Character actors were a big staple in movies before TV. When TV became popular and the movie studios started downsizing, many veteran character actors found steady work and recognition/fame appearing on TV shows. So many of us can recognize and identify character actors, AND we can name the characters they played. Example: Elvia Allman. Charles Lane. Louis Nye - it's your old pal, Zombo!!!! And Louis was also Sonny Drysdale.
