in DS , happens by physics IF we slide during the BS and let wrists be free swinging hinges, not power hinges. What does this mean? It means in BS, the goal(intention) is to point the right palm facing the sky, to keep it facing the sky through impact. During the BS, Ben Hogan said he pushed off with his right foot as one pushes off the end of a swimming pool. Watch Hogans videos. During the BS he pushes off the right foot in order to slide his hips toward the target. At top of BS, his right hip is now lined up with the back of the ball, in position to be axis of rotation for the right elbow. It is the slide toward the target during the BS, that shallows the arms and the club...and the kinematic sequence increases lag, during the DS(as long as wrists are allowed to be free swinging hinges) Check where Ben Hogans right hip is at top of BS, how much closer to the target it has slid, before DS begins. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h33CZ4CVrb-pp5I Read all about it: The Hogan Manual of Human Performance: GOLF, Gerry Hogan, 1991.

Not so sure about shallowing the club out on the way down. Could lead to a hand flip and lots of shots going left. Most top players try and do the opposite
