I just love this kind of black metal, especially Burzum. It's so raw and beautiful.

Yeah, the 432Hz tuning was something some Extreme Metal musicians were using up there to get a slightly distinct sound, especially back in those days. Ditto for the radical use of the HM-2, for its time, with the Death Metal crowd pursuing the chainsaw sound while some of the Black Metal crowd were using it as a kind of brutal tinged fuzz. But hey, 440 or 432 -- those are killer riffs!

A lot of bands had weird tunings back in the 80s and 90s especially bands who were recording with a low budget some would do it intentionally some wouldn't
@andtuningforall49574 ай бұрын
Probably just the tapes that were either sharpening or flattening the pitch by a few cents, because even slayer and every debut album had slightly sharper tuning
@erymanthonseth9295 Жыл бұрын
Interesting video. I get asked about those tunings often on my channel too when I do covers and stuff so I discussed the topic too in the past. My take on the subject is that the tape machine they had in the studio had some playback speed defect, and that's why the pitch is altered. Mayhem used to tune to E flat when playing live around that time, it can be heard on the Live in Leipzig recording for instance. Varg probably tuned to E standard, but the playback glitch made all those recordings sound a tad sharper than the original tuning at which they were recorded (especially since the synth too is in tune with the guitars, and I doubt they messed with the synth's frequency). I can't say for sure, but that's my guess. Good playing by the way!

Interesting. To play De Mysteriis, I always tuned perfectly halfway between E and E-flat, and that sounded just right to me. I guess it could just be that that were using the old 432Hz standard too, but I’m not sure what tuners they would have been using to do that
@DevGohil2 жыл бұрын
not sure either, 432hz is kinda close the mid of E and Eb

I think Teloch said in one of his play-through videos that they really didn't use tuners back then. :)

Vargs tuning went outta wack because ( from what I have heard and can guess) his guitar had a floating trem and it just settled high. I had that happen on my somber collection part 2 release and man it sounds cold. Thank you for sharing with everyone. Just goes to show that just by changing tuning just a little your options are infinite.

i thought you are gonna talk about the greater magic to tune it as open Dm (DADFAD) or alternatively open Em (means to just tune up A and D strings to B and E). Its the best for any blackmetal (or maybe metal?) riff. Creating new song or playing others

Thank you for the information. At 0:51, the second part of the riff, the first low note, is not an E but an F. I've tried it myself, and I think it's an F. Simon Smith also demonstrates this with a low F. I strongly believe that the bass also plays F.
@DevGohil16 күн бұрын
The bass plays an F Guitars on record are playing an E, I even play it wrong here, the notes are right but it has a weird spidery chord shape. i learned it from Blackthorn 2:03 kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGTKlXepnMeaotk
@kingpriapatius583216 күн бұрын
@@DevGohil Hello. Yes, Blackthorn says for the riff, "I've seen played in different ways", and (I assume) he speaks about the band. Probably, he demonstrates the original composition. In this live video, the guitar player 99.9% plays an F kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3-ze6qvrbWUf8U. 0:36, then again at 5:04. So the original was with an E, but then the second part changed one semitone.

So what I’ve gathered from the whole Filosofem recording is that every track other than Dunkelheit were recorded around the same time being that Dunkelheit was the original “Burzum Track”, thus giving it a different tuning and even a slightly different tone if you can notice it.
@spritefroggy Жыл бұрын
No. All of the Filosofem songs were recorded at the same time - however, Varg tried recording Dunkleheit on Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and didn't like the recording, so he attempted it again on Filosofem.
@cheekibreeki9216 ай бұрын
The Burzum tuning for Filosofem sounds like the tuning Impaled Nazarene used for the entire Ugra-Karma album but I'm not sure. I'm also almost certain this was the same for what Dissection used for The Somberlain and sorta what Tsjuder used for majority of the songs for Desert Northern Hell.

Hey man, good video, I already smelled what the tuning of "de mysteriis dom sathanas" was, but I didn't expect that the tuning of "filosofem" was a 450 hz tuning, very rare in metal. One question, do you know the tunings of "deathcrush" by mayhem, "the somberlain" by dissection and "enter the moonlight gate" by lord belial? I have heard that these tunings also have a particularity in the hz as well, it would be great if you made a video of those tunings, greetings!! 🤘👍

How many months of rehabilitation does not help, it's the end of a guitar career. that was the biggest dream. which has almost come true.
